They were emerging as title rivals to Ferguson’s Manchester United and he was keen for Morgan to move to Old Trafford. Morgan chose Blackburn, signing for the Ewood Park side in 1994. A year later, Blackburn won their one and only Premier League title. But despite training with the league-winning squad, and making the bench for league and European matches, Morgan found himself released – and without a club – almost three years later. It was only weeks before captaining the Ireland Under-20s to a third-place finish in the 1997 World Championships in Malaysia. Put simply, Morgan fell by the wayside as Blackburn – and their Premier League rivals – regularly shunned the promotion of youth in favour of big-money signings. Next it will be the turn of the youth players in both the men’s (Under-17 and Under-19) and women’s categories (Under-19) to compete for European honours from May to July, when the final rounds of their European champion- ships will be taking place. At senior level, however, the players only have European club competition medals to contend for this year. The national teams are not dormant though. At the end of March, the UEFA EURO 2004 qualifiers move into their criti- cal phase and, come autumn, the 15 teams who will join hosts Portugal in the final round next year will be known. There could be a lot of drama to come. I am happy to report that with UEFA EURO 2004 only 15 months away, preparations are well advanced, and EURO 2004, SA, the joint operation set up by UEFA and the Portuguese Football Federation, is running at full speed.

Promoted to the top flight in 1967, Tthey were managed by Jimmy Hill who led the ‘sky blue revolution’ and took the club from Division Three to Division One upon his arrival in 1961 . Hill’s sudden departure to London Weekend Television prior to the opening game at Burnley saw the appointment of Noel Cantwell as manager . The Sky Blues finished one place above the relegation zone in 1967/68 and 1968/69 before an unbelievable sixth place in 1969/70 ensured qualification for the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup . Tenth place in 1970/71 continued the progress until March 1972 when, with the side 18th in the division, Cantwell was sacked and chief scout Bob Dennison took over as caretaker until the season’s end . Jimmy Hill would return as managing director in 1975 and combined the role with presenting Match of the Day on BBC1 before, as a major shareholder, taking on the chairman’s role in the summer of 1980 .
