He is the most effective educator who aims less at perfecting specific acquirements that at producing that mental condition which renders acquirements easy, and leads to their useful application; who does not seek to make his pupils moral by enjoining particular courses of action, but by bringing into activity the feelings and sympathies that must issue in noble action. -

Peter the Great and His Changing Identity Senior History Honors Thesis May 11, 2016 Emiley Pagrabs Pagrabs 1 Introduction Well aware of the perception that foreigners held of him, Peter the Great would never apologize for his nationality or his country. A product of his upbringing, Peter did have some qualities that many foreigners criticized as barbaric and harsh. Said Peter: They say that I am cruel; that is what foreigners think of me, but who are they to judge? 1 A Century of Social Psychology: Individuals, Ideas, and Investigations GEORGE R. GOETHALS ^ f INTRODUCTION This chapter tells an exciting story of intellectual discovery. At the start of the twentieth century, social psy- chology began addressing age-old philosophical questions using scientific methods. What was the nature of human nature, and did the human condition make it possible for people to work together for good rather than for evil? Social pschology first addressed these questions by looking at the overall impact of groups on individuals and then began to explore more refined questions about social influence and social perception. How do we understand persuasion, stereotypes and prejudice, differences between men and women, and how culture affects thoughts and behavior? Leadership Attributes of Female Secondary Career and Technical
LEADERSHIP ATTRIBUTES OF FEMALE SECONDARY CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION TEACHERS IN GEORGIA by TEDRA HAYNES WHITE (Under the Direction of Bettye P. Smith) ABSTRACT Transformational leadership recognizes that those not in formal administrative positions have authority and influence. Distributed leadership is transformational leadership in education and is defined by the influence that is exhibited by individuals at all levels rather than just the people at the top (Leithwood et al, 2007). This type of leadership suggests that every person in any position can demonstrate leadership in some way (Coleman, 2005). With this understanding of distributive leadership, it is likely that more teachers will find themselves with leadership responsibilities. Teacher leadership is exhibited through a variety of formal and informal roles and positions (Gronn, 2000; Leithwood et al., 2007). Women are expected to be less effective leaders and face stereotyping as a significant barrier to the quest for advanced leadership roles (Sanchez-Hucles and Davis, 2010). As with women in leadership in other industries, women are an underutilized resource for leadership in CTE and therefore the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between leadership attributes, and professional characteristics and leadership attributes and personal characteristics of secondary female teachers in career and technical education programs in Georgia. Leadership attributes, professional and personal characteristics were investigated because insight into these attributes and characteristics may influence the emergence of teacher leadership for female secondary CTE teachers. The sample for this study was 179 female secondary CTE teachers in Georgia. Over 30% (32%) of the desired sample participated in the study. Study findings revealed that the female secondary CTE teachers rated 12, or 32.43%, of the attributes as very descriptive of themselves and rated 25, or 67.57%, of the attributes as being somewhat descriptive to descriptive of them. -

Leadership of Introverts
MASTER THESIS Leadership of Introverts ‐ An exploratory study of how introvert managers lead in Sweden Anna Emanuelsson and Sandra Lindqvist Submission date: 26 May 2014 Supervisor: Dr. Marie Aurell Examiner: Dr. Urban Ljungquist Blekinge Institute of Technology, School of Management, MBA Abstract Purpose – The purpose of the present study was to shed light on the relatively unknown field of introvert leadership and to identify how introverted leaders use their innate personality to become effective and successful leaders. Design/methodology/approach – Survey methodology was used to assess the occurrence of introvert leaders in a company. Also, six introvert managers working in knowledge-intensive companies were interviewed and asked about how they use introvert traits in their leadership. Findings – The study results show that introvert leaders do exist. Furthermore, the results from the study indicate that the traits the introverted leader embrace the most are engaged listening, taking quiet time, having focused and deep conversations and a methodical and structured way of working. These traits were used in an informing, consulting and supporting way in order to engage subordinates, solve conflicts, making decision and influencing others as well as in strategic planning. The findings suggest that introvert leadership can be connected to a participative or leadership-member exchange leadership style. Research implications – The research findings contribute to the understanding of introvert leadership and how introvert traits are used in engaging and empowering subordinates, conflict handling, decision-making and influencing others. Practical implication – The findings in this study have shown that introvert traits can be as powerful as extrovert traits in leadership and hence the common perception that a leader needs to possess extroverted traits as well as charisma in order to be successful needs to be revisited. -

Jung, The writing self InterDisciplines 2 (2010) The writing self Rousseau and the author’s identity Theo Jung Introduction »The History of the world«, the British historian, novelist and literary critic Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) famously wrote in his On heroes, hero- worship and the heroic in history, »is but the Biography of great men« (Carlyle 1840: 34). »They were the leaders of men, these great ones; the model- lers, patterns, and in a wide sense creators, of whatsoever the general mass of men contrived to do or to attain« (3). Naturally, not all agreed with this view. One outspoken contemporary critic of this type of his- toriography as the serial biography of a number of heroes was the phi- losopher and sociologist Herbert Spencer (1820–1903). In the second chapter of his classic The study of sociology he posed the question if there could be such a thing as a social science. At least two groups, he thought, would deny such a possibility. Those who saw the hand of Providence at work with every historical phenomenon were bound to write history as a series of acts of God. As every event was individually produced by a di- vine will which could change at any moment this could not, properly speaking, be an object of science. The second group, »allied« to the first and »equally unprepared to interpret sociological phenomena scientifi- cally«, was made up of those who interpreted the course of civilization as the mere »record of remarkable persons and their doings« (Spencer 1874: 30). Needless to say, what Spencer termed the »great-man-theory« of history was not at all to his taste. -

INTRODUCTION TO POLITICAL PSYCHOLOGY This comprehensive, user-friendly textbook on political psychology explores the psychological origins of political behavior. Elena Mastors (Ph.D., Washington State University) is Vice President and Dean of Applied Research at the American Public University System.
