National and subnational data published between 2005 and 2015 were searched via Medline, Scopus and national public health websites. Per micronutrient, relevant data were pooled into an average prevalence of deficiency, weighted by sample size (WAVG). Inadequate intakes were estimated from mean (SD) intakes. This review included 65 surveys and studies from Ethiopia (21), Kenya (11), Nigeria (21) and South Africa (12). -

Description Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), also called non-traditional medicine, is a group of diverse medical and healthcare systems, practices and products that are not typically considered to be a part of traditional Western medicine (i.e., conventional medicine). This policy addresses services performed by CAM providers such as naturopaths, chiropractors and acupuncturists. Complementary medicine generally refers to using a non-traditional approach together with conventional medicine. Alternative medicine refers to using a non-traditional approach in place of conventional medicine. Various CAM assessments and therapies are supported by some degree of scientific evidence and are intended to reduce disease-based symptoms and to improve health outcomes. However, due to a lack of well-designed scientific studies and/or peer reviewed literature many CAM therapies have not been shown to improve health outcomes over conventional therapies. II. Criteria/Guidelines A CAM service or procedure is covered (subject to Limitations and Administrative Guidelines) when all of the following criteria are met: A. It meets the definition of medical necessity as specified in Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS) Section 432: 1. It is for the purpose of treating a medical condition. 2. It is the most appropriate delivery or level of service, considering potential benefits and harms to the patient; 3. It is known to be effective in improving health outcomes; provided that: a. Abstract: Iodine deficiency is a global issue and affects around 2 billion people worldwide, with preg- nant women as a high-risk group. Iodine-deficiency prevention began in the 20th century and started with global salt iodination programmes, which aimed to improve the iodine intake status globally. Although it resulted in the effective eradication of the endemic goitre, it seems that salt iodination did not resolve all the issues. Currently, it is recommended to limit the consumption of salt, which is the main source of iodine, as a preventive measure of non-communicable diseases, such as hypertension or cancer the prevalence of which is increasing. -

Riley Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Associate Professor Andrew Hoofnagle, MD, PhD Vitamin D has long been known to maintain bone health by regulating calcium and phosphorous homeostasis. In recent years, scientists have discovered additional physiological roles for vitamin D. The complex interaction between the active vitamin D hormone and its metabolic precursors continues to be a rich area of research. Fundamental to this research is the availability of accurate and precise assays. Few published assays for vitamins D2 and D3 have contained sufficient details on method validation or performance characteristics. The liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) assay developed for this thesis has undergone a rigorous validation and proven to yield a sensitive and specific method that exceeds the capabilities of all previously published methods. Developing and validating a novel assay is often complicated by the lack of established acceptability standards. This thesis explores this challenge, specifically for establishing meaningful interpretations and qualification standards of the lower limit of the measuring interval. Altogether, future research focused on vitamins D2, D3 and the Vitamin D pathway can benefit from this robust LC-MS/MS assay and the associated quality parameters outlined in this thesis. -

Abstract Objective: Coronary artery diseases including atherosclerosis is considered as commonest problem worldwide. Ergosterols are the main components of vegetable oils and nuts. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential hypoplipidemic and hypocholesterolemic effects of ergosterol in combination with niacin in rats fed high fat diet (HFD). Methods: Eighty male albino rats were included in this study divided into two main groups: Group I: Normal rats fed stand- ard diet treated with either niacin (8.5 mg /kg b.w) or ergosterol (100 mg/Kg b.w) or both. Group II; rats fed HFD treated with either niacin (8.5 mg /kg b.w) or ergosterol (100 mg/Kg b.w) or both The feeding and treatment lasted for 8 weeks. Results: A significant elevation in the levels of total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, VLDL-c, LDL-c and atherogenic factor (p<0.001) in rats fed on HFD compared with normal control while HDL-c was significantly reduced in HFD rats compared with control group. -

Objective: The objective is to investigate the information-seeking behavior of health professionals seeking CAM information. Methods: Data were gathered using a Web-based questionnaire made available to health sciences faculty af®liated with the University of California, San Francisco. Results: The areas of greatest interest were herbal medicine (67%), relaxation exercises (53%), and acupuncture (52%). About half the respondents perceived their CAM searches as being only partially successful. Eighty-two percent rated MEDLINE as a useful resource, 46% personal contacts with colleagues, 46% the Web, 40% journals, and 20% textbooks. Books and databases most frequently cited as useful had information about herbs. The largest group of respondents was in internal medicine (26%), though 15% identi®ed their specialties as psychiatry, psychology, behavioral medicine, or addiction medicine. There was no correlation between specialty and patterns of information- seeking behavior. Sixty-six percent expressed an interest in learning more about CAM resources. Conclusions: Health professionals are frequently unable to locate the CAM information they need, and the majority have little knowledge of existing CAM resources, relying instead on MEDLINE. -
Guidelines on Food Fortification with Micronutrients
GUIDELINES ON FOOD FORTIFICATION FORTIFICATION FOOD ON GUIDELINES Interest in micronutrient malnutrition has increased greatly over the last few MICRONUTRIENTS WITH years. One of the main reasons is the realization that micronutrient malnutrition contributes substantially to the global burden of disease. Furthermore, although micronutrient malnutrition is more frequent and severe in the developing world and among disadvantaged populations, it also represents a public health problem in some industrialized countries. Measures to correct micronutrient deficiencies aim at ensuring consumption of a balanced diet that is adequate in every nutrient. Unfortunately, this is far from being achieved everywhere since it requires universal access to adequate food and appropriate dietary habits. Food fortification has the dual advantage of being able to deliver nutrients to large segments of the population without requiring radical changes in food consumption patterns. Drawing on several recent high quality publications and programme experience on the subject, information on food fortification has been critically analysed and then translated into scientifically sound guidelines for application in the field. The main purpose of these guidelines is to assist countries in the design and implementation of appropriate food fortification programmes. They are intended to be a resource for governments and agencies that are currently implementing or considering food fortification, and a source of information for scientists, technologists and the food industry. The guidelines are written from a nutrition and public health perspective, to provide practical guidance on how food fortification should be implemented, monitored and evaluated. They are primarily intended for nutrition-related public health programme managers, but should also be useful to all those working to control micronutrient malnutrition, including the food industry. -
