2013 Is a Very Challenging Year for Regional Office No DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT Regional Office No. X CONTENTS MessageMessage fromfrom thethe RegionalRegional DirectorDirector HighlightsHighlights ofof AccomplishmentAccomplishment DOLEDOLE -- 1010 BestBest PracticesPractices DOLEDOLE -- 1010 PersonnelPersonnel 2013 is a very challenging year for Regional Office No. X but we confronted the challenges head on resulting to success. The ever increasing complexity of our programs and the heightened demands from our stakeholders were matched with the DOLE-X staff’s steadfast capacity to absorb and cope with the exigencies of public service and customer satisfaction. The staffs’ abilities to adjust to circumstances, commitment, and perseverance to perform are substantiated with the institutional support the leadership has extended. We focused our accomplishments and best practices on five (5) Major Final Outputs of our Office Performance Commitment and Review which are Employment Facilitation and Manpower Development, Employment Relations, Standard Enforcement and Protection, Employment Enhancement, Empowerment and Welfare, as well as Social Partnership Promotion, and Institutional Support. For in the midst of limited resources, unbeatable deadlines, hectic schedules, and everything that goes with the attainment of our goals, we have surmounted these encounters and achieved more than what was expected of us. Even our five-month journey towards ISO 9001:2008 has encouraged us to go the extra mile in accomplishing our targets and ended the year with a bang through our ISO 9001:2008 Attestation. These feat were realized through the efforts of my DOLE-X regional and provincial teams particularly the unwavering support and commitment of our partners and stakeholders, like the LGUs, NGAs, private/business sector, Labor and People’s Organizations. Our convergence made a difference in the lives of the people of Northern Mindanao. The Single Entry Approach collaboration with the Regional Coordinating Committee added meaning to teamwork, and synergy. I and my staff are always grateful to the Central Leadership for motivating us to exceed our objectives in the name of public service. May this Annual Report provide valuable and significant information and encourage sharing of learnings and experiences. Congratulations to all who made 2013 productive! ATTY. ALAN M. A Report on the Archaeological Survey Along the Coastal Area of Misamis Oriental, Philippines1 Leee M. Neri2 Abstract This article is the result of the initial archaeological reconnaissance conducted along the coast of Misamis Oriental in the island of Mindanao, Philippines. The team was able to identify possible archaeological sites based on the presence of artefacts and stone ruins. Based on the conventional and prevailing way of archaeological identification in the Philippines, these identified sites are classified as open sites, cave sites, and historical sites. Foreign ceramics were used to establish the relative dates of the archaeological sites in the different municipalities in Misamis Oriental. Forty-one archaeological sites were identified along the coast of Misamis Oriental: 25 open sites, 12 historical sites, and 4 cave sites. This initial archaeological investigation will help generate information on the history of the area and may serve as significant reference for future archaeological research in Mindanao. Introduction Previous archaeological studies conducted in Misamis Oriental in the municipalities of Tagoloan (Cuevas and Bautista 1991), Jasaan (Peralta 1 Editor’s note: Earlier versions of the different sections of this paper came out in various publications (Neri and Ragragio 2008; Neri et al. 2008, 2009, 2010a, 2010b). The current format consolidates all the archaeological explorations conducted in Northern Misamis Oriental by the author. 2 University Research Associate, Archaeological Studies Program, University of the Philippines, Diliman. • Diversity and Dispersion Patterns of Echinoderms in Babanlagan, Talisayan, Misamis Oriental, Philippines
Environmental and Experimental Biology (2016) 14: 213–217 Original Paper http://doi.org/10.22364/eeb.14.28 Diversity and dispersion patterns of echinoderms in Babanlagan, Talisayan, Misamis Oriental, Philippines Mara Elena J. Llacuna1, Angelo Mark P. Walag2*, Elaine A. Villaluz3 1St. Mary’s Academy of Talisayan, Talisayan, Misamis Oriental, Philippines 2Department of Science Education, Mindanao University of Science and Technology, Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines 3Department of Biology, Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan, Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines *Corresponding author, E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Echinoderms are fundamentally good indicators of health and status of coralline communities in marine waters. In this study, the diversity and distribution of echinoderm species were determined in Babanlagan, Talisayan, Misamis Oriental. In total, 387 individuals were collected coming from classes Echinoidea, Holothuroidea, Asteroidea, and Ophiuroidea. The majority of individuals collected were Protoreaster nodusus, which is a good indicator of reef health while the least abundant echinoderm species was Acanthaster planci. The pattern of distribution of majority of echinoderms was a clumped distribution while the other groups followed regular/uniform distribution, which may be due to limited dispersal ability and availability and available food sources. Moderate species diversity was also observed and species were rather similar in abundance, shown by the evenness index. This suggests good marine health, even under the threat of gleaning activities, active fishing, and habitat destruction. It is recommended that follow-up studies are conducted especially regarding monitoring of echinoderm species, to further assess the health of the intertidal zone in Babanlagan, Talisayan, Misamis Oriental. Key words: Acanthaster planci, diversity, echinoderms, Protoreaster nodusus, Philippines, sea stars.

  • Whale Sharks of Northern Mindanao: Hunters to Spotters?
! Whale sharks of northern Mindanao: hunters to spotters? Large Marine Vertebrates Research Institute Philippines Progress Report II by Gonzalo Araujo & Jessica Labaja This report presents our final update for our 2017 whale shark research and conservation work in Northern Mindanao, Philippines. After completion of our leg of the work in Talisayan, Misamis Oriental, we moved west to Salay on the eastern side of Macajalar Bay, south Bohol Sea. We completed a total of 27 surveys along the municipality of Salay, extending from Balingasag to the south and towards Talisayan to the northeast, covering 96 hours and 1,021 km of effort. During our surveys we didn’t encounter any whale sharks, however the locals did confirm their presence in the area. The municipality of Salay has 725 fishermen registered with the Local Government Unit in 8 coastal barangays (villages). We aimed to interview 40% of them (290) to keep consistency with our previous work in Talisayan and with other similar studies, to understand their experiences and interactions with whale sharks, and other megafauna catches. Here, we present preliminary results from fisherfolk questionnaires in Salay and Talisayan. Whale Sharks of northern Mindanao: Project Update 2 Background The whale shark Rhincodon typus is the world’s largest fish, and it inhabits the tropical and warm temperate waters of the world (Rowat & Brooks, 2012). Whale sharks create seasonal aggregations in certain areas, normally linked to primary productivity (e.g. Robinson et al., 2013; Motta et al., 2010; Rohner et al., 2015). This predictability makes them targets to hunters and tourists alike. In the Philippines, targeted fisheries for whale sharks operated in the Bohol Sea area into the late 1990s, with over 100 whale sharks landed seasonally at just two sites (Pamilacan Island, Bohol, and Talisayan in Misamis Oriental; Alava et al., 2002).
