HEAD OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS UNIT AT THE FCDO The impressive Chevening cohort in the UK in 2019-2020, nearly two thousand strong, has shown how it can be a force for good from the very beginning of the Chevening journey. THE 2019-2020 CHAPTER IN THE CHEVENING STORY In September and October 2019, 1700 new Chevening Scholars arrived in the UK, most of the 160 Chevening-eligible countries and territories, with over 50 scholars each from Mexico, Brazil, China, Nigeria and Indonesia. Scholars adapted to their life in the UK quickly. At the orientation event in October scholars were given guidance to help them settle in. They were inspired by keynote addresses by Rita French, Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva and Ambassador for Human Rights and Vivienne Stern, Director of Universities UK International. Most importantly, this provided the first opportunity to network with Chevening Scholars from different universities, and to meet Secretariat and FCDO staff. The purpose of the Marshall Scholarship, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the British government, is to finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. The award covers tuition, fees, and a generous stipend. Typically, the award lasts for two years, but a limited number of one-year scholarships are awarded. Also, a third-year extension is available for the two-year Marshall in certain cases. Note that the Marshall does not fund undergraduate degrees, the MBA, the MSc/MFE in Financial Economics, the MSc in Global Health Science, the MPP at the University of Oxford, professional degrees, or degrees that require extended periods away from the university or the UK. (This exhibition will not travel. Loans from houses open to view are expected to remain in place until the late summer of 1985 and to be returned before many of the houses open for their visitors in the spring of 1986.)
