Financial matters were always going to be at the forefront of most decisions this season after the worse than expected result from last year. As such, the Finance and Administration Committee held a meeting at the start of the season and another mid-season where the budget and financial reports were discussed heavily. The Committee had to knock back a number of budget requests at first, but agreed to review them midway through the season. As a result of increases in fundraising (through Surf Girl), grants and sponsorship and a containment of expenses, the Club reassessed some of the budget requests and approved the majority of them later in the season.

The season was a challenge to balance full-time physio work, surf boating, eating and surf girl duties. Anna SALKELD I held over 20 major fundraising events. Many of my fundraising ideas were dually aimed at getting much needed funds for the surf club as well as building club If you can imagine this, then you can sort of picture morale. I tried some new ideas including Pilates and my year representing Metropolitan Caloundra SLSC as massage days on the beach, a drums workshop night Conrad Jupiters Summer Surf Girl…many a midnight and a Magical Mystery Pub and Winery Tour. Most rendezvous in the surf club office, emptying my wallet outstanding of all these efforts were the festivities, into the fundraising chocolate box, meetings in the games, competitions, mock rescues and Human Surf gutter with helpful neighbours, cheeks hurting from Life Saving Flag created on Australia Day. The total fundraising efforts of all surf girls this year was

As the year progressed I became increasingly more passionate about surf lifesaving as I came to learn more and more. It was a fun experience doing education talks at schools and setting up displays throughout the community. It was great to work among some of the most generous, talented, ambitious and kind-hearted people I have come across in my life.

Throughout the year I have made an extraordinary number of friends and contacts, all of which have been so very supportive. Thank you to everyone, particularly my girls and coach: Jan, Paula, Cathy…and Molly. those parents that help each week, even in a small way, thank you so much, without you we couldn’t run on a Sunday. For those families that had their first year with Karen the Mets family, I hope you enjoyed the experience and BRAY will be back with us next year and bring along your friends. The more children (and parents) we can have educated about the beach and how to be safe in a fun environment, the better.

The club saw an increase in the number of nippers Firstly, I’d like to thank my family for supporting me registered for the year 264, with particularly large in my first year in this role. I know they get frustrated numbers in the younger age groups. sometimes, but it’s never for too long!! Although I have Rhett introduced a new concept of skill identification been with the club for the past 8 years in varying roles, and training that was available of the website outlining this was my first shot at the Director role. I was quite the skills needs to be achieved for each age group with apprehensive to start off with, however as the year Jeff, Bill and the age managers working on these skills started to get going and I settled in and managed to be on the Sunday mornings and also at training sessions surrounded by a great group of volunteers to take on all that the children attended. This concept seemed to the roles required, I felt much more comfortable. The work very well and reinforced the continuing shift of nipper component of the surf club has run quite well this focus from competition to skill acquisition and fun. year, given this support and commitment by both the The ratio of children attending carnivals in relation to office bearers and the general parent involvement and our membership numbers was around the 10% mark for this I thank you, it makes my job a lot easier. To all and given this percentage our results at carnivals were very pleasing. It is wonderful to watch the children continually improve on their skills and see the sheer excitement on their faces when this happens.

Our water safety numbers this year were fantastic, with many new faces in the stunning orange vests. It is very pleasing to see the number of parents that are keen to become part of the club, help the children and improve their own knowledge and skills at the same time. Thanks to Steve and Robyn Kent for taking on the Water Safety coordinator roles this season and also a thanks to those parents and grandparents that turned up each week regardless of the weather conditions and took to

the water with tube and a big smile. To all the nippers, you continue to surprise me with your talent and energy both on Sundays and at carnivals. You The age managers were again enthusiastic and it was make Sunday mornings very enjoyable. To the gang great to see some new faces coming into the Age in the U14’s, I’m sure you will continue to have great Manager roles even though at times (as is normal success and fun at the senior carnivals and I’d love to on a Sunday morning) there were puzzled looks and see you on Sunday mornings for water safety, if you apprehension, but that all got washed away when we get a chance. On that note, we still have a way to go got to the beach. There was one Age Manager (that will to retain and encourage our nippers to transition to the remain nameless) who seemed to get this ability and his senior ranks, especially those that are not surf sports age mixed up and needed some medical attention one competitors, however that is a priority for the club in the points day – but apart from that there were no issues on coming year so keep an eye out and get involved in the the beach. development of this worthy program. I would like to thank Rob Daniec and Neil Anderson Karen Bray for taking on the role of Deputy Director to back me up Director of Junior Activities in my first year. Danae Richter for being a great Team Manager; Suzanne for taking on the Carnival Convenor role again; Donna and Jo for running the canteen; Dad (Barry Thomas) for setting up the beach each Sunday morning and the many other behind the scenes helpers. To Jeff and Bill for volunteering their time to provide training for the members, thanks for your efforts and patience!!!! To Rhett for his training and education program and his assistance throughout the year. Thanks to Kay and Dennis in the Office for their support and assistance this year.
