New Mexico Study Abroad Program Instituto Cervantes of Albuquerque Spanish Linguistic and Cultural Immersion Tourism for junior high and high school students Come visit the only State in America where Spanish is an official language! Instituto Cervantes is a non-profit organization created by the Spanish government in 1991. Its mission is to promote the Spanish language and to contribute to the advancement of the cultures of all Spanish speaking countries and communities. With over 200,000 students per year, Instituto Cervantes is the largest institution in the world dedicated to teaching Spanish. The Instituto Cervantes of Albuquerque offers a variety of Spanish courses for individuals and groups and organizes many exciting cultural events throughout the year. Instituto Cervantes Albuquerque has designed a very unique immersion program that includes historical, cultural and linguistic aspects that not only challenge the student but create skills for personal growth in a real Spanish social context. Instituto Cervantes in Albuquerque, NM, is the only Cervantes center in the world that is located in an area where Spanish is an official language - along with English. Your students will have the unique opportunity to experience New Mexican and Spanish culture, within the US, in an intensive and rich Spanish immersion program. Program details: Academic and Cultural Activities: Weekdays Mornings (9.00 am – 12.00 pm) - Option 1: Spanish Language & Culture immersion classes (from A1 to C2 levels) designed according to the needs, linguistic competence and curriculum of each group. Instituto Cervantes Educational Facilities - Option 2: Spanish Language Arts Modules (Literature, History, Culture, Social Studies, Arts, Linguistics, Native-American Studies) designed according to the needs, linguistic competence and curriculum of each group. Instituto Cervantes Educational Facilities All the classes will be planned and delivered by the Instituto Cervantes teaching staff. We have a team of 12 experienced Spanish instructors from different Spanish speaking Countries, trained and committed to academic excellence. Weekdays Afternoons (1.00 pm – 5.00 pm) - Option 1: New Mexican Interactive Cultural Workshops in Spanish: different topics on New Mexican and Hispanic Culture: Dance, Music, History and Traditions, Food, Arts & Crafts, Nature, Legends, Cinema, etc. Different venues according to the workshop topic: National Hispanic Cultural Center, The Albuquerque Museum, New Mexico Museum of Arts, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, New Mexico National Parks, Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, etc. - Option 2: Cultural guided visits in Spanish, in collaboration with New Mexico Tourism Department: Albuquerque’s Old Town, Santa Fe’s Old Town, Palace of the Governors, Indian Pueblos, Colonial Architecture and Urbanism, Rio Grande, Sandia Peak etc. All the workshops and guided visits will be designed and delivered by local specialists in different topics who collaborate with Instituto Cervantes for this special program. Fridays and weekend’s fieldtrips from Albuquerque (Full Day): In collaboration with New Mexico Tourism Department. Different options to choose from: - Santa Fe, The Camino Real & El Rancho de Las Golondrinas - Taos and the Enchanted Circle Tour - Northern New Mexico Pueblos Tour - White Sands Desert National Park, Las Cruces & Mesilla - Ancestral Pueblo Cliff dwellings at Bandelier National Monument - Carlsbad Caverns National Park Meals: Breakfast is always served at the hotel. It is included in the room price. Lunch is always served at “La Fonda del Bosque”, the restaurant of the National Hispanic Cultural Center (2 minutes walking distance from the Cervantes Institute Facilities). This restaurant is been ranked as "One of the 50 best Hispanic restaurants in the USA" – Hispanic Magazine. The acclaimed and varied home cooking from New Mexico is sure to please everyone at the table. There are always possibilities of different types of menus and/or buffet. Diners are more special and include a variety of restaurants housed in heritage buildings in Albuquerque and selected by their quality of food, Southwest cuisine and menus. Located in the heart of Old Town, our Albuquerque, New Mexico hotel offers luxurious accommodations and amenities, including two on-site restaurants, an Olympic-size outdoor swimming pool, romantic gardens and more than 62,000 sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor events space. Rooms are normally shared by two students and have to queen beds. Average price per night per room: $80. Transportation: Each group will have a bus for the entire trip including: service from and to the airport, daily transportation from the hotel to the Instituto Cervantes and the other activities planned for the day, evening and dinner rides, weekend field trips around New Mexico, etc. Students’ supervision: The Instituto Cervantes will provide a full-time local instructor to supervise and accompany the group at all times. However we suggest every school to send one teacher or supervisor for every 15 students traveling. The Instituto Cervantes will take care of the accommodation and meals of the teachers and/or supervisors traveling with students.
