The Master Class

Gain a unique insight into modern and contemporary Indian art over an intensive two-day course. Sessions led by experts including Girish Shahane, Gayatri Sinha, Dr. Naman Ahuja, Roobina Karode, Dinesh Vazirani and Peter Nagy.

Each module has been devised with the following audiences in mind:

 Existing collectors without formal art training who are seeking a deeper understanding of Indian art  Young collectors who want to start or grow their collection based on a solid foundation  Aspiring entrants into the art trade  Anyone with an interest in Indian culture seeking to grow their knowledge

Each of the sessions will be well illustrated and followed by a question & answer session.

Day 1

9.30 am – 5.30 pm, 7 sessions

1. Classical and Modern, Dr. Naman Ahuja A perspective on the influences of the Classical Arts on the Modern Art practices in India. 2. Understanding Modern Art , Roobina Karode What does the term Modern Art mean? How can it be defined? Which are the Modern Artists? Two sessions that will unravel it all.

Speakers Profile

Dr. Naman P. Ahuja is an Associate Professor of Ancient Indian Art and Architecture at Jawaharlal Nehru University, . In 2011 he completed a Nehru Fellowship, authoring the book The Making of the Modern Indian Craftsman: Devi Prasad. He has held Fellowships, Visiting Professorships and Curatorial charges at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, SOAS, the British Museum and the Kusnthistorisches Institut in Florence.

Girish Shahane has degrees in English literature from Elphinstone College, Bombay University, and attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He was editor and later consulting editor of Art India magazine. He has written on visual art, film and cultural politics for leading publications, and contributed columns to Time Out and Yahoo! India. He has lectured at institutions like the NGMA and NCPA in Mumbai, the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad, the in London, and the Art Institute of Chicago, and is the Art Director for Skoda Prize for Indian Contemporary Art.

Peter Nagy moved to India in 1992 and founded the gallery Nature Morte in Delhi. Nagy represents some of the leading contemporary Indian artists such as Bharti Kher, L.N. Tallur, Anita Dube, Subodh Gupta and Dayanita Singh.

Gayatri Sinha is an art critic and independent curator. She read English literature and Economics at Calcutta University with a post graduation in Media Studies Social Psychology and Critical Appreciation, Bombay. As an art critic and columnist she has written for the Indian Express (1981-1991), the Telegraph (1991-1994) and the Hindu (1995-2006).

Roobina Karode is Director of the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in New Delhi, a non-profit organization for exhibiting modern and contemporary art from India and the subcontinent. An art historian, curator and critic, Karode has curated many thematic and monographic. Roobina was the co-curator of the first Asian Art Triennale in Fukuoka, Japan in She has taught Art History & Aesthetics at various institutions in Delhi, including Jamia Millia Islamia, College of Art, National Museum Institute, School of Art & Aesthetics, JNU. She was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship in 2000.
