Die musikalischen Helden des Jahres 1968 waren nicht Jazzer, sondern Rocker: Jimmy Hendrix, die Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin. Die Jazzmusiker waren etwas verloren zwischen Widerstand und Anpassung, einerseits spielten sie trotzig wie sie immer gespielt hatten, andererseits suchten sie die Nähe zu den neuen Sounds. Das ergab musikalisch einen überaus farbigen Jahrgang - zwischen New Thing und Popjazz, zwischen Tradition und Aufbruch.
