There are many reasons you need to get a scholarship to study abroad.

One of the benefits you’ll enjoy, and why you should really apply for foreign scholarships is that getting a foreign scholarship will help you stay aloof the burden of ever-increasing tuition fees.

When you get a full-ride scholarship or even a partial scholarship abroad, you’d really need not bother when your school is increasing its tuition because your scholarship covers all of it or at least the better part of it.

Secondly, when you get a scholarship, you’ll have all the time you need to focus on your studies. You won’t have to bother on how to raise money for tuition, books, accommodation, or every other concern you may have. The reason is that this scholarship will cover all of that and even more. Thus, it gives you more time to study, gain more knowledge, and secure better grades.

Furthermore, this scholarship will help keep your head above the waters. Sadly, as you may want to know, two-thirds of college students now graduate with loans, and their average college debt is nearly $15,000-$30,000 and sincerely I tell you, getting a scholarship will help save you all of this financial stress.

Another interesting reason why you need to get a scholarship abroad is that awesome feeling-the sense of fulfilment that comes with the thought of going abroad to study for Free. You know that feeling right?

There is a euphoria that usually comes along with going out of one’s home country to study. You’ll be privileged to meet new folks and new teams. You’ll be privileged to grace a new way of life and eat new kinds of dishes and all.

The next reason is the prestige it adds to you and your CV. Acquiring your degree from a foreign university adds a whole lot of respect to your professional stance as you’ll always be allowed to share some of your knowledge and experiences with your team.

Honestly, there are usually so many new things traveling abroad to study brings to you most importantly if you are going to study on a scholarship. The scholarship covers your airfare, accommodation, tuition fees, books, and lots more.

8

What do you need to successfully apply and win the Rhodes Scholarship?

The Rhodes Scholarship Program, as we described at first is a flagship international exchange scholarship program between the UK Government and other countries of the world to sponsor bright minds from their countries.

A report has shown that each passing year, close to 1,800 Rhodes scholarships are awarded to outstanding international students who wish to pursue a Master's or Ph.D. Degree in the .

Like we already said to you in the opening words up there, you are not going to have a free pass to this scholarship. Certain standards are important you meet.

16

Now let’s look at them more closely.

Host Country:

The Rhodes Scholarship is a scholarship program organized by Oxford University in the United Kingdom. The scholarship is offered in the UK. It is a scholarship offered by the bilateral agreement between the government of the United States and other countries.

Eligible Countries:

The Rhodes Scholarship is specially designed to sponsor bright students from developing countries around the world to pursue graduate programs in the UK. Some of the countries eligible for the Rhodes Scholarships include Nigeria.

Documents Required:

Every scholarship program requires that its applicants provide some specified documents for successful application and consideration. This is the same as Rhodes Scholarships. There are some vital documents you’ll need to provide to be eligible for the scholarship.

The following is a list of some of the required documents. These documents are the usual documents required by most schools in the UK.

Documents Required for Rhodes Scholarships include;

 Birth Certificate  Curriculum vitae (CV)  Passport  Head and shoulders photo  Personal statement  Evidence of Residence  Evidence of English Proficiency  Transcript I will kindly explain how you can get these documents required for the application.  Birth Certificate:

17

You can obtain it anywhere in your local authorities or the National Population Commission Office. In most cases, you will be required to obtain an Age Declaration or Affidavit from a court before the birth certificate can be issued.  Curriculum Vitae: This is a written overview of someone's life's work (academic formation, publications, qualifications, etc). This often aims to be a complete record of someone's career and can be extensive. This is different from a resume, which is typically a brief 1-2-page summary of qualifications and work experience. In this very context, Curriculum vitae may also be requested for applicants to scholarships. Rhodes University is not interested in a detailed description of all your jobs and extracurricular activities, although you should definitely include them. They want to see how your experience matches or shows your interest in the program you want to study.  Passport: Assuming you are a Nigerian, you can obtain your International passport with the Nigerian Immigration Services. This can be gotten either going to their office or you apply online.  Head and Shoulders Photo: This is the usual passport photograph that captures from the head and some part below the shoulders. A head and shoulder photo is best with a white background with your full face void of ambiguity. This can be obtained in a studio or maybe if you've got to see anybody with a camera hanging on his neck, just say "Hello", may I get a shot from you, I mean a passport photo? Then wait for a response, I hope he says "YES".  Personal Statement: This is written by the intending scholar who wants to apply for the scholarship. Writing a personal statement is your chance of convincing the scholarship committee that you deserve the scholarship. There are five elements you will need to consider and they include;

1. Personality: Make a unique description of your person not your just your grades but what you as an individual can offer or skills you've got. I hope you got this? Alright!

2. Authenticity: Here, you've got to be honest and genuine. Write about what you hold so dear to your heart and not what you think readers expects.

18

3. Concrete Examples: Scholarship judges have a lot of applications to go through. Make yours unique. Use personal anecdotes and examples.

4. Structure: Here, you have to make your essay flow clearly and concisely which should include; an introduction, body, paragraphs, and a conclusion.

5. Goals: Make sure that your goals are clear to the reader. Organizations award scholarships to invest in a student's futures. Convince them that winning the scholarship will help you achieve your education and career goals.

 Evidence of Residence: This is a document or card required in some regions, allowing a foreign national to reside in a country for a fixed or indefinite length of time.  Evidence of English Proficiency: When applying for a Scholarship abroad, chances are that you will study in English. For this reason, universities need to know that language will not be a barrier to your studies. Imagine where you don't understand Dutch language and a course is being lectured using the language, you will be far off using the word "Damn! I’m really lost in this course", If I may ask, why are you lost, man? I hope your reply will be, “I just can't understand what they are saying". You see, that's why the document on English proficiency will let us know that you can understand and use the English language at an academic level. Here are some certifications that show that truly you are indeed proficient in English. Certificates such as TOEFL, IELTS, CI Advanced, and others.  Transcript: A transcript also known as the transcript of records or academic records is an official document that specifies the courses, research, and training/teaching activities one achieved while in school. It consists of a list of the course units taken, the exams you have passed and credits gained.  Transcript Requirement Academic transcripts give full details about the courses and modules you studied at the undergraduate level and the grades you received. Universities expect these transcripts to be official copies and not screenshots or printed pages from the school where you had your bachelor studies.

19

Yeah! Please try not to forget this part. Once you get your transcript of records, double-check to see if all the required fields are completed, especially; - "Date" - "Signature" - "Stamp of the Institution". If the transcript is incomplete, it may be denied by the university.

Pheww!! Okay! We are already through with this chapter. Go stretch out in a few seconds and let's continue with the next phase.

20

41

Hey there!

Hope you aren't tired of reading!

Okay!

Here in this chapter, we are going to get some vital tips that will make your scholarship application successful. This will make you have adequate knowledge of how to go about your application. It will also help you know the mistakes you ought to avoid, people you will meet to be of help to you, encourage you, and recommend you for the scholarship.

Yes!

We will also give you a detailed guide on how to write scholarship letters but before we delve into that it will be nice knowing some common mistakes to avoid during application.

Common Mistakes to Avoid While Applying for Scholarship

There are certain common mistakes that one can make during scholarship application which you can easily avoid and be among the selected candidates. These mistakes come in various ways and we'll talk about it now.

1. Forgetting to Proofread:

Typos, grammar, and errors are the bane of any application. These mistakes, no matter how tiny, make a bad impression to anyone reviewing the application. Always proofread things before you send them. You can as well, tell someone to help you spot out errors or things that don't make sense.

2. Missing Deadlines:

One of the worst things that could happen after you put in all the work of crafting an application is finding out you were late. Deadlines are strict in the scholarship world and sometimes, students find themselves out of luck and out of time if they don't pay attention. To avoid this, try marking down the due dates on whatever calendar you use. Set reminders on your phone. You can even set the due date to a few days before it's due.

42

3. Not Reading the Fine Print:

Many scholarships have several eligibility requirements. If a scholarship has, say 6 things a student must be/ have to be eligible for the award, and you only have five of them, don't waste your time(or theirs) by applying. This can also be applicable where there's an age range or a particular CGPAfor application.

Make sure you read the requirements carefully (and then reread to double-check). This goes not only for eligibility requirements but also for application materials. If they need you to send in your latest school transcript, make sure you do!

You don't want to lose out on a scholarship just because you missed a tiny detail.

4. Pay to Play:

If a scholarship you're applying to ever requests an application fee, DO NOT APPLY. It is almost certainly a scam. Scholarships are about getting you money not giving it to online con artists. If you see them asking for cash, run like the wind.

Recommendation Letters:

45

The recommendation letter will not be written by you as a scholarship applicant but rather by someone you know and you are sure the person knows more about you too.

Rhodes Scholarship committee, may not care about your grades and resume alone when they evaluate if you are the right candidate for the scholarship. They also want to know what others think of your work, experience, wit, and character. That's why you'll often be required to provide recommendation letters for your scholarship application.

What's the Difference Between a Letter of Recommendation and a Reference Letter?

In the application requirements, you'll either be asked to provide letters of recommendation or reference letters. You might think that they are the same but, in theory, the two are very different.

A "letter of recommendation" is required explicitly by an academic program and should be sent directly to the university by the professor or employer without you seeing it. The document should be 300-400 words long and should present your character, accomplishments, and abilities from an objective perspective.

A "letter of reference" is often given directly to you by the referee and you can keep it for future use. Such a letter is normally addressed as "To Whom it may Concern" or "Dear Sir/Madam".

Who should you ask for a letter of Recommendation for your Scholarship Application?

Generally, a recommendation letter is required from a professor or an employer. If you have to provide a recommendation letter from a professor, the document should focus on your academic skills and achievements. If you have to submit a reference letter from an employer, it is expected that it reflects skills that are relevant for your scholarship.

When asking someone for a recommendation letter, it is ideal you pick the right person. Ideally, you should have known that a person for at least six months before asking them for a letter.

Do not under any circumstance, ask for a recommendation letter from;

 Someone who doesn't know you well enough to vouch for your academics and skills.  Someone who might not write you a favorable recommendation letter.

46

Not just anybody! Choose wisely.

What's the Structure of a Recommendation Letter?

A recommendation letter is a formal letter, so it's not the kind of document to get creative with. Your recommender should respect the following structure;

 Introduction: Your referee will present themselves and their relationship with you (e.g. professor, employer, etc) as well as their general impression of you and the time they have known you.  Content: Your referee will argue why they think you are the best candidate for the scholarship, mentioning your educational background, activities, and relevant personality traits.  Closing: Your referee needs to add a strong closing statement that vouches for your application, followed by a standard closing phrase and, his name, contact details, and signature.

It is expected of any intelligent and purposeful student to know that preparation is one of the keys to success. Of all the days, to procrastinate the preparation of any event shouldn't be a night before the D-Day. It is expected that all the necessary preparations ought to be taken care of against the following day.

You don't rejoice when the game is not over yet! If you are bent on being a winner, then, you strive till the end to get the crown.

Hope you got that!

Alright!

A night before the scholarship Interview, ensure you note some basic mantras on how to face the committee of interviewers so you don't have to be too nervous. Here's a part of the mantra you can equally add yours."Take a deep breath, stand up straight, smile, look them in the eye...... "

I will also give you some preparation tips below;

 Know your benefactor. Get to read about biography on Cecil Rhodes or the History about Rhodes Scholarship.  Be up on the news. Not just about your country, get to know about other countries.  Past successful candidates. Try and befriend them and interrogate them at length over their application materials.  Be sure to re-read your transcripts before the interview.  Get to know more about the interview structure and possibly ensure to go through sample questions drawn from cadets' experiences.

How To Dominate Your Interview

The best way to dominate your interview is to think about what the interviewer is looking for.

49

Most candidates, however, only think about themselves and they get so wrapped up in their thoughts, concerns, and abilities and forget what the interviewer wants in the perfect candidate.

You have to understand that interviewers don't want to waste their day talking to boring candidates, they want to check the box that says, "Selected" and get back to work to finish their projects

The majority of the questions are directed at testing the candidate's thought process. Rhodes interviewers are less concerned with the applicant's actual knowledge than with their ability to organize their thoughts and display them in a concise, orderly fashion.

Usually, they don't have difficult questions to ask you. They'll ask you basically what you wrote in your Personal statement or essays amongst some other random questions like, they'd want to know your dream school and why you chose to apply for Rhodes Scholarship.

So, to really crush this moment, here's what to do;

Dominate the interview by changing the entire feel of the conversation. Instead of seeing it as an interrogation, you'll sound like having a discussion with a friend.

Feel free, be lively, and open-minded. Express your thoughts over certain issues or questions asked and don't mind if it doesn't align with the interviewer's thought but ensure that you have reasons to back it up. Simply be eloquent and attack all questions with confidence.

I hope you got that!

Let's continue, we are almost getting to rest our back okay!

Although we have pointed out some things about university-based scholarships when we first started in chapter one, however, here are a few more things that will further help you find other high-end university-based scholarships. This guide will help you narrow down your scholarship search for university-based scholarships.

Note: If you don’t understand what a university-based scholarship is, please do check the first chapter of this book. We took out some time to explain it.

So let’s continue.

When you are searching for university-based scholarship, here are few things you need to take note of;

1. Know your study destination: You must have definitely thought about some locations you want to go study, right? May be in the US, UK, Australia, Canada or any other choice location. So, before you embark on applying for any foreign scholarship, it is important for you to make up your mind of the countries you want to go to. This is to avoid confusion in the process. So, we advise you select at least five countries of choice.

2. Select at least five schools: In each of the countries you selected, you will need to select at least five schools that offer international scholarships. Selecting these five schools does not mean that you are going to apply to all the schools. The aim is to enable you stay focused on what you are pursuing. You will be more focused and committed when searching for scholarships in selected schools. Check the next step. 3. Check if the schools selected offers scholarships for international students: If the school selected do offer scholarships to international students, move to the next step. Then you’ll need to look out for the eligibility requirements to ascertain if you are eligible to apply. If you are eligible to apply, you go ahead and apply immediately. But if the school does not offer scholarships to international students, you’ll need to find and select another school and repeat step 3.

4. Check the scholarship requirements for selected schools: This is almost the same step we gave up there in (3) above. It is very important for you to check if you meet up with the stipulated scholarship requirements for the selected school.

54

If YES, move to the next step. If NO, select another school. PLEASE NOTE: Scholarships are given on merit. You have to prove your worthiness to be awarded the scholarship. 5. Apply: Depending on what your findings are, only one of two things can happen. You can either be eligible or not. So, if you are going to take this step, then it means, you are eligible and can now apply for admission to the school. In some situations, you’ll need to have secured the admission before you can apply for a scholarship following the requirements.
