Nature’s Notebook Mobile Application Reporting observations on mobile devices Install and Login: Download the Nature’s Notebook (NN) app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store1. Install and open the app, log in using your account credentials2, agree to the perms- 1 2 sions to grant the app access to your online account3. If you are a new observer to Nature’s Notebook, follow the prompts to make a 3 new account4. Exisiting NN users will have their accounts synced on login. Depending on the size of your account, the app may take a few moments to sync. Progress can be seen by following along with the blue bar5. Navigation: The NN app is organized into catergory menus appearing at the top of each screen. You can toggle between the catergories at any time. 6 7 Select Your Observation Site: When loaded, the main screen will appear. From the list, select either your personal sites(s) or your LPP to begin observing7. Personal sites will be revealed when you select My Sites from the pick list. All of your personal sites will be displayed on screen8. If you are observing with an LPP, select the 8 9 program from the list of groups. Or, click Join a Group at the bottom of the screen9. Entering Observations: Review the Plants & Animals catergory for the selected site’s species list. If you’d like to add new plants and animals to observe, click the button at the bottom. Clicking the Observe button will bring you to the phenophase data entry screen for the species at your site11. 10 11 The date and time will be automatically populated. You can also manually select and change the date if needed, by clicking on the dropdown for the date field and editing it in the pop-up that appears12. 12 Phenophase defintions can be viewed by clicking on the (i) next to the phenophase13. 13 Enter a Y N or ? response for the corre- sponding phenophase14. When answering Y, a window will pop up with an intensity question. If the pheno- phase is not occuring, select N15. You have the option for Mark All Phenophases As No if they were not present. Entering a Y, N or ? for each species ensures your observations are complete. Click the Save Data at the bottom of the screen 15 16 and when you are ready to move on, click Next Plant16. If you are observing animals, click the but- ton labeled Animals. to reveal your ani- mal list17. Click Observed if you saw the animal, or Not Present if you did not. Clicking the Observed button will reveal the animal species phenophase questions. 17 18 Again, click the Y N or ? for the corre- sponding phase18. As with plants, when you click a Y, the option to answer a numeric intensity ques- tion will be reveled. After completeing animal observations click the Save Data button at the bottom of the screen. Click the button for Site-visit Details to enter informaton regarding the status of your site at the time of your observation19. 19 20 Reviewing Data: Data can be reviewed by selecting the Review button on the naviga- tion menu. If you’ve entered an observa- tion for each phenophase in the definition (Y, N, ?) you will see a √ complete data on the calendar20. Skipped phenophases, with no Y, N, ? entry will be logged as incomplete data. Again, if you are unsure of what you observe, use 21 the ? so your data entry will be complete. You may wish to sync your data when you are done by clicking the Sync button at the bottom21. By clicking Manage Accounts you can add multiple observer’s accounts to a sin- gle device. Click Add Existing Account to add a current NN user, or can click Create New Account to create a new observer profile. 22 23 When adding an exisitng user, your will need to repeat the logn, OAuth permission agreement, and intial loading. When switching users, return to the Settings tab, click Manage Accounts, and choose the proper NN observer account from the toggle list23.
