This topic fi rst appealed to me because it provides a manageable approach to the canon. The thirty-seven plays, one hundred and fi fty-four sonnets, and other poems, along with a mountain of criticism about these works can overwhelm a reader. However, the subject of gemstones offers a narrow focus that is quite manageable. Another reason why this topic appealed to me is that it provides a special insight into Shakespeare’s art. -

Their Cymbeline, directed by Mark Lamos (who later moved to opera), ended with an unforgettable scene between Imogen and her husband: “Why did you throw your wedded lady from you? Think that you are upon a rock and throw me again.” His reply, “Hang there like fruit, my soul, till the tree die.” This exchange touched me deeply and really convinced me to try some music for the songs that appear in the play as well as this beautiful expression of love. I noticed the familiar “Hark, hark the lark” was sung by the frightful Cloten. -

(USA) Online ISSN: 2249-460x & Print ISSN: 0975-587X Human Rights, Social Welfare, and Greek Philosophy Legitimate Reasons for the Invasion of Britain by Claudius By Tomoyo Takahashi University of California, United States Abstract- In 43 AD, the fourth emperor of Imperial Rome, Tiberius Claudius Drusus, organized his military and invaded Britain. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the legitimate reasons for The Invasion of Britain led by Claudius. Before the invasion, his had an unfortunate life. He was physically distorted, so no one gave him an official position. However, one day, something unimaginable happened. He found himself selected by the Praetorian Guard to be the new emperor of Roma. Many scholars generally agree Claudius was eager to overcome his physical disabilities and low expectations to secure his position as new Emperor in Rome by military success in Britain. Although his personal motivation was understandable, it was not sufficient enough for Imperial Rome to legitimize the invasion of Britain. It is important to separate personal reasons and official reasons. In the seventeenth century, the new market economic paradigm became increasingly dominant, replacing the old feudal economy. Theater functioned to “explain” this arrangement to the general populace and gradually it became part of what I call a “culture of empire” – a culture built up around the search for resources and markets that characterized imperial expansion. It also rationalized the depredations the Empire brought to those whose resources and labor were coveted by expansionists. This process intensified with the independence of the thirteen North American colonies, and theater began representing Native Americans and African American populations in ways that rationalized the dominant society’s behavior toward them. By utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, this research attempts to advance a more nuanced and realistic narrative of empire in the early modern and early republic periods. -

The formal/published version of this article appears in Inquire: Journal of Comparative Literature, Issue 2.1 (January 2012): http://inquire.streetmag.org/articles/54 Global Dialogues Issue 2.1: January 2012 A Tale of the Rise of Law: Geoffrey of Monmouth’s The History of the Kings of Britain Allen Mendenhall Geoffrey of Monmouth’s The History of the Kings of Britain is a tale of the rise of law, suggesting that there can be no Britain without law – indeed, that Britain, like all nation-state constructs, was law or at least a complex network of interrelated processes and procedures that we might call law. During an age with multiple sources of legal authority in Britain, The History treats law as sovereign unto itself in order to create a narrative of order and stability.1 This article examines the way Geoffrey establishes the primacy of law by using the language- based, utilitarian methodologies of John Austin, who treats law as an expression of a command issued by a sovereign and followed by a polis, and whose jurisprudence enables twenty-first- century readers to understand Geoffrey’s narrative as a response to monarchical succession and emerging common law. The first section of this article briefly explains Austin’s jurisprudence and provides historical context for The History. The second section considers The History in terms of uniform and rational justice in the twelfth century, situating Geoffrey’s jurisprudence alongside that of Ranulf de Glanvill and analyzing the complex relationships between sovereignty, law, polis and nation state. The Jurisprudence of John Austin Austin treats law as an expression of will that something be done or not done, coupled with the power to punish those who do not comply: “A command […] is a signification of desire […] distinguished from other significations of desire by this peculiarity: that the party to whom it is directed is liable to evil from the other, in case he not comply with the desire” (Province 6). -

The province had valuable natural resources to plunder, but the decision to invade was based upon more than its material wealth. Prestige through warfare was paramount in Roman society, and that is just what Claudius sought to achieve when he launched his invasion of the island. The Romans pushed all the way into Caledonia before stopping and securing the frontier with the construction of Hadrian’s Wall. LOWE AND THE MEMORY OF ERNST RIESS PREFACE In 1927 Professor Chambers wrote: Critical work on the manuscripts (of Geoffrey of Monmouth) is still in its infancy, and in these circumstances speculation as to the original form of the Historia and any revision which it may have undergone can only be tentative.1 Two years later, in 1929, two editions of Geoffrey appeared,2 which constitute a real advance over the older, uncritical editions. The present edition which offers the first critical text of a Variant Version of the Historia, based on manuscripts that hitherto passed under the name of Geoffrey, is only another step in this advance. It represents the first fruits of an investigation undertaken many years ago and is preliminary to a critical edition of the Historia, based on all manuscripts known to scholars, the larger portion of which (135 in actual numbers) has already been col- lated. A task of this scope could not have been undertaken without outside assistance. It was thanks to the generous grants (and publication sub- vention) from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation and the American Council of Learned Societies that it was possible to visit the various libraries of Europe and collect the material necessary for the project.
