    THE UNITED STATES OLYMPIC COMMITTEE ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT. MADISON HUGHES - MEN’S RUGBY The U.S. Rugby Sevens Men’s National Team had success during February as did Team Captain Madison Hughes. The Eagles traveled to the Wellington Sevens the first weekend in February and then went directly to the USA Sevens tournament as part of the HSBC Sevens World Series. Hughes scored a total of two tries and 11 conversions at the Wellington tournament. During the USA Sevens tournament, he scored three tries and six conversions and was named to the tournament’s Dream Team. This was Hughes first time being selected to a Dream Team. Hughes’ performance throughout the season has him leading the U.S team in tackles and points scored and he also is in the top ten worldwide for both categories at the halfway point of the 2014-2015 season. A native of London, England, Hughes was introduced to rugby at the age of seven. He excelled in the sport and eventually began playing for the Dartmouth rugby team upon starting college there. Hughes Madison Hughes runs through the South African was a member of both the Dartmouth 15s and 7s rugby teams.     FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tennis stars honoured with OLY Olympians receive OLY honorary title on day two of the 2019 Brisbane International Tennis Tournament in Australia Brisbane, Australia: 1 January 2019 A star-studded line up of Australian Olympians has been honoured with OLY post-nominal titles at a special ceremony held at this year’s Brisbane International Tournament. Local legends of the game included Wayne Arthurs (Athens 2004), Sam Groth (Rio 2016), Renee Stubbs (Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008) and rising star John Millman (Rio 2016). Due to match schedules Daria Gavrilova (Rio 2016) and John Peers (Rio 2016) were unable to attend the presentation but will receive their award at a later date. The Olympians were presented with their OLY certificate and exclusive OLY pin by Olympian Paul Gonzalez OLY, Acting President of the Queensland Olympic Council, which organised the presentation, and 5-time Olympic Medallist Cate Campbell OLY (Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016). The ceremony took place ahead of the start of play on day two of the tournament, which acts as a precursor to the prestigious Australian Open Grand Slam. The tennis stars can now use OLY after their name on official documentation, in much the same way as a PhD, other post-nominal designations and honorary titles. World Olympians Association launched the OLY post-nominal letters initiative in November 2017. Since that time more than 10,000 Olympians worldwide have been granted the honour, which serves as a constant public reminder and recognition of an Olympian’s achievements in the field of sport, as well as a symbolic recognition of their status in society and their commitment to furthering the Olympic ideals.

In The News Healthy after kidney transplant, Aries Merritt returns to world championships and finishes second behind Aleec Harris in the 110-meter hurdles. SACRAMENTO, California. — Aries Merritt will be making a return to the world championships. This time, with a working kidney. The world-record holder Merritt finished second behind Aleec Harris in the 110-meter hurdles at the U.S. track and field championships Sunday. His place — as long as it was top three — didn’t really matter. He just wanted a spot. Harris proved uncatchable as he finished in 13.24 seconds. Merritt was 0.07 seconds behind. Merritt won bronze at the 2015 world championships in Beijing with his kidneys barely functioning because of a genetic disorder. He received the transplant from his sister less than a week later. Now healthy, he’s ready to see what he can do with worlds being held at the venue where he won an Olympic gold medal during the 2012 London Games. “I always felt once I was healthy, all it would take is for me to put in the work,” Merritt ex- plained. “That’s something I’ve been lacking. I haven’t been able to put in the work in two years.” Merritt, 31, said he knew he would make a strong return, although he encountered many scep- tics.

While there remain many challenges ahead if we are to make further advances and cement the IAAF Diamond League’s position as one of the world’s major sports series, we firmly believe that we have made an exceptionally good start in the first three years of the new competition structure.
