    Ladies who became FIRST First Ladies of John Tyler – the Tenth (and final installment) in a Series by Randall Priest This is a story of one President and two ‘First Ladies’ and one ‘stand-in’: Letitia Christian Tyler, Priscilla Cooper Tyler and Julia Gardiner Tyler. Letitia Christian Tyler [Figure 1] was born in 1790 at Cedar Grove plantation in New Kent County, VA, to Col. Robert Christian, a prosperous planter, and Mary Brown Christian. She was shy, quiet, pious, utterly selfless and devoted to family. She met John Tyler [Figure 2] in 1808 when he was a law student. After a five- year courtship, they were married on John’s 23rd birthday when she was 22 at her family’s home. Their 29-year marriage seemed to be a happy one. Figure 1 Letitia and John had seven children who lived to maturity. During their marriage, Letitia avoided the limelight, preferring to take care of the domestic responsibilities of the household, including her time at the White House. She suffered a paralytic stroke in 1839 which left her an invalid. However, her mind was bright and sharp and she was able to manage her home and the required entertaining with verbal instruction from her bedroom suite. Thirty days after the inauguration of William Harrison [Figure 3] to the presidency, he died and Vice President John Tyler assumed the office of President. Letitia turned to her daughter-in-law, Priscilla Cooper Tyler (married to Robert Tyler), to perform the hostess duties. Letitia suffered a second stroke and died on September 10, 1842, at the age of 51.

    ABSTRACT Title of Disserta tion: FIRST LADIES AS POLITICAL WOMEN: PRESS FRAMING OF PRESIDENTIAL WIVES, 1900 – 2001 Lisa M. Burns, Doctor of Philosophy, 2004 Dissertation directed by: Professor Shawn J. Parry -Giles Department of Communication University of Maryland This project contends that press framing of the U.S. first lady institution throughout the twentieth century positioned presidential wives as important public women who were presented as models of American womanhood. An analysis of the print news coverage reveals that the first lady institution serves as a site of ideological contestation over women’s public and political roles, reflecting the intersection of gender, publicity, and power at particular historical mome nts. The press practice of gendered framing draws on often competing ideologies of American womanhood, and in doing so shapes the content of news narratives. The subjects of the stories often become representatives of social gender norms. I call this pract ice personification framing, which is the positioning of a well -known individual as the embodiment of a particular ideology. A personification frame serves as an ideological short cut used by journalists to simplify, in the case of first ladies, the comple xities of gender role performance, making such discussions easier to insert into the limited space of a single news story . An outgrowth of personification framing is the emergence of first ladies as public women , gendered celebrities , political activists , and political interlopers , positioning that reflects press representations of women’s public and political roles at various points in U.S. history. The publicity and scrutiny surrounding gendered performances of the first lady position construct boundarie s of empowerment and containment that help to normalize women’s public activity and domestic empowerment while challenging women’s public and private political influence.

    easthamptonlibrary.org Item of the Week from the Long Island Collection LONG ISLAND COLLECTION | DIGITAL LONG ISLAND | EAST HAMPTON STAR ARCHIVE Julia Gardiner Tyler The image above is a photograph of an oil painting of Julia Gardiner, ca. 1841, attributed to American painter Cephas Giovanni Thompson, which currently resides at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Born on Gardiner's Island in 1820, Julia Gardiner was the daughter of David and Juliana MacLachlan Gardiner. Her father was a lawyer, landowner, and New York State senator, representing the 1st District of Suffolk County from 1824-1828. The product of a prominent and wealthy family, Julia was raised in East Hampton and attended a fashionable boarding school in Manhattan. She was very popular socially, often characterized as being bold and high-spirited, and had many admirers. In fact, one such admirer labeled her "Julia - the Rose of Long Island" in a poem submitted to a local newspaper. When she was 19, Julia scandalized polite society by posing as a model for a department store advertisement, which identified her as "The Rose of Long Island." As the ad did little to conceal her identity and such exhibitionism was unheard of at the time, Julia's family briefly left the country for a grand tour of Europe to escape notoriety. A few months after returning home from Europe, Julia was first introduced to President John Tyler at a White House reception. She evidently caught his eye as he proposed to her later that year, but she refused him.
