Letter Correspondences of Rabindranath Tagore: a Study

Besides family members and Santiniketan associates, Tagore wrote to different personalities like litterateurs, poets, artists, editors, thinkers, scientists, politicians, statesmen and government officials. These letters form a substantial part of intellectual output of ‘Tagoreana’ (all the intellectual output of Rabindranath). The present paper attempts to study the growth pattern of letters written by Rabindranath and to find out whether it follows Bradford’s Law. It is observed from the study that Rabindranath wrote letters throughout his literary career to three hundred fifteen persons covering all aspects such as literary, social, educational, philosophical as well as personal matters and it does not strictly satisfy Bradford’s bibliometric law. Tagore’s letters world as a poet. But he was a great short-story writer, written to his niece Indira Devi Chaudhurani dramatist and novelist, a powerful author of essays published in Chhinapatravali1 written during 1885- and lectures, philosopher, composer and singer, 1895 are not just letters but finer prose from where innovator in education and rural development, actor, the true picture of poet Rabindranath as well as director, painter and cultural ambassador. -

Tagore, Poet and Humanist Jack Lindsay There are many aspects of Indian culture which deserve to be more widely known, aspects which are interesting in themselves and of considerable relevance to us all in the struggle to create a culture adequate totheneedsof the world today. Rabindranath Tagore as a poet and humanist is widely known as a name, but generally as little more. His achievement is however so vital and so far-reaching that we can all profit by considering and studying it. I have called him poet because I think that his poetry lies at the core of his work, but since it was 'poetry as activity,' to use a phrase of Tristan Tzara, it spreads into other spheres, ultimately into all spheres of human activity. The way in which Tagore followed up the forces radiating from his poetry and developed a many-sided expression without ever losing touch with the central impulse makes him in many respects an exemplary figure for us all, whatever national culture we work in. His many-sidedness becomes a powerful protest against the fragmentation of modern man, an expression of human wholeness and a demonstration of the ways in which creativeness can invade every sphere without dissipating itself or losing its grasp of the essential goals. Early on, he realised that India was in the throes of a new birth, throwing off the constricting pressures of foreign domination and of backward elements in its own cultural inheritance. He knew that he was present at the first stages of the resurrection of a whole people and felt the stirring possiblities for his own art as a responsibility from which he must never swerve. -

As a group, these artists have probed such profound themes as the nature of cre- ation and representations of the divine, the essence of being human, the charac- ter of the heroic, and such formal con- cerns as color, form and space. Four of the artists represented in this exhibition (Dave, Goud, Reddy and Rodwittiya) were trained at the newly established fine arts department at Maharaja Sayajirao University in Baroda. This program is not limited to traditional European or Indian approaches to art, but was designed to be international in its scope and training. -

The second wave of the virus is already adversely affecting counties such as England, France, Germany, and the USA. In India, people are suffering from the widespread impact of this disease for the last nine months. It has deeply affected our life, livelihood, health, economy, environment, and mental health. This grim scenario is not only specific to our country but can be witnessed globally. At this critical juncture, literature is extremely important as it can lift us from the nadir of depression and the abyss of nothingness. Hence, while critically engaging with the sub-theme ‘Pandemic and Literature’ we should not limit our studies to texts dealing with crises, pandemics and apocalypse. We must broaden our perspective to include texts that can emotionally heal us and generate feelings of positivity, faith, strength, and peace. Hence, this paper re-reads Tagore’s Gitanjali from the present position of being sufferers of a global crisis. The text is timeless and our contemporary. It contains Tagore’s deep engagement with philosophy and spirituality. We should re-read it and fetch newer meanings relevant to our present context. It is relevant and a necessary read for both ‘the home and the world’. ASIATIC, VOLUME 3, NUMBER 1, JUNE 2009 Clinton B. Seely, Barisal and Beyond: Essays on Bangla Literature . New Delhi: Chronicle Books, 2008. 322pp. ISBN 81-8028-036-5. The author of this book is the protagonist of a charming inter-cultural romance. He is one of fewer than a handful of living Westerners who fortuitously fell in love with Bengali literature and made a distinguished career of teaching it – at the University of Chicago in his case. A major in Botany from Stanford, he volunteered for the Peace Corps and spent a year and nine months (1963-65) training high school science teachers in Barisal, in present-day Bangladesh. In the process he picked up Bangla (or Bengali) and, through the desultory chitchat that Bengalis call adda , gathered some idea about the greatest writer in the language, Rabindranath Tagore. At the end of his stint he enrolled for a PhD at the Department of South Asian Languages and Civilisations, University of Chicago and discovered Bengal’s greatest modern poet, whose hometown was his familiar Barisal. His thesis, published as A Poet Apart: A Literary Biography of the Bengali Poet Jibanananda Das (1889-1954) , won him West Bengal’s most prestigious literary award. His other publications include three translated volumes, of which the one of Michael Madhusudan Datta’s epic, The Slaying of Meghnada: A Ramayana from Colonial Bengal , got him the A.K. Ramanujan Book Prize for Translation. The present volume is a mixed bag of essays and lectures covering a number of significant aspects of Bengali literature. Though the focus is predominantly on modern or post-Plassey literature, Seely’s grasp of the earlier traditions of Bengali writing is palpable in several essays. -

Women’s College, Burdwan West Bengal, India E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Jibanananda Das, a poet of the post-Tagore era in Bengal, composed volumes of poetry, from which some representative poems such as “I have seen the face of Bengal,” “Banalata Sen,” and “One Day Eight Years Ago” have been selected for the present study. To capture the “harmonic cadences” arising from employment of different types of rhyme and figures of speech in Das’s poetry is a challenge for his translators. Besides, considerations of form and the art of conveying Das’s sense of history of India when the target audience is non- Indian are equally challenging. However, some gains in the form of transcreation may be considered compensations for inevitable losses incurred in course of translation. They have glorified Bengal as well as India in the sphere of whole universe. Tagore wrote many legendary novels which were later taken as the scripts of Indian films. Such an epoch making novel of Tagore was Nostonirh (The Broken Nest) which was transformed into a film in the hand of renowned director, Satyajit Ray. Ray not only took the story, he also mixed the plot with his imagination. This compilation leads the novel to become almost a similar famous film in Bengali, ‘Charulata’. My article will try to highlight this artistic approach of Ray along with his adoption of the novel. Key words: Tagore, Ray, Nostonirh, Charulata, Bhupati, Amal. Rabindranath Tagore's stories exemplify his remarkable abilities to enter into the complexities of human relationships profoundly. Within the seemingly simple plots, he could explore the psychological aspects of his characters properly. They seem to be the true representatives of their time. As a result they bring out the sociological aspects of the then Bengali society. In his highly acclaimed novel Nostonirh (The Broken Nest), Tagore simply portrays with extraordinary compassion and lyricism the predicament of women in traditional Bengali contexts, through the loneliness of an intelligent, beautiful woman who is neglected by her husband.
