MSU, because of its size and central location, was a logical choice for a new medical school. But the idea of starting a new medical school, as opposed to expanding existing programs at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University, also had many opponents, particularly at the University of Michigan. Nevertheless, the Institute of Biology and Medicine was founded in 1961 to coordinate existing programs - Page 3- College of Human Medicine Records UA.15.13 in various sciences, the Veterinary School and the anticipated programs in Human Medicine. The college was officially formed in 1964 and Andrew H. Hunt of Stanford University was named dean. The college's first class was admitted in 1966 to a two-year pre-clinical program. Students were to complete their medical training at other medical schools. In 1970 the college was granted permission to become a full four-year program. In 1977 Donald Weston was named dean. During his administration, the state of Michigan was undergoing a severe recession and the college had to respond to the decreased budgets available. In 1989, Weston resigned and William S. Abbett was named the acting dean. He was appointed dean in 1990 and continued until 2000 when he resigned to pursue other interests at the university. Christopher Colenda was named acting dean until Glenn Davis was appointed dean in 2001. Davis resigned in 2005 to pursue other opportunities and Marsha Rappley was named acting dean in and then appointed dean in 2006 where she continues at this time. The College of Human Medicine was founded with the idea that a medical school could be started relatively cheaply by using basic science programs already in place at a large university like MSU and by using community hospitals for clinical experience, rather than building a teaching hospital. In its founding philosophy, the college is very much a product of the progressive, humanistic ideals of the 1960s, and its first dean, Andrew Hunt. Hunt believed in a closer link between behavioral sciences, medical sciences, and community service responsibilities of the medical profession. To this end there was an emphasis on recruiting women and minorities, and programs were instituted to return physicians to smaller Michigan communities. ^ Return to Table of Contents Series Description OFFICE OF THE DEAN.
