The Tree of Life / ﬠֵץ הַחַיִּים
Jill Rubin – Shabbat “Bereshit” October 25, 2019 ֵﬠץ ַה ַח ִיּים / The Tree of Life The tree of life sits at the center of the Garden of Eden. Next to it, the tree of knowledge of good and evil. They are both pleasing to the eyes and good for food, perfectly suited to the first human beings, Adam and Eve. We know a great deal about the tree of knowledge of good and evil from this week’s Torah portion, Bereishit. We know that God says to Adam: You can eat from every tree, except for this one. If you eat from it, you will surely die. We know that Eve takes fruit from the tree, after the serpent cunningly tricks her. We know that God, in an angry wrath, condemns both Adam and Eve to a life outside of paradise. But what do we know about the tree of life, ? ֵﬠץ ַה ַח ִיּים Why does it sit at the center of the Garden of Eden? Our parsha suggests that the tree of life has the power to immortalize man. For when God discovers 1 Jill Rubin – Shabbat “Bereshit” October 25, 2019 what the humans have done, God speaks to the angels and the animals: Now that man has become like one of us, knowing good and bad, what if he should stretch out his hand and also take from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever! God not only banishes Adam and Eve from the garden, but places angelic beings and a fiery sword to guard the path to the tree of life.1 The etz chaim has magical powers. -

Yet these hotels were unlike most in America, for they not only represented an escape from the confines of the ghetto of the Lower East Side, but they also retained a distinct religious nature. Rabbi Shimon Bar Yohai, the author of the "Zohar" lived, studied and worked in the the 2nd Century, C.E., studying the deepest Kabbalistic secrets with his disciples in a cave near Tzfat called "Me'arat Ha'idra". It was there that they experienced the lofty spiritual and Heavenly revelations described in the Zohar. The entire Tzfat area is dotted with many graves of ancient Jewish sages and mystics, dating from the First Temple Era through the Middle Ages. These holy sites bear witness to the work and activities of Prophets and early Talmudic sages, who were also well-known mystics in their own right. They were attracted by the region's special energy and atmosphere, and saw it as the ideal location for connecting with the inspiration and insights of Kabbalah. -

Charlotte, North Carolina 2014 Proceedings Chai Life Sara Jablon, Iowa State University, USA Key words: digital, knitting, Judaism, symbology This ensemble was inspired by two images common in Judaica, the tree of life, also important to many other religions and myths, and chai, which is not only the Hebrew word for life, but a symbol in and of itself. The tree of life, called Etz Chaim in Hebrew, is distinct from the Garden of Eden’s tree of knowledge. It is found in Proverbs 3:17-18: “It is a tree of life to all who grasp it, and whoever holds on to it is happy; its ways are ways of pleasantness, and all its paths are peace.” In addition to peace and happiness, tree of life signifies growth and longevity. Representations of the tree of life are featured frequently in Jewish art and architecture. -

HISTORICAL SKETCH Etz Chaim is an Orthodox Sephardic Jewish Congregation in Indianapolis , Indiana. The first Sephardic (of Spanish origin) Jews settled in Indianapolis in 1906. By 1916 there was a community and a congregation, and so a rabbi was hired in 1916. In 1919 the new congregation purchased a building for a Kahal (synagogue), and named the congregation Etz Chaim (tree of life). As the Jewish community in Indianapolis moved to the north side of town, the congregation purchased a church at the corner of 64th Street and Hoover Road in 1963, and moved the synagogue there. The congregation dedicated its new building, at 6939 Hoover Road, on 25 September 2005.
