Most of the exhibits from 1920-1959 played an important role in international diplomacy as the U.S. government attempted to influence Americans’ attitudes about Latin Americans, and vice versa, for economic and political gains. However, government interest largely waned in the 1960s and ‘70s, leaving a power vacuum that was filled by individual art collectors, who became the tastemakers of the era. This was financially unsustainable, though, and by the 1980s and ‘90s, major conglomerates began to convert their fiscal power into charitable goodwill by sponsoring crowd-pleasing blockbuster exhibitions. Yet for all these shifts, the most rapid changes in American society came after the turn of the millennia with the rise of the internet and an increase in international terrorism. As technology and social pressures have combined to make the past more accessible and desirable, there has been an increase in the number of museum exhibitions and reasons for their existence. The last two decades have seen exhibits produced on behalf of national governments, wealthy art collectors, and corporate entities, but now they tend to be more driven by scholarship and academic interests, as well. iv While this project is interested in tracking and documenting these changes over time, its focus on the relatively small number of exhibitions of Colonial Latin American art in the United States over the last hundred years serves a greater goal; the questions it asks are more philosophical. What role does the museum play in society? What happens to public opinion when trusted and authoritative institutions forward specific visions of culture and cultural production? Whose voice is really being heard and assimilated? Although I cannot offer definitive answers to these questions, this project does ultimately suggest that museums do not simply reflect popular notions about other cultures, but in fact play major roles in constructing those opinions. Even though the vast majority of the population will never see any given exhibition—let alone read every label, peruse all wall text, or study every item displayed—museums, often subtly, sometimes overtly, exert influence by drawing attention to specific cultures and histories, and by privileging particular perspectives. Too young to be a hipiteca and too old to be a punketo, I was a 22-year old interstitial rebel, a writer and artist who couldn’t find space to breathe in the suffocating official culture of Mexico. There, the art and literary cartels were structured in an ecclesiastical fashion, accountable to one untouchable capo. He was the archbishop and final arbiter of what was acceptable as “high culture” and “Mexican-ness,” Don Octavio Paz. In those days, identity in Mexico was a static construct, intricately connected to national territory and language. A Mexican was someone who lived in Mexico and who spoke Spanish like a Mexican. Punto. There weren’t many alternative ways of being Mexican. Despite the fact that we came in all shapes, colors, and even races, mestizaje (the mixed race), was the official dictum and master narrative. Whether we liked it or not, we were the bastard children of Hernan Cortez and La Malinche, product of a colonial rape and a cultural cesarean, eternally condemned to come to terms with this historical trauma. The millions of indios, the original proto-Mexicans, were portrayed as living in a parallel (and mythical) time and space outside our history and society.

    CASTELLÓN (SPAIN) CERAMICS IN PORTUGUESE ARCHITECTURE (16TH-20TH CENTURIES) A. M. Portela, F. Queiroz Art Historians - Portugal [email protected] ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to present a synoptic view of the evolution of Portuguese architectural ceramics, particularly focusing on the 19th and 20th centuries, because the origins of current uses of ceramic tiles in Portuguese architecture stem from those periods. Thus, the paper begins with the background to the use of ceramics in Portuguese architecture, between the 16th and 18th centuries, through some duly illustrated paradigmatic examples. The study then presents examples of the 19th century, in a period of transition between art and industry, demonstrating the diversity and excellence of Portuguese production, as well as the identifying character of the phenomenon of façade tiling in the Portuguese urban image. The study concludes with a section on the causes of the decline in the use of ceramic materials in Portuguese architecture in the first decades of the 20th century, and the appropriation of ceramic tiling by the popular classes in their vernacular architecture. Parallel to this, the paper shows how the most erudite route for ceramic tilings lay in author works, often in public buildings and at the service of the nationalistic propaganda of the dictatorial regime. This section also explains how an industrial upgrading occurred that led to the closing of many of the most important Portuguese industrial units of ceramic products for architecture, foreshadowing the current ceramic tiling scenario in Portugal. 1 CASTELLÓN (SPAIN) 1. Art Nouveau and Politics in the Dawn of Globalisation Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, a portuguese Art Nouveau artist Rita Nobre Peralta, Leonor da Costa Pereira Loureiro, Alice Nogueira Alves Abstract The Art Nouveau gradual appearance in the Portuguese context it’s marked by the multidimensional artist Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, and by his audacious affirmation as an avant- garde figure focused upon the industrial modernity, that is able to highlight some of the most original artistic solutions of his time. He manages to include in his production a touch of Portuguese Identity alongside with the new European trends of the late 19th century, combining traditional production techniques, themes and typologies, which are extended to artistic areas as varied as the press, the decorative arts and the decoration of cultural events. In this article, we pretend to analyse some of his proposals within Lisbon's civil architecture interior design and his participation in the Columbian Exhibition, held in Madrid in 1892, where he was a member of the Portuguese Legation, co-responsible for the selection and composition of the exhibition contents.     Graduate Journal of Visual and Material Culture Issue 5 I 2012 The Art of Conversation: Eighteenth-Century Mexican Casta Painting Mey-Yen Moriuchi ______________________________________________ Abstract: Traditionally, casta paintings have been interpreted as an isolated colonial Mexican art form and examined within the social historical moment in which they emerged. Casta paintings visually represented the miscegenation of the Spanish, Indian and Black African populations that constituted the new world and embraced a diverse terminology to demarcate the land’s mixed races. Racial mixing challenged established social and racial categories, and casta paintings sought to stabilize issues of race, gender and social status that were present in colonial Mexico. Concurrently, halfway across the world, another country’s artists were striving to find the visual vocabulary to represent its families, socio-economic class and genealogical lineage. I am referring to England and its eighteenth-century conversation pictures. Like casta paintings, English conversation pieces articulate beliefs about social and familial propriety. It is through the family unit and the presence of a child that a genealogical statement is made and an effigy is preserved for subsequent generations. Utilizing both invention and mimesis, artists of both genres emphasize costume and accessories in order to cater to particular stereotypes. I read casta paintings as conversations like their European counterparts—both internal conversations among the figures within the frame, and external ones between the figures, the artist and the beholder. It is my position that both casta paintings and conversation pieces demonstrate a similar concern with the construction of a particular self-image in the midst of societies that were apprehensive about the varying conflicting notions of socio-familial and socio-racial categories.
