Around Wm rages a social revolution unprecedented inAmeri- can history. Taking place within the contextof a world wide struggle for human rights, this revolution involves a massive recasting ofroles and relationships across ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic lines. Atits heart lies the destruction of the inequalities of practice and theory that have long alienated a substantial portion of the American people. The current civil rights, revolution has raised manyfundamental ques- tions involving the essence of quality education and the roleof the school in preparing children for full, responsible citizenship. Infact, it has com- pelled the schools to reassess their entire educational program.As part of this reassessment, studies have been made of the extent towhich his- tory textbooks in use in schools andcolleges include adequate treatment of the role of the Negro in American history. Theyindicate that many textbooks either distort or omit important information on thehistory and achievement of Negroes. The October 9, 1962policy statement of the Superintendent of Schools referred to suchdeficiencies in calling upon publishers to present "acomprehensive and satisfactory picture of the status of minority groups in our culture." The Negro in American History is designed to giveteachers, and through them their students, a broader and more factual statement on the Negro in our nation's history.Its basic aim is to promote a better understanding of America's past by developingincreased awareness of the history of American Negroes, their problems,and their accomplish- mentsboth individually and as a group. Togetherwith other appro- priate materials, this bulletin should aid teachersin recognizing and responding to the many opportunities in ourcurricula for effective instruction on the contributions of minority groups toAmerican life. Its use by teachers should further thedevelopment of democratic at- titudes and encourage appreciation for thosecultural values which are a part of ournational heritage. Prejudice and misunderstandings invariablyresult from the lack of knowledge. It is our hope' that a better understandingof the role of the Negro in our history and culturewill contribute to intergroup harmony and that our schools will continue toproduce leaders capable of maintaining and securing those rightsand liberties which all Americans cherish.     NEGROES ARE DIFFERENT IN DIXIE: THE PRESS, PERCEPTION, AND NEGRO LEAGUE BASEBALL IN THE JIM CROW SOUTH, 1932 BY THOMAS AIELLO RESEARCH ESSAY ______________________________________________ “Only in a Negro newspaper can a complete coverage of ALL news effecting or involving Negroes be found,” argued a Southern Newspaper Syndicate advertisement. “The good that Negroes do is published in addition to the bad, for only by printing everything fit to read can a correct impression of the Negroes in any community be found.”1 Another argued that, “When it comes to Negro newspapers you can’t measure Birmingham or Atlanta or Memphis Negroes by a New York or Chicago Negro yardstick.” In a brief section titled “Negroes Are Different in Dixie,” the Syndicate’s evaluation of the Southern and Northern black newspaper readers was telling: Northern Negroes may ordain it indecent to read a Negro newspaper more than once a week—but the Southern Negro is more consolidated. Necessity has occasioned this condition. Most Southern white newspapers exclude Negro items except where they are infamous or of a marked ridiculous trend… While his northern brother is busily engaged in ‘getting white’ and ruining racial consciousness, the Southerner has become more closely knit.2 The advertisement was designed to announce and justify the Atlanta World’s reformulation as the Atlanta Daily World, making it the first African-American daily. This fact alone probably explains the advertisement’s “indecent” comment, but its “necessity” argument seems far more legitimate.3 For example, the 1932 Monroe Morning World, a white daily from Monroe, Louisiana, provided coverage of the black community related almost entirely to crime and church meetings.

Garvey's was a black nationalist movement organized around the principles of race first, self-reliance, and nationhood. At its height in the mid-1920s, the UNIA comprised millions of members and close supporters spread over more than forty countries in the Americas, Africa, Europe, and Australia. The Negro World was a faithful reflexion of all the UNIA stood for. It educated African people everywhere on the need for self-determination and racial uplift. With its international reach, it became a major recruiting tool for the organization. Like the larger movement, however, the Negro World was viewed with hostility and suspicion by European and other governments. The Negro World began publication in 1918 in Harlem, New York, about two years after Garvey arrived in the United States from his native Jamaica. Garvey had founded the UNIA in Jamaica in 1914, and he conceived the idea of a major publication before leaving for the United States. He brought considerable experience in journalism and printing to the paper.

E. B. Du Bois and the Vision of Africa’s Past Tracey Lynn Thompson Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto 2011 Abstract Scholars have examined many aspects of W. E. B. Du Bois’s project of empowering oppressed peoples in the United States and around the world. However they have treated in only a fragmentary way one of the principal strategies that he used to counter hegemonic ideologies of African and African American inferiority. That strategy was to turn to the evidence of history. Here I argue that Du Bois, alerted by Franz Boas to Africans’ historical attainments, confronted claims made by European Americans that Africans and a fortiori African Americans lacked any achievement independent of European or other foreign influence. Du Bois linked African Americans to Africa and laid out repeatedly and in detail a narrative of autonomous African historical accomplishment. I demonstrate that his approach to the history of Africa constituted a radical departure from the treatment of Africa presented by scholars located in the mainstream of contemporary anglophone academic thought. I argue that while his vision of Africa’s history did not effect any significant shift in scholarly orthodoxy, it played a crucial role, at a grave juncture in race relations in the United States, in helping to equip young African Americans with the psychological resources necessary to challenge white supremacist systems.
