• BENNINGTON WRITING SEMINARS MA/MFA PROGRAM IN WRITING AND LITERATURE THE COURSEOF STUDY The Bennington Writing Seminars at Bennington College offer a low-residency Master of Arts (M.A.) or Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) degree in Writing and Literature. This two-year graduate program involves intense ten-day residency periods at Bennington College during Januaryand August of each year. To complete the program, four semesters and five residencies are required. Between residencies, students spend the six-month semesters corresponding directly with faculty who teach as part of the program's core staff. Additionalfaculty participate as associate staff during the 10-day residency periods, teaching literature from a writer's point of view. The five residencies feature workshops, readings, lectures and discussions of literature, and an ongoing investigation of what constitutes the world of letters. In keeping '0.ith Bennington's progressive tradition, the course of study in the Seminars is largely self-structured by the student. Students, in consort with the core staff, form their own reading lists, and submit interpretive and original work-fiction, nonfiction, and poetry-forcritique at regular intervals throughout the semester. The tutorial and development of individual work is at the heartof the program, as it is at the heart of Bennington College and its other graduate programs in dance, music, and the visual arts. Students are expected to devote at least twenty-five hours each week to their writingand reading, and a successfully completed semester's work is granted sixteen hours of graduate credit. To receive the M.F.A., each student will create and submit a manuscript of fiction, nonfiction, or poetry at the end of the program. -

Van Damme 1 Karen Van Damme Dr. Leen Maes Master thesis English literature 30 July 2008 The evolution of Nathan Zuckerman in Philip Roth’s The Ghost Writer and Exit Ghost. 0. Introduction I was introduced to Philip Roth and the compelling voice of his fiction during a series of lectures on the topic of Jewish-American authors by Prof. Dr. Versluys in 2006 at Ghent University. The Counterlife (1986) was one of the novels on the reading list, in which I encountered for the first time his famous protagonist, Nathan Zuckerman. Ever since I have read this novel, I have been intrigued by Roth‟s work. My introduction to Jewish-American writing has made a lasting impression through him, which is why the choice was an easy one to make when we were asked to select a topic for this master thesis. I will not be dealing with Philip Roth‟s whole oeuvre, since the man is such a prolific writer and his work is in title to a thorough discussion. I will write about the first and the last novel in his Zuckerman-series, namely The Ghost Writer (1979) and Exit Ghost (2007). Nathan Zuckerman can be seen as Roth‟s alter-ego, an American- Jewish writer with a sharp pen. Since I have, unfortunately, only had the opportunity to read four of the eight Zuckerman-novels, I want to make it absolutely clear that the two novels mentioned here will be the sole basis for my analysis of the story-line and the character named Nathan Zuckerman. -

The stage was set for the rich multicultural setting in the period. From My Jewish Learning we understand, Jewish American literature has chronicled and paralleled the Jewish American experience. It depicts the struggles of immigrant life, the stable yet alienated middle-class existence that followed, and finally the unique challenges of cultural acceptance: assimilation and the reawakening of tradition. During the last quarter of the twentieth century young new Jewish writers like Saul Bellow, Bernard Malamud, Cynthia Ozick, E.L. Doctorow and Philip Roth dealt impressively with the experience of immigrants in the United States of America. As the world passes through different stages in the field of politics, social life, scientific developments and economic welfare, the questions of assimilation and solidarity arises increasingly. Certainly the problems in the assimilation stage the immigrants are left with options to stick to their traditions. It is in such a set up the Jewish American writer Philip Roth (1933-2018) came out with his writings embodying therein the features for investigation. -

Introduction
ONE Introduction “Sheer Playfulness and Deadly Seriousness” There are combinations of pleasure and pain . in tragedy and comedy, not only on stage but on the greater stage of human life. —Plato, Philebus 50B PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING AUTHOR Philip Roth combines “sheer playfulness and deadly seriousness”1 as he derides the self-deceiving misconceptions of a complacent society obsessed with acquiring prestige and material success. Roth is well known for the caustic humor with which he treats our age, the Jewish community, and himself. Sometimes his criticism takes shape as offen- sive humor exaggerating the foibles and weaknesses of the Jewish community. It also can be self-lacerating, focusing on Roth’s own psychological frailties. Through the comic mode, Roth makes us aware that we live in a bizarre car- toon world where the ludicrous and the calamitous merge, a world in which black humor keeps reappearing and we do not know whether to laugh or cry. Roth’s style can be compared to that of a stand-up comedian such as Lenny Bruce. He often delights in telling a joke for its own sake. He employs the laughable for comic relief. He utilizes the comic to address serious issues that underlie the satire. He uses fast-moving exchanges that could be termed a “kind of stand-up comedy,” where clashing positions are shrilly declared. Robert Alter points out that the shrill, comic interchanges are “what Jewish comedians of the ’50s used to call ‘spritz’” (Alter, “Spritzer” 34). A descendant of Boston’s Brahmin elite, Bradlee lived in an atmosphere of wealth and privilege as a young child, but after his father lost his position following the stock market crash of 1929, the family lived without servants as his father made ends meet through a series of odd jobs.
