The UCLA track & field program will be back in action on Feb. 1-2 at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic at the 22-23 MPSF Indoor Championships Albuquerque Convention Center. A total five student-athletes will make the trip for the Bruins - freshman Sondre (Seattle, Wash.) Guttormsen (pole vault), sophomore Tate Curran (pole vault), redshirt sophomore Nate Esparza (shot put), senior March Melissa Maneatis (pole vault) and redshirt senior Elleyse Garrett (pole vault). 8-9 NCAA Indoor Championships FRESHMAN PHENOM MAKES HISTORY (Birmingham, Ala.) At the Columbia Challenge on Jan. 26, freshman Sondre Guttormsen made history when he cleared 5.71m (18-8.75) 15-16 Willie Williams Classic on his third attempt, which broke a 41-year-old UCLA indoor record. His mark trumped Mike Tulley’s indoor effort of (Tucson, Ariz.) 5.62m (18-5.25) set for the Bruins in 1978. Guttormsen, the second athlete ever to clear 18 feet at the National Pole 22 at Aztec Invitational Vault Summit, also tied Tulley’s outdoor mark of 5.71m and set a meet record for the Columbia Challenge. (San Diego, Calif.) 29 Bob Larsen Distance Carnival WILSON STAYS UNBEATEN IN SHOT PUT (Drake Stadium) Sophomore Alyssa Wilson remained perfect in the shot put, improving to 3-0 with a first-place finish at the Columbia 30 Jim Bush Legends Invitational Challenge. She posted a mark of 17.24m (56-6.75). In the season opener at the Northern Arizona Friday Night Duals, (Drake Stadium) she threw 17.73m (58-2), a lifetime best and the second-best mark in UCLA’s indoor history. LAST MEET April In addition to Guttormsen’s record-breaking performance in the pole vault, UCLA won three other events at the 13 Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational Columbia Challenge. The Bruin men earned an impressive third-place finish with 79 points, just two points short of (Drake Stadium) Ohio State. On the women’s side, UCLA finished eighth with 46 points. Junior Robert Brandt clocked a career-best 18-20 at Mt. Sac Relays time of 7:59.11 to win the 3000m, marking the fourth-fastest time in program history. Sophomore Alyssa Wilson (Torrance, Calif.) continued her dominance in the shot put, moving to 3-0 on the season when she tossed 17.24m (56-6.75) to win 28 USC the event, followed by senior Ashlie Blake at 16.89m (55-5). On the men’s side, senior Justin Stafford took home (Los Angeles - Cromwell Field & Lower Track Stadium) first place in the weight throw, heaving 20.55m (67-5.25). Another senior thrower in Dotun Ogundeji qualified for May the men’s shot put invitational, where he earned third place at 19.52m (64-0.5) on his last attempt. In the women’s 4-5 at Pac-12 Multi-Events Championships pole vault, senior Elleyse Garrett cleared 4.20m (13-9.25) on her last attempt, sealing a second-place finish for the (Tucson, Ariz.) Murrieta, Calif., native. Senior Michael Burke mustered eight more points for the men in the high jump, clearing 11-12 at Pac-12 Championships 2.14m (7-0.25) to earn second place, while junior Meleni Rodney earned eight points for the women in the 200m (Tucson, Ariz.) dash when she registered a time of 24.05 to take second. In total, the Bruins boasted 17 top-five finishes. 23-25 at NCAA West Regionals MEN MAKE FOURTH-LARGEST LEAP IN USTFCCCA POLL (Sacramento, Calif.) The UCLA men jumped 24 spots in the latest NCAA Division I National Rating Index, from 55 to 31. This was the fourth-largest jump in the poll for week two. Overall, the Bruins have 28.83 points and are now the fourth-ranked June team in the West region. On the women’s side, the Bruins remained idle at No. 28 with 31.69 points, good for 10th 6-8 at NCAA Championships in the West. (Austin, Texas) ANDERSON BEGINS SECOND SEASON UCLA graduate and track and field/football alumnus Avery Anderson is in his second year as the Director of Track UCLA ON SOCIAL MEDIA & Field and Cross Country, having assumed the position on July 6, 2017. In his first year at the helm, Anderson Track & Field Twitter: @UCLATrack_Field helped UCLA muster USTFCCCA All-America performances in several events during the outdoor season, including Track & Field Instagram: @uclatrackandfield first team selections in Robert Brandt (10,000m), Kendall Gustafson (heptathlon), Jessie Maduka (triple jump) and Track & Field Facebook: /UCLATrackAndField Alyssa Wilson (shot put, hammer). The UCLA track & field program also saw two student-athletes (Simon Litzell, UCLA Athletics Twitter: @UCLAAthletics javelin; Marian Spannowsky, javelin) earn second team honors, while Justin Stafford (hammer) and Alyssa Wilson UCLA Athletics Instagram: @UCLAAthletics (discus) took home honorable mention plaudits in their respective events. Anderson’s indoor All-Americans included: UCLA Athletics Facebook: /UCLAAthletics Ashlie Blake (first team, shot put), Jessie Maduka (first team, triple jump), Nate Esparza (second team, shot put), Dotun Ogundeji (second team, shot put) and Alyssa Wilson (second team, shot put). During the 2018 track & field #GoBruins season, UCLA notched 26 Pac-12 All-Academic honorees, and the Bruins saw 24 student-athletes qualify for the NCAA West Regional Championships. At the 2018 Pac-12 Championships, the Bruins collected two individual titles. In the women’s triple jump, Jessie Maduka’s mark of 13.59m (44-7) gave the Bruins their first victory in the event since 2004. On the men’s side, Simon Litzell threw a collegiate-best 74.46m (244-3) in the javelin to take first place.
