1 Team USA Named for World Championships in Moscow

INDIANAPOLIS - Nine reigning World champions and 20 individual Olympic medalists from will lead Team USA at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia from August 10-18.

This year’s roster features a mix of veteran athletes with a large class of newcomers to the senior world stage. Three athletes on the Team USA roster have yet to celebrate their 20th birthdays: 17-year-old (1500m), 19-year-old (400m), 19-year-old (800m).

Athletes seeking to defend their 2011 World titles include: Jason Richardson (110m hurdles), Chris- tian Taylor (), Jesse Williams (), (), (de- cathlon), (100m), (1500m), (400m hurdles) and (long jump).

Along with the reigning World champions, four athletes enjoyed automatic bids to this year’s roster after winning their respective event in the 2012 . These athletes include: (200m), Dawn Harper (100m hurdles), Chaunte Lowe (high jump/withdrew), ().

While more than 20 athletes own American records indoors or outdoors, the team also boasts five athletes with world records to their names: ( and ), (110m hurdles), (indoor ), and Carmelita Jeter (4x100m relay) STAT NOTES

• If Mary Cain wins a , she will be the youngest ever gold medalist in any event at the World Championships. If she wins a medal of any kind, she will be the youngest woman ever to medal in the 1500.

• If Brianna Rollins wins the 100mH, she will be the youngest ever gold medalist in that event.

• Dwight Phillips is making his 7th WC appearance, tying him with for the most ever by a U.S. man.

• If Allyson Felix wins the 200m and is on the winning 4x100m and 4x400m, she will tie Merlene Ot- tey as the highest-scoring athlete in WC history with 101 points (scoring is 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1).

• If LaShawn Merritt wins gold on the 4x400m, he will be the first man to have four golds in elaysr at the WC. Also, a 400m medal for Merritt would tie him with Michael Johnson for the most medals in that event at four.

• If medals in the 200m, he will tie with for the most medals in that event at four.

Named as assistant coaches for the women’s staff for Team USA were:Latanya Sheffield (sprints/ hurdles); Delethea Quarles (jumps/combined events); Sandy Fowler (throws) and Carol McLatchie (distance). Amy Deem will coach the women’s relays.

Alford-Sullivan to lead Team USA’s women As the director and head coach of track & field and cross country at Penn State, Alford-Sullivan has coached 138 NCAA All-Americans and led her athletes to 78 Big Ten individual champions and four NCAA championships. During the 2011-2012 season, she led the Nittany Lions to eight individual Big Ten Cham- pionship titles, two conference relay titles and the women’s team to a 13th place finish in the team standings at the NCAA Cross Country Championships - the best finish from the PSU program in nearly two decades.

No less than 14 conference and regional coach of the year honors have been awarded to Alford- Sullivan in her 14 years of coaching the Nittany Lions. Prior to Penn State, Alford-Sullivan served on the staffs at Stanford, Mankato State University, Southeast Missouri State University and Southern University at Carbondale.

Alford-Sullivan has served on the Team USA coaching staffs numerous times including the 2004 , 2001 and 2003 World Championships, 2011 Junior Pan American Championships and 2008 NACAC U-23 Championships.

16 Holloway to lead Team USA’s men As the head men’s and women’s track & field and cross country coach at Florida, Holloway has coached nearly 500 All-America honors athletes and more than 30 individual NCAA champions. Hol- loway’s athletes have also found success on the world stage, as he has coached five athletes to a total of 11 Olympic or World Champion- ships medals, seven of which were gold.

The Gator men swept the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Champion- ship titles in 2012, defended their NCAA Oudoor title in 2013 and picked up their third-consecutive Kirby Lee/Image of Sport NCAA Indoor title. On the women’s side, Holloway led the Gators to their second SEC team title in three years and seventh title in program history.

Some of the top athletes coached by Holloway include: , John Capel, Kerron Clement, Jeff Demps, Tony McQuay, Christian Taylor and Will Claye.

Holloway is a four-time recipient of the USTFCCCA’s Men’s Coach of the Year award, having re- ceived the honor three times for the indoor season and once for the outdoor season.

No stranger to Team USA staffs, Holloway most recently served as the men’s sprints and hurdles coach at the 2012 Olympic Games. Holloway has also served on the 2007 World Outdoor Champi- onships staff as an assistant coach.
