NNFASues ACSHDirectors The National Nutritional Foods Association is an industry trade association for retailers, manufacturers, and distributors of "health foods" products. This multindllion (perhaps billion) dollar organization has filed a $1.3 million lawsuit against the directors of the AmericanCouncil for Science and Health, a non-profit consumer education association. The suit alleges that the directors, Dr. Frederick Stare and Dr. Elizabeth Whelan, have malicious ly conspired with columnist Ann Landers, nutritionists, columnists, and other food indus- tries to damageand destroy the business of the NNFAmembers filing the-s.idt. In our judg- ··~·- ment this is a transparent attempt by the financially powerful health foods -industry to si lence a small non-profit consumer education agency and interfere with the civil rights of freedom of speech and the press of Ors. Stare and Whe1an. Lega1 opinions are that this case is ludicrous but it does demonstrate how vulnerable small non-profit organizations are to harrassment. Wewould like to hear from those of you who are attorneys on this matter. A complete copy of the legal complaint is available in our office • . Council Files FTCComplaint on RawMilk Advertisement The council has filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commissionagainst a radio ad by Alta Dena Dairy which appears to contain false and misleading information detrimental to pub lic health. The ad stated that it is 11not necessary to pasteurize milk from clean and heal thy cows.11 It is our understanding that Salmonella dublin can be transmitted from apparently healthy cattle and has no relationship to the cleanliness of the dairy's operation. The fe cal testing of cattle ordinarily used now appears to be insufficient. It has been found that - cows can -be asympt~m~ticmammary gland shedders of Salmonella dublin without being fecal shedders of the organism. ----' ------ --- ,..,..,, - ~~~ 2 ----~ ~~~ ~ Since raw milk provides no knownnutritional advantage but does pose a significant public health hazard, the California Council Against Health Fraud, Inc., believes that the public should be warned of its danger and that misleading advertising should be stopped. California Council Against Health Fraud, Inc., Receives Public Information Grant The Dairy Council of California, a non-profit association administered by the California De partment of Food and _Agricu-lture,has provided CCAHFwith funds to carry on a ·public educa tion program through news releases. A free-lance public relations agency has been engaged to issue one news release per month for one year. The only stipulation is that half of these deal with nutrition in someway. This is no problem since food quackery is the numberone area of abuse. Even though the 71 year old biochemist had 3 coronary bypass operations and was taking 3 prescription medications, he still had to take sublingual nitro to suppress his angina pain when walking and working in the yard. Dr. Pauling suggested the nutritional protocol developed by him and Dr. Matthias Rath (MD) at the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine: a combination of specific vitamins, minerals and amino acids taken in precise doses twice a day. The biochemist started the protocol in April. By mid-June he could walk and do yard work without angina pain. By late August he cut up a tree with a chain saw. And in early September he painted his house. He also cut the doses of his heart medications in half. He writes: “I attribute my newfound wellbeing to Dr. Pauling’s nutritional protocol. The effect of the therapy borders on the miraculous.” Reference: Case Report: Amelioration of Angina Pectoris, Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine, Vol. 6, Pgs. 144-146, 1991. Dr. Linus Pauling is the only person ever to have been awarded 2 unshared Nobel Prizes.

  • Questionable Organizations: an Overview
Questionable Organizations: An Overview http://www.quackwatch.com/04ConsumerEducation/nonrecorg.html Search Home Your Guide to Quackery, Health Fraud, and Intelligent Decisions Send This Page to a Friend Stephen Barrett, M.D. Promoters of questionable health practices often form organizations to multiply their effectiveness. How can one tell which groups are reliable and which are not? There is no sure way, but nine precautionary questions may help: 1. Are its ideas inside the scientific mainstream? Some groups admit that they were formed because their founders felt alienated from the scientific community. One group that made no secret of this was actually called the American Quack Association, whose main purposes were to provide emotional support to its members, poke fun at their critics, and stimulate positive public feelings toward unconventional practitioners. The group was founded in 1985 by Jonathan Wright, M.D., who became its president, and Roy Kupsinel, M.D., a "holistic" practitioner from Florida, who became its vice-president. It attracted about 300 members but no longer appears active. 2. Who are its leaders and advisors? The International Society for Fluoride Research may sound respectable, but it is actually an antifluoridation group. The International Academy of Preventive Medicine (now called the International Academy of Nutrition and Preventive Medicine) numbered among its leaders Carlton Fredericks, Linus Pauling, Lendon Smith, and other promoters of questionable nutrition practices. The Health Resources Council was founded by Gary Null to promote "alternative" health methods. 3. What are its membership requirements? Is scientific expertise required—or just a willingness to pay dues? An organization open to almost anyone may be perfectly respectable (like the American Association for the Advancement of Science), but don't let the fact that an individual belongs to it impress you.
