A big thank you to all the officials who represented the club Matthew over the carnival season, and congratulations to Barry RICHARDS Weatherall for his success in winning Official of the Year at the SLSQ Awards night.

It has been extremely pleasing to see the bulk of the Board of Management carrying on in their positions and providing a level of stability to the ongoing direction in which the club is heading. We have now also embarked on a strategic planning process to map out the future direction of the club which will prove invaluable to the club maintaining its position as a leader in surf lifesaving.

I would like to thank Simon Richards, Deb Hoogvliet and Kay Blokkeerus for their commitment and energy in Club Captain Kirsten Phillips and other members meet Governor- keeping the administrative and financial side of the club General Michael Jefferies on Australia Day running over the past 12 months. This task is becoming increasingly more complex and time consuming and we will are looking at employing staff to reduce the time asked of our volunteers.

Kirsten Phillips deserves a special mention for the time and dedication she has put into the club over the past 12 months. After originally taking on the role of Vice Captain she was thrown in the deep end when Jody Pehrson moved interstate and Kirsten took over the role of Club Captain. She has worked tirelessly in this position and has made a number of changes to various aspects of lifesaving which will be of long term benefit to the club.

In the surf sports arena the club has continued to improve in all areas, including swim, beach, craft, ironman, surf boats and junior activities. This was highlighted by the clubs third placing in Branch in U16- Open and our sixth placing in the XXXX Premiership. Team Manager Simon Richards once again led our Easter patrols

My year representing the Club in this promotion was upon me. extremely rewarding - not only did I grow personally, but By the time you read this I will be back in chilly Melbourne the most rewarding experience was the insight I gained where I am based as a Flight Attendant with Virgin Blue (a into fundraising in the community. This is a task which I major sponsor of the promotion), but I can't wait to get initially thought would just fall into place, but I now back on sunny Kings Beach with you all once again. have a better understanding of the highs and lows that fundraising for a charity brings and the amount of Thank you to the Club for giving me this opportunity and wonderful people out there who do volunteer work, my very best wishes to Met Caloundra's next entrant. Let's sometimes with little recognition. Fundraising for the all get right behind her and bring another title back home to Club in this event, as I said, has been a lesson in life for our Club. me and I thank the Club for giving me this opportunity. I Peta Bayley now know that any person who takes on a volunteer job Conrad Jupiter's Summer Surf Girl Miss Personality 2004 for charity clubs or organisations only ever deserves a pat on the back and I want to give a huge pat on the back to everyone who assisted me in whatever way it was - big or small, successfully or unsuccessfully - if you tried on my behalf, then, THANK YOU.

Although the year did not exactly pan out the way I envisaged, due to my unexpected transfer to Melbourne when my partner, Luke, took up a New Year position with the Richmond Tigers Football Club, with the support of my amazing parents, I was able to hang in there. I also had a great support team in Sheridan, Nicole, Brooke, Dan and Jimmy who were generous in their encouragement and support - thank you. To all the people who helped out with Friday night raffles, selling chocolates, organising donations, approaching possible sponsors, and supporting my fashion parade and other events which sometimes did not get off the ground despite all the effort - thank you to you all. Thank you Kirsten Phillips, our Club Captain, for much needed words of wisdom and encouragement when I needed it Met Caloundra's Summer Surf Girl 2003-2004 Peta Bayley most.

Thank you to the many sponsors who gave to me - Amcor Fibre Packaging, Grand View Hotel and Betty Boo Boutique (both of Cleveland), Bros Nielsen, Woolworths Supermarket Cleveland, Brisbane Lions Football Club, Rydges Oasis Resort Caloundra, Rolling Surf Resort and Greg Gardiner Photography (to mention just a few) and all my friends, relatives and neighbours.

Well, my year as the Club's entrant has come to a close and culminated in a Gala Ball at Conrad Jupiter's Casino on Saturday 8th May. I was absolutely humbled by my fellow entrants to have the title of "Conrad Jupiter's Summer Surf Girl Miss Personality 2004" bestowed Peta Bayley, far left, took out the Miss Personality Award

members, not such a bad thing. Our resuscitation standard needs to be raised.

Should I be reappointed as club supervisor I intend to Tom spend more time training the R&R teams started this HOLMES season, and with the junior and senior clubs in the lifesaving competitions. For me this means not officiating at carnivals as there is not enough time for both.

As you know I swim almost every day and I would really This season has flown by but was enjoyable. Again we had like to see more ACTIVE members out in the water. That is a number of members gaining additional awards as well as what surf lifesaving is about. quite a few new members gaining their Bronze Medallion. As a club we lack some depth across most areas. Congratulations! Engaging some of the older members is one way other "The system" is changing and the interim period has been clubs have built that depth. Maybe we should give it a try? rather painful. SLSA has become a registered training Tom Holmes organisation (RTO) which brings into line with the national training framework. In doing so the awards we gain as lifesavers can be now recognised in the workplace. This will be beneficial to some members in their field of employment.

Being an RTO means some changes in the way we train and examine. It also meant that every member wanting to be a trainer or examiner (now termed assessor) had to have a qualification to train and or assess, something that some members found hard to accept. The upside is that qualification is recognised in other sports and in the workplace. Patrolling over the Easter holidays, from left, Dan Creedy, Dylan Newbiggin, Aaron Jones, Sheridan Harper, and Sonia Barraud Not only has this had an impact on our training but it had members thinking about the structure under which we work as an association. Accordingly I congratulate Simon Richards on his forward thinking and on the proposal he put forward to the Sunshine Coast Branch for a restructure in the manner in which the boards of lifesaving and surf sports worked. That proposal has been accepted and expanded in a proposed new representation structure and operation of these boards.

As training packages come on line in the coming season we will hopefully see a more consistent approach to the assessment of awards albeit more rigorous and more paperwork for the assessor.

This will impact across proficiencies and whilst it may seem tough on volunteers, the performance level will by necessity be higher. All this means for members is that they train for the swim components and practice for the Tom Holmes gives Gemma Newbiggin and Shona McClelland the run resuscitation component so that they present as competent down on the swim course at the Club Championships

The four Australian title medals were all won by members of the youth development squad. Their achievements have already been previously acknowledged and I would like to single out some other Mark significant efforts such as Lance Hipkin's and Owen GREGG Hall's IRB contributions, Owen and Jemma Tresise in the Branch Patrol Competition and Kristle Martin's coaching of Junior R & R teams. Also certain members helped as Junior Activity "Water Safety". Once again there were a variety of social activities for Special thanks to Roger Newbiggin and Grant McKenzie youth members, culminating in the end of season trip to as Under 19 and Cadet officers and also to Debbie Fingal. Movie nights once again proved a hit although Jones, Michelle McKenzie, Lindy Kosior and Tess Martin at the time I queried the suitability of "Jason v Freddy", for their tireless efforts as "dorm mothers". Finally thanks and "Pirate of the Caribbean" and "American Pie - the to Barry Weatherall and Donna Wright for tolerating our Wedding" were well received. The annual dinner for the efforts at the clubhouse. I hope everyone had fun! Board of Management took on a different theme this year and seafood should probably not be included next Mark Gregg year.

A venture to Sydney for the Australia Day weekend proved a pleasant change from the serious nature of the XXXX Surf Series. Highlights such as a ride on the Manly ferry, walking through Chinatown during New Year celebrations and celebrity spotting (I will never forget the sight of Tony Bonner sitting on the Manly SLSC or Rex Mossop allowing me to park in the official Manly car park) make this venture a possible annual consideration.

The end of year trip to Fingal was blessed with perfect weather (a pleasant change from previous visits to Rainbow Beach and Point Lookout). A thoroughly enthusiastic group of Under 14s inspired all members to Junior members kick back at the Aussie Titles enjoy themselves. Sadly we didn't unearth any hidden talent in "Fingal Idol", but I believe one team's attempt at the Bee Gees' "Staying Alive" made the late Maurice Gibb turn in his grave. Special mention should go to young Grant Martin for his attempts to croon over an Enrique Iglesias tune and the touching duo of Emily Roberts and Robert Gregg who reduced everyone to tears with their version of Delta Goodrem's "Born to Try".

Youth development members once again excelled in many fields of surf lifesaving this year. A review of the patrol hours log will see the top three places being filled by members of this age group. Major contributions were also made by many other youth members who despite other commitments made wonderful Merry Christmas - Grant McKenzie and Mark Gregg with Santa aka contributions on the beach. The conditions were quite challenging and enabled our children to demonstrate the skills that had acquired or improved upon over the past year. We had a team of 39 children that attended the State Titles and had some fantastic results both from a medal and a "guts and determination" perspective. All children that competed gave their best effort and supported their fellow team mates, with some children surprising even themselves with their results.

Annual Report | 2003 / 2004 Season | 57 Supporters Club President

The Supporters Club once again paid a management fee of $100,000 to the Caloundra RSL which has been donated by the RSL back to the Surf Club. These funds are being set aside to assist with the impending redevelopment of the club. We probably thought the same 12 months ago - but we now believe the club has reached its maximum potential with the Matthew facilities currently available. Any growth in profitability with the RICHARDS current facilities can only be incremental at best. For the first time we are in a position where our success rather than our desire dictates that we need a new clubhouse. It gives me great pleasure to present to our members the 2004 With this success also comes the ability to negotiate in real Annual Report for the Metropolitan Caloundra Surf Life Saving terms with builders, Council and financiers in the knowledge Supporters Club. that a new clubhouse is a serious and achievable outcome. The result for the year has been outstanding - a net profit of In the past twelve months we have prepared a detailed $210,357 after depreciation, donations and management fees. Business Plan to support the construction of a new clubhouse; This compares favorably to the comparable net profit reported engaged club specialists to design a new club; and last year of $20,870. commenced serious negotiations with Caloundra City Council, Significant improvement has been made from last year as the Department of Natural Resources and several banks to referred to by Tony Costain in his accompanying report. This begin turning this long held ambition into a reality. I would like has been achieved with very little in additional capital to thank Des Dwyer, Ken O'Connell and Steve Fromont for their expenditure but largely through excellent management of costs tireless efforts in this regard. and improved productivity. Thank you to my fellow committee members this year for your I would like to congratulate Operations Manager Julie Richards, support and dedication to the club and its ongoing Assistant Manager Careen Prior and the rest of the team who development. Thank you also to the Caloundra RSL have worked tirelessly to produce this excellent result. The Management and Boards for the time and energy they have put entire Management Team at the RSL headed by Tony Costain into the continued success of our unique partnership. very positive rate on the eventual rebuilding of the Surf Club.

All going to plan this master plan development will be undertaken over the next couple of years and will then provide lifesaving and Supporters Club facilities the Tony equal of any on offer in this country. COSTAIN Finally to you the members I must thank you for your support, the RSL is very proud to be associated with On behalf of the Caloundra RSL Management Services Surf Lifesaving and we look forward to also being able team I am pleased to report on the 2003-2004 trading to offer ongoing assistance in the future to what will year's results. become a facility we can all be justifiably proud of.

The past 12 months have proven to be very progressive Tony Costain A.C.C.M. in the continual rebirth of the club. Systems, Group General Manager procedures and I believe service and quality standards are also now well embedded.

Financially, I also believe your club is now in a very sound financial position, especially in direct comparison to two years ago.

In relation to the trading results food and beverage have both continued on from last year with significant business growth.

Bar sales of $676,476 produced a growth of $60,449 or 9.81% on the previous year, while catering sales of $608,063 produced a magnificent growth of $126,913 or 26.40%.

Gaming was also positive at $3,905,944, a growth of

$877,906 or 29%. Masters competitor Stephen Maitland This resulted in a very pleasing net cash operating profit of $381,199 up from last year's $192,588 by $188,642 or an annual cash operating profit growth of 98% on last year (prior to depreciation, loan repayments and other non-cash operating expenses).

These results would not have been possible without firstly, the direct efforts of Julie Richards and her highly dedicated team and secondly, the equally high quality working relationship between Matt Richards, his Committee and Club Management.

Congratulations to Matt and Simon and the rest of the guys - the level of support you have given to us has been exceptional.

As some of you may already be aware due to the financial operational upturn, planning is progressing at a Phoebe Kosior crosses the line in the Under 16 Surf Race at the Aussie titles
