Richardson Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA 90089, USA Legacy media coverage of the Civil Rights Movement often highlighted charismatic male leaders, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., while scores of Black women worked qui- etly in the background. Today’s leaders of the modern Black Lives Matter movement have turned this paradigm on its face. This case study explores the revamped communi- cation styles of four Black feminist organizers who led the early Black Lives Matter Movement of 2014: Brittany Ferrell, Alicia Garza, Brittany Packnett, and Marissa Johnson. Additionally, the study includes Ieshia Evans: a high-profile, independent, anti–police brutality activist. In a series of semi-structured interviews, the women shared that their keen textual and visual dismantling of Black respectability politics led to a mediated hyper-visibility that their forebearers never experienced. The women share the advantages and disadvantages of this approach, and weigh in on the sustain- ability of their communication methods for future Black social movements. Gelms As our digital environments—in their inhabitants, communities, and cultures—have evolved, harassment, unfortunately, has become the status quo on the internet (Duggan, 2014 & 2017; Jane, 2014b). Harassment is an issue that disproportionately affects women, particularly women of color (Citron, 2014; Mantilla, 2015), LGBTQIA+ women (Herring et al., 2002; Warzel, 2016), and women who engage in social justice, civil rights, and feminist discourses (Cole, 2015; Davies, 2015; Jane, 2014a). Whitney Phillips (2015) notes that it’s politically significant to pay attention to issues of online harassment because this kind of invective calls “attention to dominant cultural mores” (p. 7). Keeping our finger on the pulse of such attitudes is imperative to understand who is excluded from digital publics and how these exclusions perpetuate racism and sexism to “preserve the internet as a space free of politics and thus free of challenge to white masculine heterosexual hegemony” (Higgin, 2013, n.p.). While rhetoric and writing as a field has a long history of examining myriad exclusionary practices that occur in public discourses, we still have much work to do in understanding how online harassment, particularly that which is gendered, manifests in digital publics and to what rhetorical effect. -

CHICAGO PREMIERE by JAMES IJAMES directed by WARDELL JULIUS CLARK LOBBY EXPERIENCE SAY THEIR NAMES The 137 names on this wall represent the “List of the Fallen” a remembrance of Black people living in the United States who have been killed by police or other law enforcement officers in the past 20 years. In Kill Move Paradise, Isa reads these names from an ever-expanding list, one spit out from a printer, one name at a time, growing longer and longer over the course of the play. The people on this wall—sons and daughters, parents and grandparents, educators and scholars, athletes and artists, senior citizens and children—are by no means a complete documentation of the deaths of Black people at the hands of police officers over the course of the past two decades. In fact, according to a Washington Post-curated police-shooting database that records and analyze every fatal shooting by an on-duty police officer in the United States, in 2019 alone, at least 235 Black people lost their lives due to this type of systemic violence at the hands of the police. Rather than paint a complete picture, these names represent just a small sampling of the loss of Black life, meant to remind us of the vastness of this epidemic. The List of the Fallen was initially crafted by playwright James Ijames while writing the play, and, with his encouragement, added to by the production team during the rehearsal process in an attempt to reflect the continued violence experienced by Black bodies since the publishing of the script. -

EVANS, ASHLEY G., M.S. #AskRachel: Signifying Performances and Black Racial Authenticity on Black Twitter. (2020) Directed by Dr. Stephanie Irby Coard and Dr. Andrea G. Hunter. 55 pp. Definitions of Blackness and what are deemed as accurate portrayals of Blackness have changed over time. Connections to Blackness have been linked to biological, social, cultural, and phenotypical means that construct strict boundaries around how race functions in American society. Therefore, when racial boundaries are presumably crossed, understandings of race and how they function are questioned. Guided by symbolic interactionism, this study explored racial performances and indicators of Black racial authenticity on Black Twitter, a socially discursive space. Specifically, a qualitative content analysis of tweets regarding Rachel Dolezal, whose controversial racial passing for a Black woman led to conversations about racial boundaries among African Americans through the #AskRachel hashtag, was conducted. This study explores discursive performances of Blackness and the boundaries of racial authenticity as expressed on Black Twitter. The findings indicate the emergence of popular culture, sociocultural products, socialization agents & community structures, and positive & negative appraisals were the domains. With the rise of Twitter as a common discursive space within the Black community, there is potential for it to become a more prominent socialization sphere. TWITTER AND THE #SO-CALLEDJUDGE Elizabeth Thornburg* ABSTRACT Two-hundred-eighty characters may be insufficient to deliver a treatise on the judiciary, but it is more than enough to deliver criticism of the third branch of government. Today, these tweeted critiques sometimes come not from the general public but from the President himself. Attacks such as these come at a challenging time for court systems. We live in a highly politicized, polarized society. This polarization is reflected in attitudes to- ward the courts, particularly the federal courts. Unfortunately, public doubts about the court system come at a time when public understanding of the structure of government, and especially the court system, is abys- mally low. All of this context raises a number of related questions. -

Naile Dr.Theresa Pesl Murphrey Computer-mediated environments such as social media create new social climates that impact communication interactions in un-mediated environments. This study examined social variables during conversations on Twitter through a qualitative document analysis that coded messages into affective, interactive or cohesive categories. Perceived social presence, participant satisfaction, and relationships between social presence and satisfaction among Twitter users during streaming conversations were examined through an online questionnaire that was created using qualtrics.com and made available to respondents over a one-week period. The researcher concluded that most social variables in the Twitter conversations of this study fall into the interactive social presence category. -

I argue the ways in which intersectionality can support analyses in the local uprisings for the Black Lives Matter movement in Philadelphia.Some uprisings, focused on anti-Black state violence linkages to schools and approaches to education. Toward this goal, this article explores how as a normative theory and analytical approach, intersectionality can strengthen aims for LGBTQ rights and educational equity. ALL Black Lives Matters These were the words written across some of the signs at the Educators and Students March for Black Lives and the Youth March for Black Lives during recent uprisings in Philadelphia. Activists marched in the streets with signs and yelled chants like “No justice! No peace! No racist police!” Despite 98-degree weather and having to wear masks for COVID-19 precaution, activists continued their chants and marched on toward City Hall and the administrative offices of the School District of Philadelphia (SDP). The speeches given by school staff, parents, and students focused on their experiences within schooling systems—concerns about public health, safety, building conditions, policing—and a host of demands that organizers would like to see applied across the SDP. -

Summary of Sexual Abuse Claims in Chapter 11 Cases of Boy Scouts of America There are approximately 101,135sexual abuse claims filed. Of those claims, the Tort Claimants’ Committee estimates that there are approximately 83,807 unique claims if the amended and superseded and multiple claims filed on account of the same survivor are removed. The summary of sexual abuse claims below uses the set of 83,807 of claim for purposes of claims summary below.1 The Tort Claimants’ Committee has broken down the sexual abuse claims in various categories for the purpose of disclosing where and when the sexual abuse claims arose and the identity of certain of the parties that are implicated in the alleged sexual abuse. Attached hereto as Exhibit 1 is a chart that shows the sexual abuse claims broken down by the year in which they first arose. Please note that there approximately 10,500 claims did not provide a date for when the sexual abuse occurred. As a result, those claims have not been assigned a year in which the abuse first arose. Attached hereto as Exhibit 2 is a chart that shows the claims broken down by the state or jurisdiction in which they arose. Please note there are approximately 7,186 claims that did not provide a location of abuse. Those claims are reflected by YY or ZZ in the codes used to identify the applicable state or jurisdiction. Those claims have not been assigned a state or other jurisdiction. Attached hereto as Exhibit 3 is a chart that shows the claims broken down by the Local Council implicated in the sexual abuse. -

To address this negative phenomenon scientists struggled to understand and analyze its roots and language expressions described as hate speech. As a result, it is now possible to automatically detect and counter hate speech in textual data spreading rapidly, for example, in social media. However, recently another approach to tackling the roots of disrespect was proposed, it is based on the concept of promoting positive behavior instead of only penalizing hate and disrespect. In our study, we followed this approach and discovered that it is hard to find any textual data sets or studies discussing automatic detection regarding respectful behaviors and their textual expressions. Therefore, we decided to contribute probably one of the first human-annotated data sets which allows for supervised training of text analysis methods for automatic detection of respectful messages. By choosing a data set of tweets which already possessed sentiment annotations we were also able to discuss the correlation of sentiment and respect. -
