Now, this historical fact is eminently paradoxical. And this is so because writing, as many authors have esta- blished—from Hegel3 to Vernant4, and passing through Husserl and Derrida5—is also the condition of possibility of the forms of knowledge that we call rational. This is so for the original model of rational knowledge, geo- metry, but also for all the extensions into fields such as history, geography and, certainly, philosophy itself. And it was doubtless the writing of Plato’s Dialogues6 that made possible the rational and cumulative process that began with philosophy, and through which Plato “immortalized” the figure of his master, Socrates.
