Sparrow Records Discography
Sparrow Discography by Mike Callahan, David Edwards & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan Sparrow Records Discography Sparrow is a Contemporary Christian label founded in 1976 by Billy Ray Hearn. Hearn was the A&R Director for Word Records’ Myrrh label, founded a few years earlier also as a Contemporary Christian label. Sparrow also released records under their Birdwing subsidiary. Hearn’s Sparrow label was in competition with Hearn’s old boss, Word Records, and was quite successful. Even today, Sparrow is among the top Christian labels. Hearn sold the label to EMI in 1992, and it was placed under the Capitol Christian Music Group. Sparrow signed a distribution agreement with MCA in April, 1981 to release their product in the secular market while the regular Sparrow issues were distributed to Christian stores and Christian radio stations. The arrangement with MCA lasted until October, 1986, when Sparrow switched distribution to Capitol. With its origins dating back to the late 1960s, CCM resembles musical styles of popular-secular culture while retaining fundamental Christian values in lyrical content. This historical perspective of CCM marketing strategies, CCM music television, CCM and secular music, arts worlds within CCM, and the science of storytelling in CCM aims to provide readers with the context and understanding of the significant role that CCM plays in modern-day evangelism. -
Visual Representations of Christianity in Christian Music Videos
Visual Representations of Christianity in Christian Music Videos ANDREAS HÄGER Åbo Akademi University Abstract This article discusses Christian rock videos. Videos from a collection entitled Wow Hits 2002: the year’s top Christian music videos are used as examples. The title of the collection declares that the videos are “Christian”, and the question asked in the article is how this quality may be seen in the videos. How may the videos be seen as visual representations of Christianity? Using a semiotic framework, two possible types of such representations of Christianity in the videos are discussed. These are references to traditional Christian imagery; and the style and appearance of the artists. This article discusses Christian rock videos as an example of the interaction between religion and popular culture. The genre of “contemporary Christian music”, or Christian rock, by being rock music as well as an expression of Christianity, stands with one foot in institutional (often evangelical) Chris tianity and the other in the secular commercial music industry. This article studies how this ambiguous position is manifested in Christian rock videos. Examples will be taken from the Christian hit video collection Wow hits 2002: the year’s top Christian music videos. © The Finnish Society for the Study of Religion Temenos Vol. 41 No. 2 (2005), 251–274 252 ANDREAS HÄGER The research context for the article is constituted by two overlapping fields of research: sociology of religion and the study of religion and popu lar culture. The view here is that these fields are connected, as the relation between religion and popular culture is understood as an example of the overarching topic of the sociology of religion: the role of religion in con temporary society. -

Christian Music Should Praise the Lord Jesus Christ — Not Man
CHRISTIAN MUSIC SHOULD PRAISE THE LORD JESUS CHRIST — NOT MAN Now, you would think this point is unnecessary for CHRISTian music. After all, CHRISTian means "a follower, believer of Jesus Christ". And if it is truly Christian music, it should testify, praise and sing about the Lord Jesus Christ. The PURPOSE of Christian music is to PRAISE the Lord. I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing PRAISE to thy name, O thou most High. Psalm 9:2 Be thou exalted, LORD, in thine own strength: so will we SING and PRAISE thy power. Psalm 21:13 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my SONG will I PRAISE him. Psalm 28:7 PRAISE the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise. Psalm 33:2-3 When someone truly gets saved, God puts a NEW song in their mouth. And that song is "PRAISE unto our God" — the result of salvation is — PRAISE. And it's not something we work up, or "fake", or just do — but it's something God "puts"! Christian music is "praise unto our God". Do you think God is a liar? 1 I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. 2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. -

A Sociological Analysis of Christian Contemporary Music and Aural Piety
“FAITH COMES BY HEARING”: A SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF CHRISTIAN CONTEMPORARY MUSIC AND AURAL PIETY __________________________________________________________________ A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board __________________________________________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Courtney Sorrell Tepera August 2017 Examining Committee Members: Lucy Bregman, Advisory Chair, TU Department of Religion Terry Rey, TU Department of Religion David Harrington Watt, TU Department of History Dustin Kidd, External Member, TU Department of Sociology © Copyright 2017 by Courtney Suzanne Sorrell Tepera ____________________________ All rights reserved iii ABSTRACT Over the past fifty years, Christian contemporary music has joined hymnody and psalmody as a major form of evangelical liturgical and devotional song. While the production and content of this genre have been explored by scholars, few studies have attended to the devotional use of the genre and its role in shaping the religious lives of American evangelicals. This project draws from several sets of data to address this matter: analysis of church-created worship music albums, listener testimonials on Christian radio websites, and focus group interviews of laity and clergy at four South Carolina churches. The data revealed that music is significant to their religious lives outside of church as a means of encountering God, managing emotions, and displaying spiritual capital. Inside churches, the music is used to create a sense of corporate identity that reinforces social bonds within the community and attracts newcomers. Drawing on the methodological framework of Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice and his work on social distinction, I argue that American evangelicals who listen to Christian contemporary music are engaged in aural piety, a set of practices, attitudes, and ideas invested in music that structure and evoke the experience of the sacred. -
