Mencken and Van Wyck Brooks vociferously expounded a deep and profound disenchantment with American art and culture. At a time when American popular entertainments were expanding exponentially, and at a time when European high modernism was in full flower, American culture appeared to these critics to be at best a quagmire of philistinism and at worst an oxymoron. Today there is still general agreement that American arts “came of age” or “arrived” in the 1920s, thanks in part to this flogging criticism, but also because of the powerful influence of European modernism. Yet, this assessment was not, at the time, unanimous, and its conclusions should not, I argue, be taken as foregone. In this dissertation, I present crucial case studies of Constance Rourke (1885-1941) and Gilbert Seldes (1893-1970), two astute but understudied cultural critics who saw the same popular culture denigrated by Brooks or Mencken as vibrant evidence of exactly the modern American culture they were seeking. In their writings of the 1920s and 1930s, Rourke and Seldes argued that our “lively arts” (Seldes’ formulation) of performance—vaudeville, minstrelsy, burlesque, jazz, radio, and film—contained both the roots of our own unique culture as well as the seeds of a burgeoning modernism.

    The Communal Legitimacy of Collective Violence: Community and Politics in Antebellum New York City Irish Gang Subculture by James Peter Phelan A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Department of History and Classics University of Alberta ©James Phelan, 2014 ii Abstract This thesis examines the influences that New York City‘s Irish-Americans had on the violence, politics, and underground subcultures of the antebellum era. During the Great Famine era of the Irish Diaspora, Irish-Americans in Five Points, New York City, formed strong community bonds, traditions, and a spirit of resistance as an amalgamation of rural Irish and urban American influences. By the middle of the nineteenth century, Irish immigrants and their descendants combined community traditions with concepts of American individualism and upward mobility to become an important part of the antebellum era‘s ―Shirtless Democracy‖ movement. The proto-gang political clubs formed during this era became so powerful that by the late 1850s, clashes with Know Nothing and Republican forces, particularly over New York‘s Police force, resulted in extreme outbursts of violence in June and July, 1857. By tracking the Five Points Irish from famine to riot, this thesis as whole illuminates how communal violence and the riots of 1857 may be understood, moralised, and even legitimised given the community and culture unique to Five Points in the antebellum era. iii Table of Contents Introduction ...................................................................................................................................

Data come predominantly from interviews with observers (correctional officials) and from the authors’ expe- riences in working with correctional, police, and school personnel. The methodology used is an opportunity sample. The article reviews the literature on gangs and addresses why early studies showed few females in gangs and then typically in defined peripheral roles. KEYWORDS Gangs, female gangs, correctional settings, security threat groups INTRODUCTION Males form gangs. Today, neighborhoods, schools, and correctional insti- tutions struggle with these informal social groups that direct males toward committing illegal acts including violence, drug trade, and extortion. Gangs can be pervasive and extremely threatening—so much so that correctional facilities refer to them as security threat groups (STGs) to lessen their psy- chological impact. Some gangs are neighborhood-based and last only a few years. Others will last more than a generation, acknowledging veterans and holding a territory. Gangs may extend beyond a single neighborhoodand use economic activities to impact those social institutions seeking to eliminate or control them (e.g., crime syndicates such as the Mafia and groups in Mexico that war with local and federal authorities to control the drug trade and the movement of drugs into the United States).

HISTORICAL FACTS, PEOPLE AND PLACES Born in New Jersey (on the 24th of July, 1821), William Poole died of a gunshot wound in Manhattan (on the 8th of March, 1855). He was 33 years old. During his life, Poole was many things: a butcher, a politician, a gang- leader. He was killed by a supporter of his Tammany-Hall rival. On February 24, 1855, while at a new Manhattan bar (Stanwix Hall), Poole picked a fight with John Morrissey, an Irish-born Tammany political opponent. Although the newly married Morrison went home, Poole returned to the bar with his friends. As usual, he was looking for trouble. He found a ready match in the Tammany sluggers, Jim Turner and Lew Baker. Herbert Asbury, in The Gangs of New York, describes the murder of Bill the Butcher: He [Jim Turner] quickly flung aside his Talma [a cape named after the French actor, Talma], displaying a huge Colt’s revolver, with a long barrel, strapped about his waist. He drew the weapon, levelled it in the hollow of his elbow and pulled the trigger. But his aim was poor and he shot himself in the arm, whereupon he screeched and fell to the floor.
