McCarthy iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS While the production of a dissertation is commonly idealized as a solitary act of scholarly virtuosity, the reality might be better expressed with slight emendation to the oft- quoted proverb, “it takes a village to write a dissertation.” This particular dissertation at least exists only in light of the significant support I have received over the years. To my dissertation committee Ann Taves, Kathleen Moore and, especially, advisor Juan Campo, I extend my thanks for their productive advice and critique along the way. They are the most prominent among many faculty members who have encouraged my scholarly development. I am also indebted to the Council on Information and Library Research of the Andrew C. Mellon Foundation, which funded the bulk of my archival research – without their support this project would not have been possible. Likewise, I am grateful to the numerous librarians and archivists who guided me through their collections – in particular, UCSB’s retired Middle East librarian Meryle Gaston, and the Near East School of Theology in Beriut’s former librarian Christine Linder.

The Guide is available on-line as an e-document, at: www. Homenetmen.net The Homenetmen Leader’s Guide was Developed on the Occasion of the 100th Anniversary of HOMENETMEN As a Tribute to its Remarkable Contribution to Armenian Society, In the Hopes of Educating Future Generations of Leaders to Carry on the Torch. SY 2 PREFACE Homenetmen has bylaws, rules and regulations, but no formal leadership development program. Governing bodies also do not have a comprehensive orientation guide for new board members. Hence this guidebook. This Guide is primarily written for the leadership of Western USA Region. However, the entire Homenetmen family with all of its Regions and Chapters could use this guidebook, with minor adjustments of region specific information. WHY Do We Need to HAVE a GUIDE for LEADERS? Every nonprofit organization needs a board development process. Homenetmen has to give tools to those leaders who are expected to lead our youth, to better explain to them their role and responsibilities, educate them about their position and functions and help improve their performance. Quality leaders are better mentors. This Guide may be utilized for two purposes: 1. As a reference handbook, adopted by any Homenetmen leader, or 2.

  • Archives This Page Lists the Approximately 1,900 Archival Items
Archives This page lists the approximately 1,900 archival items that are held by the N.E.S.T. Special Collections. The majority of these items are from the Syria Mission of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM), and later of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. (PCUSA), as well as affiliated institutions, such as the American Mission Press, the Chouir Conference Center, the Gerard Institution, the Anglo-American Church and N.E.S.T. itself. Items range from personal diaries of missionaries, correspondences, institutional records, brochures, school yearbooks, newspapers, pamphlets and stamps. Photographs and maps are listed in separate indexes due to their size, location in the Special Collection Room and descriptive details. The archives of the Syria Mission were originally organized by missionary James Willoughby in 1966, the index of which is archival item 432. Willoughby's arrangement was not preserved during the transference of the N.E.S.T. library to its location on Ras Beirut in 1974. As such, in 2012 a project was initiated under the title Preserving Protestant Heritage in the Middle East (PPHME) with the aim of reorganizing N.E.S.T.’s Special Collections. During the first phase of the PPHME the archival items were indexed according to the order that they were found. As a result, only some items are grouped according to affiliated organization. Part of the next phase of the PPHME project is to organize the archival material into subject areas. As such, each archival item is given a temporary inventory number (as opposed to a more permanent shelf mark).

In spite of the fact that more pragmatic revolutionaries attempted to convince the Armenian community that the Balkan model would not work for the Armenians because of demographic and geopolitical differences, the Armenian struggle for inde- pendence from the Ottoman Empire was waged in a way that was similar to the Balkan model. There is strong reason to believe that if the Armenians had had stron- ger British and Russian backing and constituted a slightly higher percentage of the population in the region of Eastern Anatolia that an independent Armenia would have emerged in Eastern Anatolia and Cilicia much in the same manner that an independent Bulgaria, Serbia, and Montenegro emerged in the Balkans.

Beginning on April 24, 1915, with the arrest of Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Constantinople by Ottoman au- thorities, one and a half million Armenians were deported, massacred, or marched to their deaths in a campaign of ex- termination. We honor the victims of the Meds Yeghern so that the horrors of what happened are never lost to history.
