A talented coach with extensive NCAA Division I experience, LaMonte Vaughn begins his first season as the head coach for Cal State L.A.’s men’s and women’s track and field and women’s cross country teams.

Vaughn comes to Cal State L.A. from UCLA, where he was a men’s assistant coach for sprints, hurdles and relays for the past three seasons. UCLA’s sprinters enjoyed great success during his time with the Bruins and Vaughn guided Maxwell Dyce (20.72 200m) and the 4x100 relay team to the NCAA Outdoor Championships for a second straight season in 2012. The 4x100 relay team also beat rival USC for a third straight year.

In 2011, UCLA’s 4x100 relay team advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships and earned USTFCCCA All-America second-team honors after running a season-best time of 39.45.

In his first season with the Bruins in 2010, Vaughn led the 4x100 relay team to a Pacific-10 Conference championship with a time of 39.43 and recorded the program’s fastest time in that event since 1998. The 4x100 relay team advanced to the finals at the NCAA Outdoor meet and earned All-America honors. LaMonte Vaughn Before joining UCLA, Vaughn was an assistant coach for four years at the University of Washington. He had several All-American student-athletes at Washington, including Ashlee Lodree (8.01 60H, 12.95 100H) Head Coach and Jordan Boase (44.82 400m, 20.37 200m). Lodree was a six-time All-American focusing on the hurdle events, while Boase (3rd indoors and 4th outdoors in 2006) was a standout quarter-miler and a member of several All-American 4x400m relay teams.

Vaughn coached the men’s 4x100 relay team to its first-ever Pac-10 title in 2008 and helped guide the 4x400 relay team to a school record in 2005 (3:03.85 outdoors and 3:07.03 indoors). The 4x400 relay team was third at the 2006 NCAA Indoor meet and eighth at the outdoor meet.

Vaughn led another student-athlete at Washington, Shane Charles, to the 2006 Pac-10 400-meter hurdle crown and Charles also set a Grenadian national record (49.51). In all, Vaughn helped coach student-athletes to nine school records, had 19 NCAA Championship Meet participants, 25 West Region qualifiers, two USATF Senior national qualifiers and 65 performances on Washington’s all-time Top-10 list.

Vaughn was also a graduate assistant coach at Eastern Kentucky in 2004 and was an assistant coach at Marshall University from 1999-2003, where he coached student-athletes to 13 school records.

Vaughn graduated from the University of Kentucky, where he qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 800 (1:48.23) in 1994 and 1996 and set a school record in the 600 (1:18.20). He was ranked in the top-50 in the United States in the 800 in 1996.

After helping the Golden Eagles to a tremendous campaign in 2011-12, Steve Laguna returns for his third season an assistant coach with the Cal State L.A. cross country and track and field programs.

Laguna helped the Golden Eagles to a surprising third-place finish in the California Collegiate Athletic Association in cross country in 2011 and guided the middle and long distance runners to exceptional performances during the indoor and outdoor track seasons.

Cal State L.A. had three runners finish in the top-10 and earn All-CCAA honors in cross country and the Golden Eagles recorded their best team finish since 2007. Cal State L.A. then dominated the middle distances in the CCAA women’s outdoor track and field championships with Valerie Sanchez winning both the 800-meter and 1,500 championships and Lisa Ohberg earning All-CCAA honors in both events. Sanchez also earned an All- America award in the mile in indoor track, while Ohberg earned All-America honors in the 1,500 in outdoor track. Steve Laguna Assistant Coach In his first year with the program, Laguna helped the Golden Eagles to a fourth-place finish in the CCAA in cross country in 2010. The Golden Eagles also fared well in the middle and long-distance runners during the 2011 indoor and outdoor track seasons. Cal State L.A. had a conference champion in the women’s 10,000 meters (Maritza Hernandez) and earned four other All-CCAA awards in the women’s 800, 1,500 and 5,000.

Before coming to Cal State L.A., Laguna was an assistant coach at Cerritos College, where he enjoyed great success. He helped the women’s cross country team to a 16th-place finish at the state championships and the men’s team to a 10th-place finish in 2009. In the spring of 2010, both the men’s and women’s track and field teams at Cerritos finished third in the state. Laguna coached multiple athletes to both the Southern California and State championships and also coached one athlete to the USATF Junior Championships in Des Moines, IA. That athlete set a new school record in the 800 meters.

Prior to Cerritos College, Laguna was at East Los Angeles College for four years, first as an assistant coach and then head coach for the cross country and track and field programs. He was instrumental in the programs’ success as they reached top-10 finishes respectively. Individual state champion and school record holder Oscar Ogwara was among the athletes he coached.

Laguna was also the head girls cross country and track and field coach at Rosemead High School, where his teams captured three consecutive league titles in his five years there.

In addition to other stints at El Monte, Alhambra, and Huntington Park high schools and Rio Hondo Junior College, Laguna was an assistant coach at USC, where he was involved in coaching several All-Americans in the distance events.

Laguna possesses USATF Level-I Certification.

He graduated from USC with a bachelor’s degree in international relations and he received his Master’s from Cal State L.A. in political science. While at USC, he competed in the track and field and cross country programs and was also in the marching band.

He currently teaches political science at various community colleges.

In preparation for the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, Cal State L.A. was selected as one of six sites to construct a world-class training track. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on January 29, 1982.

The initial surface selected by the L.A. Organizing Committee for the track was “Recaflex S.” This surface, known for its versatility, is hard enough to record fast times but still soft enough to allow for a regular training regiment.

The track was officially dedicated on May 22, 1983, during the L.A. Regional Championships of the ARCO Jesse Owens Games.

As a member of Cal State L.A.’s track and field team from 1983 to 1985, she had many top finishes sandwiched around an eighth-place finish for her native Jamaica in the 1984 Olympics. Then Farmer-Patrick’s career really accelerated. In 1987, she just missed a medal in the 400m hurdles at the World Championships in Rome. As a 400m hurdler for the U.S., she won a silver medal at the 1992 Olympics, gold medal at the 1989 and 1992 World Cups, gold medal at the 1990 Goodwill Games, and numerous other medals. Competing in glamorous skirt-outfits, she launched a side career starring in many television commercials. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial psychology and a master’s degree in human resources. At the 2004 summer Olympic Games, she served as the lead athlete services coordinator for all sports. She currently chairs the USA Track & Field’s Athlete’s Advisory Committee and serves as the United States Olympic Committee’s athlete representative. Farmer-Patrick is married to another Olympic hurdler, David

Sandra Farmer-Patrick Patrick. They have a son and a daughter.
