Comin’ Home Baby Tributo a Herbie Mann Geoff Warren Quartet Geoff Warren – Flauti Raffaele Pallozzi – Tastiere Marco Di Marzio – Basso Bruno Marcozzi – Batteria e percussioni Herbie Mann – Flautista Jazz e Pioniere della World Music.

Late Night Jazz – 1968 Samstag, 17. The sight of an excited crowd rising to its feet, the dedication and professionalism of the band leaders, the apprecia tion expressed by musicians who have come many miles to play be fore the CJF audience - all of these things, which happen in the span of a few short hours, make the work that goes before seem in significant. This is CJF's thirteenth year. We are the oldest, and, we think, the best college jazz festival in the country. Funding for the Smithsonian Jazz Oral History Program NEA Jazz Master interview was provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. HUBERT LAWS NEA JAZZ MASTER (2011) Interviewee: Hubert Laws (November 10, 1939 - ) Interviewer: Anthony Brown with recording engineer Ken Kimery Date: March 4-5, 2011 Repository: Archives Center, National Museum of American History Description: Transcript, 134 pp. Brown: Today is March 4th, 2011. This is the Smithsonian NEA Jazz Masters oral history interview with Hubert Laws in his home in Los Angeles, California, conducted by Anthony Brown and Ken Kimery. Good afternoon, Hubert. How are you doing? Laws: I’m fine, man. Brown: The last time I saw you was at the NEA Jazz Masters awards in January. You provided the first musical number, a duet with Kenny Barron, playing Stella by Starlight. I have to say, that was the high point of the evening. It could have stopped after that. That was, oh, incredible. Laws: It’s kind of you to say that, because I felt very good about that collaboration with Kenny. It’s so interesting, because we were supposed to have had a rehearsal that morning. We met in this little room on the side and we ended up – I said, “You know what? Let’s do – let’s just play for a while, and then we’ll lead on into Stella.” I said, “We may do that, or I may do another tune.” He said okay. That’s what I love about professional guys like him. They’re so flexible. We didn’t know what we were going to play in the beginning.

Biographical Description for The HistoryMakers® Video Oral History with Roy Ayers PERSON Ayers, Roy Alternative Names: Roy Ayers; Life Dates: September 10, 1940- Place of Birth: Los Angeles, California, USA Residence: New York, NY Work: New York, NY Occupations: Vibraphonist; Jazz Composer Biographical Note Jazz composer and vibraphonist Roy Ayers was born on September 10, 1940 in Los Angeles, California to Ruby Ayers and Roy Ayers, Sr. Ayers’ mother, a schoolteacher and piano instructor, began teaching him music when he was only a toddler. Growing up near Central Avenue, the heart of the West Coast jazz scene, Ayers was exposed to local luminaries from an early age. At five years old, Ayers was given his first set of vibraphone mallets by bandleader Lionel Hampton. Ayers attended Thomas Jefferson High School, where many of his classmates also went on to become famous jazz and R&B artists. Ayers first played steel guitar and piano and did not study the vibraphone until meeting vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson at age seventeen. At twenty-two, Ayers began his prolific recording career as a sideman for jazz saxophonist Curtis Amy. In 1963, Ayers released his first album, West Coast Vibes, and went on to record with the Jack Wilson Quartet, Chico Hamilton, and the Gerald Wilson Orchestra in the 1960s, before joining up with jazz flutist Herbie Mann at The Lighthouse club in Hermosa Beach, California. Mann produced three of Ayers’ albums for Atlantic Records, and Ayers was a principal soloist on Mann’s hit album Memphis Underground. In 1970, Ayers moved to Manhattan and formed Roy Ayers Ubiquity, marking his move into jazz fusion.

  • Memphis Rap in the 1990S
Memphis Rap in the 1990s Laura Vansickle Memphis has long been recognized for its influential role in the development of African American musical styles, most notably blues and soul. Alan Lomax, author of The Land Where the Blues Began, refers to Memphis’ Beale Street as “the home of the blues” in the South.1 Soul music originating from Memphis’ “premier soul venue, Stax,” was known for its hybrid music that blended rhythm and blues, black gospel, and white southern rock together, according to Beverly Bond and Janann Sherman in their book Memphis in Black and White.2 In fact, Memphis’ “greatest cultural legacy” is its music, which is a product of African Americans who left other places only to find poverty and divisiveness in Memphis.3 The large number of African Americans in Memphis has played an important part in the stylistic qualities of the music produced in Memphis. The most recent major manifestation of African American music is rap, and Memphis has created its own style of rap music. Especially between the years 1993 and 1997, Memphis rap developed characteristics that differentiate it from the rap of other cities. Memphis rap incorporated the trends seen nationally in rap musical styles and textual themes while still maintaining its distinctive Memphis style. Like the main factor that shaped Memphis blues and soul, Memphis rap in the 1990s exhibited distinctive characteristics because of the African American presence and experience in Memphis. Memphis rap has been nationally recognized since the 1990s and the rap industry 1 Alan Lomax, The Land Where the Blues Began (New York: Pantheon Books, 1993), 4.
