Established in November 2015, the Piramal Museum of Art is a state-of-the-art museum space to host the Piramal family’s collection of important, historic and rare pieces from contemporary and modern Indian art. Since its inception, it has desired to not just provide general access to its collection, but also presented curated exhibitions featuring the works of renowned Indian artists. The Museum is one of the key components under the Piramal Art Foundation, a philanthropic effort founded by Dr. Swati Piramal and Mr. Ajay Piramal in 2014, to collect, preserve, document and exhibit the Indian art in their collection. Piramal Art Collection Our core collection features works from renowned artists such as S.H. Raza, Raja Ravi Varma, M. F. Husain, Akbar Padamsee, Hemendranath Mazumdar, Gaganendranath Tagore, Jehangir Sabavala, Bikash Bhattacharjee, K.G. Subramanyan, and many others. Over the years, it has traversed into covering other artists within specific artistic movements, such as the Dutch Bengal School and Kalighat paintings, as well as patronising newer names in the art world. Aside from regular programmes and events, the Museum undertakes the preservation and documentation of collected artworks for research and education. Museum and Education Spread across various corporate complexes in Mumbai, including our primary space in Lower Parel, and other galleries in Kurla, Byculla, Thane and Mulund, the Museum gives visitors the opportunity to delve into a range of art-making practices, interact with our featured artists, and make their own art. Our outreach programme, which runs the year- round, includes process-based workshops and events designed for visitors of various ages and levels of experience. We focus on getting students into the museum by regularly teaming up with schools and colleges for visits and activities. Besides catering to younger audiences, our strategy also encompasses employees and working professionals. Starting with our debut exhibition in 2015, the Museum has surveyed over 300 years of Indian art to present art in a manner that is engaging, informative and educative to a wide- ranging audience. These exhibitions have been critically acclaimed for their research- intensive, yet lucid approach and unique exhibition design. Past and Current Exhibitions include: 2019 • Before the Canvas (August 2019 to November 2019) • Making Art: Materials and Technology (February 2019 to June 2019) • Four-Point Perspective (December 2018 to February 2019) • The Public Art Programme Phase 2 (January 2019 to February 2019) Piramal Art Residency The organisation also runs the Piramal Art Residency – an artists’ residency programme started in 2016 that provides an opportunity for artists from different parts of the country to come together and exchange ideas regarding their practise. Previous cycles of the residency have focused on themes like Art and Science, Reimagining Mumbai, Sustaining Earth, Articulations in Wood, and Installations. Building upon the artistic practices in the form of studio and gallery visits, lectures and mentorship by senior artists, the Museum also displays the artwork of our esteemed Residency alumni and hosts open studio days to integrate the local artist and art-lover’s community. So far, the Residency has organised 21 cycles, with over 100 Indian artists who have passed through the residency programme. Cycle 22 is based on ‘Warp and Weft Journeys’ and runs from August 16 to September 14. .
