Broadcast messages Jed Stone, Frillby United: «Following Foxwood’s defeat by Saturday Morning, the sports headline of the Foxlayton Herald read:- ‘Foxwood fail again! Curse returns!’ In his book ‘History of Three Divisions’, Jack Lidgute, Football Historian, has the following to say about the ‘Foxwood Curse’. In the middle of Barkers Field just outside Foxlayton stood an old oak tree. In 1845 it was struck by lightning and split in two. Unfortunately the 15th Earl of Foxwood was sheltering under it at the time and was killed when a branch from the rendered tree fell on his head. His death at the age of 35 had two effects. His football mad son, Ernest, became 16th Earl and his wife, Gladys, went mad with grief and spent the next ten years in a Victorian loony bin. With the formation of the National League in the late 1860’s Earl Ernest formed ‘Foxwood’ with players from his estate, joined the League and transformed Barkers Field into the team’s Home ground. His mother, now living at the ancestral home and still batty as a box of badgers, was terribly upset about Barker’s Field. She appeared at the first home match dressed as a witch and began cursing the assembled multitude for playing football on her husband’s grave. (The Earl was in fact buried in the churchyard on the other side of the village but she wasn’t going to allow such a small fact spoil a good curse.) She reappeared at every home match and continued to curse Foxwood into an endless string of defeats. On her deathbed she cursed them to ‘fail forever’, which they have done magnificently. In their long history Foxwood have never won a title of any type and generally fail to string together a solid series of wins. Of course everyone knows that it’s all really down to bad management and poor player tactics. Curses are a load of rubbish….unless, of course, they do work!!!» 3. Apprentices discovered None. 4.
