PTA Happenings

Cayman Islands Marathon & Kids Fun Run

Thank you to the staff and families who supported the CIS International Waters Water Stop on Sunday, De- cember 5th! Our PTA booth didn’t win any awards, but they showed outstanding CIS school spirit and helped to cheer on many runners. Both Ms. Yvonne and Ms. Nimmi were sighted in the wee morning hours!

CIS had many participants in activities related to the marathon, with great efforts made by CIS teachers and staff. Ms. Megan’s first place finish in the half marathon for the Women’s Under 29 age group (out of 51) was particularly noteworthy! She came in 3rd overall for women of all ages (out of 256), and 24th place for both men and women (out of 420 runners) for the half marathon. Way to go Ms. Megan! Ms. Katie K. and Sarah all ran the half marathon as well. Ms. Krista and Ms. Corey ran in a team effort with two other women.

Leading the student effort was standout runner Tristan VK (Grade 11). Tristan was part of a four man relay team in the full Cayman Islands Marathon. He was the youngest member of his team, Hy Tech Tigers, which came in first and established a new course record in the relay team category. Tristan’s commendable perform- ance is even more remarkable when his other accomplishments and responsibilities are considered: he main- tained gold honor role grades, participated in rehearsals and play performances the week before the marathon, handled his regular homework commitments, prepared for the CIS Soccer Team trip to Jamaican and trained with the Cayman Islands National Team and their middle-distance running coaches. What a great all-around student athlete! In addition to numerous CIS parents who participated in marathon events, the following children were sighted at the finish line: Bianca A., Katarina K., Augustina T., Valentina T., Martina T., Jaxon S., Ben S., Matt S., Connor H., Reese H., Nuala P., Ava H., Parker S., Pierre S., Kyler D., Isabella W. and & Sofia W.

Caykids 2011 Triathlon

The annual Caykids Triathlon is a program of the Cayman Islands Triathlon Association (CITA). Caykids is a non-competitive introduction to triathlons for the children of the Cayman Islands. Our goal is to promote physical fitness, healthy lifestyles, and community involvement. A triathlon is a race made up of three prominent sports in the Cayman Islands: swimming, cycling, and running.

With its growing popularity, the Caykids Triathlon is proud to have had over 150 participants ranging from 6 to 14 years of age over the past few years. This year, Caykids is moving to a new location and date, January 23rd, 2011 @ Camana Bay Sports Facility. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Camana Bay for donating the use of the sports facility for this event.

Students may enter as an individual or be part of a team of two or three members. To ensure the safety of all participants, the race will start in three different waves.

The swim will take place in the 25 m pool, the bike will be a circular course around the perimeter of Cayman International School, and the race will conclude with the run around the football pitch. Parents, siblings, teachers, and friends are welcome to come out to cheer on the aspiring athletes.

Immediately following the race, the participants will celebrate with a pizza party and the ever popular random prize giveaways. Many local companies such as Uncle Bill’s, Cox Lumber, Sports Supply, Books & Books, Dairy Queen, Baskin Robbins, TCBY, Cost-U-Less, Hollywood Theaters, and Burger King have been generous in their donations.

Traditionally, the Caykids Triathlon has taken place in December. It was in the spirit of the holiday season that “Caykids Care” was developed. Participants were encouraged to bring a gift or food item to donate to families in need. This year the athletes will have an opportunity to give back to our community by making a charitable donation to the Cayman Islands Cancer Society. CICS will be hosting their annual Stride Against Cancer the following weekend.

We look forward to seeing everyone at this event.

Sincerely, Jody Danter & Darcy Simcoe Race Directors
