OPPORTUNITY, CONSTRAINT, AND CAPITAL IN HOCKEY i Abstract The study explored the potential social benefits and motivations of participation in sport beyond those that pertain solely to healthy active livinG. UsinG orGanized youth ice hockey in Canada, the study also examined how cultural context can be a factor in the facilitation of such benefit, as well as the ways the game can reflect and reproduce inequalities in society more generally. A framework based on Pierre Bourdieu’s assertions on social, cultural, economic, and symbolic capital, was used to analyze data from ten semi-structured interviews with men who are former youth hockey players. The interview data revealed that throuGh hockey – as a heteronormative institution – boys and men forge rich and extensive social networks, as well as acquire the linGuistic skills, attitudes, and dispositions that help them to bond in a private and exclusive manner. Furthermore, their participation in an activity increasingly limited to the middle-to-upper class allows them to be socialized amonG this demoGraphic, thus makinG economic capital – throuGh job opportunities, for example – hiGhly extractable from their social and cultural capital. To a certain extent, participants also derived a sense of connectedness to a Canadian national identity due to their participation in an activity that proliferates in their national context. Nevertheless, the study identifies a number of opportunities and constraints that create disparities in participation, and as such, the allocation of benefits. Since these inequalities in sport may help to reproduce inequalities in society at larGe, the study closes with recommendations for policy, proGrams, and future research.     Putting it on Ice III: Constructing the Hockey Family Abstracts Carly Adams & Hart Cantelon University of Lethbridge Sustaining Community through High Performance Women’s Hockey in Warner, Alberta Canada is becoming increasingly urbanized with small rural communities subject to amalgamation or threatened by decline. Statistics Canada data indicate that by 1931, for the first time in Canadian history, more citizens (54%) lived in urban centre than rural communities. By 2006, this percentage had reached 80%. This demographic shift has serious ramifications for small rural communities struggling to survive. For Warner, a Southern Alberta agricultural- based community of approximately 380 persons, a unique strategy was adopted to imagine a sense of community and to allow its residents the choice to remain ‘in place’ (Epp and Whitson, 2006). Located 65 km south of Lethbridge, the rural village was threatened with the potential closure of the consolidated Kindergarten to Grade 12 school (ages 5-17). In an attempt to save the school and by extension the town, the Warner School and the Horizon School Division devised and implemented the Warner Hockey School program to attract new students to the school and the community. By 2003, the Warner vision of an imagined community (Anderson, 1983) came to include images of high performance female hockey, with its players as visible celebrities at the rink, school, and on main street. The purpose of this paper is to explore the social conditions in rural Alberta that led to and influenced the community of Warner to take action to ensure the survival of their local school and town.

Over the past few years personal digital health- monitoring technologies have proliferated, with those that track fitness and physical activity – devices like Fitbit or Jawbone, or apps like Map My Fitness and Apple Health – among the most popular. Sociologists writing on the quantified self movement and on health-tracking apps and devices (Sherman 2015; Lupton 2012, 2013) have suggested that the new technologies are contributing to new forms of subjectivity and embodiment. Scholars have argued, for instance, that the apps and devices lead people to develop an intense focus on the body, that they subject users to continual and intimate surveillance, and that they strip meaning and complexity from daily life as they quantify activities and bodily functions.
