Course Syllabus: MENG 6510: Eminent Writers, Ralph Waldo Emerson Instructor: Dr. John Schwiebert Office: EH #457 Phone: 626-6289 e-mail: [email protected] Office hours: XXX, or by appointment Course Overview Ralph Waldo Emerson was the central figure in the American Literary Renaissance of the middle nineteenth century. Numerous writers, American and worldwide, then and since, have felt his influence, and many of his ideas have become mainstays of the American vocabulary. For instance, Emerson popularized the term “self-reliance,” and much of what is best and most enduring in American intellectual history has affinities with ideas in his essays, poems, journals, and other writings. Emerson’s main interest, throughout his life, was in processes: natural and physical processes, creative processes, and spiritual; how to read, how to write, how to think and grow, and above all, how to live. In Emerson’s view nothing is static, least of all his own writings. A course in Emerson cannot properly be limited to Emerson as a “subject,” because for Emerson the “subject” was always living people, e.g, you and me, who are tasked with the challenge of creating their own lives out of a living past. Accordingly, we will treat Emerson’s works less as ends in themselves than as means to our own intellectual growth and creativity. 2 Go The Plot Against America by Philip Roth Discussion Questions 1. In what ways does The Plot Against America differ from conventional historical fiction? What effects does Roth achieve by blending personal history, historical fact, and an alternative history? 2. The novel begins "Fear presides over these memories, a perpetual fear" [p. 1]. With this sentence Roth establishes that his story is being told from an adult point of view by an adult narrator who is remembering what befell his family, over sixty years earlier, when he was a boy between the ages of seven and nine. Why else does Roth open the novel this way? What role does fear play throughout the book? 3. How plausible is the alternative history that Roth imagines? How would the world be different if America had not entered the war, or entered it on the side of Germany? 4. When the Roth family plans to go to Washington, young Philip wants to take his stamp collection with him because he fears that, since he did not remove the ten- cent Lindbergh stamp, "a malignant transformation would occur in my absence, causing my unguarded Washingtons to turn into Hitlers, and swastikas to be im- printed on my National Parks" [p. 57]. What does this passage suggest about how the Lindbergh election has affected the boy? Where else does this kind of magical thinking occur in the novel? 5. His parents are Russian Immigrants. His writings have universal appeal. Malamud is mainly preoccupied with the complex faith of being a Jew. The major concerns of Malamud's heroes are suffering, commitment and responsibility. Despite their guilt-ridden past, they suffer for a new life. Suffering enabled by their commitment and gratitude towards a more perfect life. These acts of heroism are not acts of self, but derived from or created responsibility towards another soul. The moral vision of Malamud synthesizes values common to Judaic, Greek and Christian traditions. Thus, it is pertinent to not that all the major Malamudian chracters to become more human through their journey of sufferings. They offers the possibility of humanism for the sufferers and that is central to the moral vision. In this article I would like to discuss the characters of Bernard Malamud, with special reference to his second novel The Assistant. -

May 2020 Dear Student, You are enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition for the coming school year. Bowling Green High School has offered this course since 1983. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. You should be advised that some of these texts are sophisticated and contain mature themes and/or advanced levels of difficulty. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. I have found that even good students—like you—need to refine, mature, and improve their writing skills. You will have to work diligently at revising major essays. -

Novelists, at these moments, have found it necessary to define what differentiates the novel from other media and what makes the novel a viable form of art and communication in the age of images. At the same time, writers have expanded the novel form by borrowing conventions from these newer media. I describe this process of differentiation and interaction between the novel and other media as a “media assemblage” and argue that our understanding of the development of the novel in the twentieth century is incomplete if we isolate literature from the other media forms that compete with and influence it. The concept of an assemblage describes a historical situation in which two or more autonomous fields interact and influence one another. On the one hand, an assemblage is composed of physical objects such as TV sets, film cameras, personal computers, and publishing companies, while, on the other hand, it contains enunciations about those objects such as claims about the artistic merit of television, beliefs about the typical audience of a Hollywood blockbuster, or academic discussions about canonicity. -

No need to take out your map and look at it: it won’t appear on a traditional USGS map and a search on Google Maps will yield no result. Beck Stow’s swamp is somewhere out there, but it is located on a different plane of existence. The swamp does appear on some maps, but they belong to a very specific category: those reproduced at the end of certain editions of Thoreau’s works. The name of the swamp will indeed be familiar to his readers, as he evokes it several times in his writing, especially his Journal1. -

Canonicity and the American Public Library: The Case of American Women Writers Sarah Wadsworth Abstract Beginning with an overview of the debate over American women writers and the academic canon, this essay inventories four clusters of American women writers—domestic novelists, regionalists, mod- ernists, and writers of diverse ethnicities—within a representative sampling of small-town public libraries across the Midwest from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. The survey reveals some surprising disjunctures that run counter to trends in the academy. It also highlights the role publishers and bibliographers have played in establishing favored texts for a general readership and demon- strates that publishers of literary classics and bibliographies geared toward librarians have not always promoted the same texts as their academic counterparts. On the whole, it concludes, women writ- ers fared quite well in the hands of publishers and public libraries promoting “the classics” at the same time that they suffered at the hands of major textbook publishers and scholarly editors intent on defining “the canon.” At the 1981 Modern Language Association annual convention, a “New American Literary History” forum sponsored a special session on the topic “A New American Literature Anthology.” Led by Judith Fetterley and Joan Schulz of the MLA’s Commission on the Status of Women, the session sparked a lively dialogue on the neglect of women writers in Amer- ican literature. The commission had recently undertaken a study of the representation of works by women in standard classroom anthologies, and the results were discouraging. -

Bernard Malamud - 1914-1986
Bernard Malamud - 1914-1986 Bernard Malamud (April 26, 1914 – March 18, 1986) was an American novelist and short story writer. Along with Saul Bellow, Joseph Heller, and Philip Roth, he was one of the best known American Jewish authors of the 20th century. Biography Bernard Malamud was born in 1914 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Bertha (née Fidelman) and Max Malamud, Russian Jewish immigrants. Malamud entered adolescence at the start of the Great Depression. From 1928 to 1932, Bernard attended Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn. During his youth, he saw many films and enjoyed relating their plots to his school friends. He was especially fond of Charlie Chaplin's comedies. Malamud worked for a year at $4.50 a day (equivalent to $84 in 2019) as a teacher-in-training, before attending college on a government loan. He received his B.A. degree from City College of New York in 1936. In 1942, he obtained a master's degree from Columbia University, writing a thesis on Thomas Hardy. He was excused from military service in World War II because he was the sole support of his widower father. He first worked for the Bureau of the Census in Washington D.C., then taught English in New York, mostly high school night classes for adults. Starting in 1949, Malamud taught freshman composition at Oregon State University (then Oregon State College, or OSC), an experience fictionalized in his 1961 novel A New Life. Because he lacked the Ph.D., he was not allowed to teach literature courses. While at OSC, he devoted three days out of every week to his writing, and gradually emerged as a major American author. -

PHILIP ROTH AS MORAL ARTIST AT MID-CAREER by James Phelan B.A., Concordia University, 2007 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (English) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) December, 2009 © James Phelan, 2009 Abstract As a serious young man in the nineteen-fifties and early sixties, Philip Roth believed writing fiction was an exalted calling with a high moral purpose. He was a committed social realist with a Lionel- Trilling-like ethics of fiction and a grand, unrealized ambition to write about public life. Then, fifteen years into his career, he wrote Portnoy’s Complaint (1969), a rollicking extravaganza of scurrilous comic invention and exaggerated grievance. Revelling in wildness and transgression, he found a voice that galvanized his talent as nothing before had done. Yet he still seemed to feel bound by his old ethical commitments. This was not the artistic breakthrough he had been hoping for. My paper considers how Roth works at reconciling his deep-seated sense of moral responsibility as a writer with his inescapable talent for imaginative recklessness in three novels, each of which marks a turning point in the middle of his career, Portnoy , The Ghost Writer (1979), and The Counterlife (1986). I take this moral/aesthetic problem to be an important preoccupation of Roth’s and make that preoccupation the basis for readings of the novels. In doing so, I try to show that his ethics and aesthetics are much deeply entangled than is usually acknowledged. In Portnoy he does all he can to contain Alex Portnoy’s rampaging monologue inside a morally proper narrative frame.
