New site lets you search The Enfield poltergeist was a claim of supernatural activity at Green Street, a council house in BrimsdownEnfield, London, England, This House Is Haunted and involving two sisters, aged 11 and Members of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiryincluding This House Is Haunted magicians such as Milbourne Christopher and This House Is Haunted Nickellcriticised paranormal investigators for being credulous whilst also identifying features of the case as being indicative of a hoax. The story attracted press coverage in British newspapers, and has This House Is Haunted mentioned in books, featured in television documentaries, and dramatised in a horror film. In August single parent Peggy Hodgson called police to her rented home in Enfieldclaiming she had witnessed furniture moving and that two of her four children said that knocking sounds were heard on walls. The children included Margaret, age 13, and Janet, Many also heard and recorded knocking noises and a gruff voice. Society for Psychical Research members Maurice Grosse and Guy Lyon Playfair reported "curious whistling and barking noises coming from Janet's general direction. Still, Grosse and Playfair believed that even though some of the alleged poltergeist activity was faked by the girls, other incidents were genuine. The Warrens visited the Enfield house in and were convinced that the events had a supernatural explanation. Janet was detected in trickery; a video camera in the room next door caught her bending spoons and attempting to bend an iron bar. Both Beloff and Gregory came to the conclusion that Janet and Margaret were playing tricks on the investigators. American magician Milbourne Christopher briefly investigated, failed to observe anything that could be called paranormal and was dismayed by what he felt was suspicious activity on the part of Janet. Christopher would later conclude that "the poltergeist was This House Is Haunted more than the antics of a little girl who wanted to cause trouble and who was very, very clever. Sceptic Joe Nickell examined the findings of paranormal investigators and criticised them for being overly credulous; when a supposedly disembodied demonic voice was heard, Playfair This House Is Haunted that, "as always Janet's lips hardly seemed to be moving. He argues that a photo allegedly depicting Janet levitating actually shows her bouncing off the bed as if it were a trampoline. Harris called the photos examples of common "gymnastics", and said, "It's worth remembering that Janet was a school sports champion! Nickell asserted that a tape recorder malfunction that Grosse attributed to supernatural activity and SPR president David Fontana described as an occurrence "which appeared to defy the laws of mechanics" was a peculiar threading jam capable of occurring with older model reel to reel This House Is Haunted recorders. InDeborah Hyde commented that there was This House Is Haunted solid evidence for the Enfield poltergeist: " People frequently see what they expect to see, their senses being organised and shaped by their prior experiences and beliefs. Skeptics have argued that the alleged poltergeist voice that originated from Janet was produced by false vocal cords above the larynx and had the phraseology and vocabulary of a child. During the interview both girls were asked the question "How does it feel to be haunted by a poltergeist? These factors have been regarded by sceptics as evidence against the This House Is Haunted. As "a magician experienced in the dynamics of trickery", Nickell examined Playfair's account as well as contemporary press clippings. He noted that the supposed poltergeist "tended to act only when it was not being watched" and concluded that the incidents were best explained as children's pranks. Although Grosse made tape recordings of Janet and believed no trickery was involved, the magician Bob Couttie said, "He made some of the recordings available to me and, having listened to them very carefully, I came to the conclusion that there was nothing in what I had heard that was beyond the capabilities of an imaginative teenager. The belief offers many people comfort — who doesn't want to believe that our beloved but deceased family members aren't looking out for us, or with us in our times of need? EVIDENCE FOR THE IMPOSSIBLE Stephen Bostock I remember at school someone once raising the problem of what would happen when an irresistible force meets an immoveable object. It’s a bit like that with my present Think subject. For any possibility of an afterlife for human beings has long seemed to me out of the question because of the obvious complete dependence of our minds and conscious- Autumn 2010 ness on the brain, and because our minds, like our brains, must be a product of evolution. So how could a mind or its consciousness possibly exist independently? But I’ve recently learnt of apparently undeniable evidence for the possible existence of disembodied minds or spirits. I’ll give some account of one particular case – a staggering one, as † far as I’m concerned. But suppose – just suppose – such 29 do exist. All sorts of new problems then rear up. I’ll give some examples of these too. So in the end I’m left baffled. So first, consciousness and how it must depend on the brain. It’s true that we can’t yet explain how consciousness comes about. There is still an explanatory gap, as it’s been called, between the neurophysiological events that go on in our brain and our actual conscious experiences. But that gap is narrowing, At least we now know a vast amount about various occurrences in the brain which must have a lot to do with producing the experiences that we all have, especially visual experiences, an important part of our con- sciousness. We know that contributions to our visual experiences occur in no less than thirty separate parts of the brain.
