SCHLAU: JOWO accidentally discovered a cheat sheet earlier. Apparently someone wants to cheat! PROFESSOR EINSTEIN: Really? MS. SCHLAU: JOWO, show us an example. The triangle ruler was prepared with a piece of white paper. On the back are vocabulary words, but when you put the triangle ruler on a sheet of white paper, you can’t tell that it was modified. PROFESSOR EINSTEIN: That is… That’s brilliant. I think whoever makes such a great cheat sheet should receive the best grade on the exam. MS. SCHLAU: What? No! Retallick, Assistant Professor Greg Miller, Professor Iowa State University Abstract The purpose of this study was to describe the nature of early field experience (EFE) in agricultural teacher education programs nationally. A descriptive census survey of all active agricultural teacher education programs in the country was used for this study. The fact that nearly all agricultural teacher education programs require EFE indicates that EFE is valued as an important component of teacher education programs. It was discovered that multiple early field experiences are required at multiple classification levels. The primary responsibility for EFE and the associated administrative tasks are placed on faculty within the agricultural teacher education program. Similarities regarding EFE requirements seem to end at broad, categorical levels. Most programs report having requirements; however, the means by which each program fulfills the requirements are considerably different. Teacher licensure, as well as state and national teacher education accreditation, influences procedural and minimum EFE requirements. This study provides the foundation for further research. Additional research is needed to identify the purposes and outcomes of EFE and determine the extent to which student learning occurs. Greg Garrard) The contrast between the largely enthusiastic response to ecocriticism in the Anglophone academy and its relative invisibility in the German-speaking world is a puzzle. Why has it yet to gain wider recognition as a field of literary study in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, countries in whose philosophy and cultural tradition nature features so prominently, whose people are shown by international surveys of public opinion to show a high degree of environmental concern, and where environmental issues rank consistently high on the political agenda? One reason may be that German scientists, political thinkers and philosophers have been pioneers in ecology since Humboldt and Haeckel, and non-fiction books have served as the primary medium of public debate on environmental issues in Germany. -

INTRODUCTION The Surreal without Surrealism The time will come, if it is not already come, when the surrealist enterprise:': will be studied and evaluated, in the history of literature, as an adventure of hope. —Wallace Fowlie, Age of Surrealism Indubitably, Surrealism and the GDR are closely connected, and are more closely related to each other than one might think. When, for example, one listens to the recollections and reads the memoirs of those who lived in this country, apparently no other conclusion can be drawn. Life in the East German Communist state had a surrealistic disposition, was associated with the grotesque, absurd and irrational. Admittedly, Surrealism did not exist in the GDR. Not only are the insights of Hans Magnus Enzensberger and Peter Bürger on the death of the historical avant-garde convincing and applicable to the GDR;1 it is also significant that no German artist or writer who considered him- or herself a Surrealist prior to 1945 returned from exile to settle in the SBZ or the GDR. Most of the celebrities of German Surrealism during the Weimar Republic were forced to go into exile or did not return to Germany at all. Max Ernst, for example, remained living in the USA, and then in 1953 moved to his wife’s old quarters in Paris; Hans Arp decided to live in Switzerland, and in 1949 chose the USA as his home country. Others who had lived through and survived Hitler’s Germany had to face the harsh demands of National Socialist cultural politics that downgraded the avant-garde to the status of Entartete Kunst, or degenerate art, and sidelined and even terrorized its representatives. -

Anlässlich dieses Ereignisses wurde das Leitmotiv „Krieg und Frieden“ ausgewählt. Seitdem es die Menschheit gibt, werden Kriege geführt. Ursachen mögen verschieden sein, Auswirkungen sind ähnlich. Ein Krieg zerstört und vernichtet Städte, Landstriche, Menschenleben, und hat auch enorme Auswirkungen auf gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Traditionen. Der Erste Weltkrieg gilt als „Urkatastrophe des 20. Jahrhunderts“. Auch das Schicksal der modernen Kunst ist eng damit verbunden. Die prägenden Jahre von 1914 bis 1918 waren Endpunkt und Neubeginn zugleich. -
