Energy Efficient Modernization of Municipal Lighting System of Yerevan City Yerevan Municipality Ministry of Nature Protection of RA Energy Efficient Modernization of Municipal Lighting System of Yerevan city The overreaching aim of the “Green Urban Lighting” UNDP-GEF project is to save energy and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by increasing energy efficiency of municipal lighting systems in the cities of Armenia and to demonstrate advantages of new light emitting diodes (LED) technologies via implementation of municipal investment programs and national policies. Results of the street lighting modernization projects 63% – decreased energy consumption 115 300 USD – annual savings from reduced energy consumption and maintenance costs 587 tCO2 – annual reduction of greenhouse gas emissions 19.31 km – length of streets with improved illumination 1,325 – number of LED luminaires installed 162 – number of decorative LED luminaries installed in the Yerevan Zoo 681,500 USD – total investments, of which grants provided by UNDP is 323,300 USD, 195,200 USD are from the savings accumulated in Yerevan city revolving fund, 153,100 USD are from Yerevan Illumination Company for lighting pole and fixture installation activities. 1st Phase: Isakov Avenue, Tairov Street from Victory Bridge to intersection of Zvartnots Airport, 2015 The demonstration project is implemented in the frames of Statement of Intent signed between UNDP in Armenia and Yerevan municipality in August 2014. Length of streets: 4 km Funding: Revolving Fund of Yerevan municipality: 100% Before: After: Indicators of lighting system High Pressure LED Benefits Sodium fixtures fixtures Quantity of fixtures 508 250 Decreased: 258 Average luminance level, lx (norm: 20) 16 26 Increased: 8 Total installed capacity, kW 144.8 53.25 Decreased: 91.53 Annual electricity consumption, MWh 490.9 180.6 Energy saving: 310.36 Annual GHG emissions, tCO2 218.0 80.2 Reduction: 137.8 Annual operation and maintenance costs, USD 36 753.8 13 518.0 Savings: 23 235.8 Main benefits of pilot project implementation Installed capacity and energy consumption decreased by 63% in the street lighting system; Annual greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by about 137.8 tCO2. Other advantages Level and uniformity of illumination were brought into compliance with the effective norms thus ensuring higher road safety; Transparent system of monitoring of higher energy savings and illumination, and lower greenhouse gas emissions; Rationale of a proper incorporation of energy savings in the lighting system into the town’s energy action plan of 2016; The accumulation of the cost savings in the energy efficiency revolving fund of the Yerevan municipality enables municipality to invest in improvement of energy performance of the lighting systems on continuous basis. 4 “Green Urban Lighting” UNDP-GEF/00074869 project .

    Levant Sparrowhawk Accipiter brevipes breeding populations in Yerevan and the Meghri region, Armenia VASIL ANANIAN, KAREN AGHABABYAN, SIRANUSH TUMANYAN, GRIGOR JANOIAN & KEITH BILDSTEIN The Levant Sparrowhawk Accipiter brevipes was first recognized as a breeding species in Armenia in the 1920s and has been reported as a breeder in the northeastern and southern parts of the country (Lyaister & Sosnin 1942, Dahl 1954, Adamian & Klem 1999). The species is included in the Armenian Red Data Book where it is classified as ‘rare and apparently declining’ (Movsesyan & Ayrumyan 1987). Until recently, information on Levant Sparrowhawks was collected opportunistically and was limited to field records of individuals seen and occasional nesting events (Lyaister & Sosnin 1942, Dahl 1953, Dahl 1954, Adamian & Klem 1999). During 1996–2001 nests and territorial pairs were recorded in the Meghri region of southernmost Armenia (Aghababyan 2001). In 2008 we resumed studies in this area and have expanded our studies to include the capital city of Yerevan and some villages on the slopes of mount Aragats (Figure 1). Our principal objective was to assess the current status of the bird as a breeding species (Plate 1). Figure 1.
