    GRAPE DISEASE CONTROL, 2018 Bryan Hed, Department of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology, Penn State University, Lake Erie Regional Grape Research and Extension Center, North East PA 16428 ([email protected]) As many of you know Wayne Wilcox, who has annually provided us with an incredibly thorough grape disease management update each spring, has retired. Filling Wayne's shoes is going to be a tall task to say the least, and the search for his replacement goes on. For now, I will attempt to provide a brief summary of some of the pertinent changes in grape disease control that I hope will be useful for grape growers in the 2018 season. For consistency, I'll roughly be using Wayne's format from his previous newsletter from June of 2017. FUNGICIDE CHANGES, NEWS, & REVIEWS Here is some new, and sort of new information regarding grape fungicides in 2018. First, Aprovia/Aprovia Top. The active ingredient in Aprovia is solatenol (benzovindiflupyr), and while it does not represent a new chemical class for us grape growers (succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor or SDHI) it is one of those 'new generation' SDHIs that Wayne spoke of last year. The SDHI fungicides belong to FRAC Group 7, which also includes chemistries in products like Endura and Pristine (boscalid) and Luna Experience (fluopyram). Aprovia was available for use in most states last year, but has now been labeled for use in New York as well. As a solo product, Aprovia is very effective for the control of powdery mildew as trials in NY over several years have shown.

We also joined with a number of our other colleagues from this event to hold a trade tasting at The Bentley Bar and Restaurant on the Monday following Mental Notes. We are now gearing up for the other two major events on the natural wine calendar – Rootstock in Sydney and Soul For Wine in Melbourne. We are delighted that both Tony and Philippe Bornard will be attending Rootstock this year. To celebrate their visit we will be holding two very special events. The first will be a late lunch in Hobart at Franklin Restaurant and the second will be a dinner at the wonderful Bar Brosé in Sydney which will be cooked by Analeise Gregory as described below. And now to the special packs. We have a rather long story on the Côte de Beaune and a 6 pack of wines selected from that region of Burgundy. We have a special dozen comprised of wines that include very rare grape varieties that we like to seek out from the hidden corners of France. There is a pack of wines from our winemaker of the month, namely Domaine les Grandes Vignes from the Loire Valley.

    HAVE SOME MADERA, M’DEAR Story and photos by John Blanchette Quiet lanes flow through the Madera Wine Trail It was the July 4th weekend and I was headed into the Central Valley to visit Madera County and one of California’s oldest wine growing areas. The San Joaquin Valley can be blistering hot this time of year and I certainly wasn’t disappointed. Temperatures soared to 105 degrees. As my car drove on Route 99, slicing through this wide, flat and fertile plane that stretches over 200 miles between Bakersfield and Stockton, crops and livestock passed my window like an expanded grocery market. Table grapes, sugar cane, corn, tomatoes, citrus, peaches, plums, apricots, strawberries, watermelons, pistachio, pecan, Cattle range in the shadow of Giant Eucalyptus www.aiwf.org SAVOR THIS • OCTOBER 2010 15 almond, pomegranate and walnut trees, pigs, cattle, sheep, and dairy cows, etc. in abundance. One farmer told me that the topsoil is unlimited and all they need is water to grow their crops. And that’s a major problem. The current draught has caused some farmers to let their fields go fallow. The city of Madera, located 38 miles from the geographic center of California, derives its name from the Spanish word for wood, which was harvested in the Yosemite Valley foothills and shipped from Madera to build San Francisco and other area communities in the 1800s. The Madeira wine produced on the Portuguese Vineyards run to the mountains island made famous by the bawdy English tune I was off to confirm this as I explored the Madera “Have Some Madeira, m’Dear” is just a coincidence.

Castello di Casole, a boutique hotel that had only been open for three weeks, is the centrepiece of a sprawling 4,200-acre estate with a number of restored properties. Tras el paso de la plaga de la filoxera (Dactylosphaera vitifoliae) por Europa, algunas de estas variedades pueden haber desaparecido de sus lugares de origen, por lo que sólo se conservarían en el archipiélago, e incluso sólo en lugares concretos de las islas. Por otra parte, durante estos quinientos años de existencia de la viticultura en las islas inevitablemente se han producido mutaciones y cruzamientos, por lo que deben existir variedades originarias de las islas. Todo ello unido a la gran diversidad de microclimas y suelos donde se cultiva la vid conlleva que el patrimonio varietal de las islas sea de gran interés. La vocación fundamental de los cultivos de vid de las Islas Canarias ha sido y es la elaboración de vinos, siendo el cultivo de uva de mesa testimonial. En el mercado actual del vino, las variedades propias, que aportan tipicidad a los vinos están muy bien valoradas, porque contribuyen a la diferenciación del producto, por ello es importante conocer sus características productivas y su potencial enológico.

    VIVIA Cateogory Maremma Toscana DOC (controlled appellation) Vintage 2015 Blend 50% Vermentino, 40% Viognier, 10% Ansonica Climate The 2015 vintage was characterized by a winter with abundant precipitation which assisted in creating important reserves of rainwater in the ground; a mild spring was followed by a warm and dry summer with temperatures above seasonal averages. Rains and a lowering of temperatures during the second half of August re-created optimal conditions for the vines. There were no problems of healthy development, and the vineyard continued to ripen the grapes in an excellent fashion, accumulating the typical aromatic substances of the different grapes varieties. Fermentation and Aging The varieties were fermented separately, and a small percentage of Viognier and Ansonica were harvested late in order to give the wine notes of warmth and ripeness. The grapes, at the moment of their arrival in the cellars, were given a soft pressing and the must chilled to a constant temperature of 50° Fahrenheit (10° centigrade) for 24 hours in order to favor a natural static settling of the impurities. The clean must went into stainless steel fermenting tanks, where it fermented at a temperature of 61° Fahrenheit (16° centigrade). A brief three month aging period in stainless steel tanks on the fine lees preceded bottling. Alcohol: 12.5% Historical data The Le Mortelle estate was once part of a larger property which already appeared on the maps of Tuscan Grand Duke Leopold II in the mid-19th century. The estate is located in the province of Grosseto, in the heart of the lower Maremma, approximately 5.5 miles from the town of Castiglione della Pescaia.

Two recent publications, each examining more than 1000 wine grape varieties, have expanded the field not only for the academic researcher1 but also for the consumer.2 The first publication has already been discussed in an editorial in this journal,3 but the latter is a newly published tome of more than 1200 pages authored by two distinguished Masters of Wine from the UK, Jancis Robinson and Julia Harding, and by the academic researcher José Vouillamoz from the University of Neuchatel, For personal use only. The new book covers not only the genetics of wine grapes but also viticultural characteristics, places of cultivation, and the various wines and their taste. Some of these factors are more important to wine consumers than to researchers. Both publications show that inbreeding has limited wine grapes to a relatively small number of varieties sharing many incestuous relationships. Myles et al1 found that 75% of the 950 Vitis vinifera and 59 Vitis sylvestris varieties which they examined have direct family connections as parents, siblings, or offspring.
