T It attempts to identify policy, social, infrastructure, and technology issues that must be addressed to meet future energy need of ADB members in Asia and the Pacific. The first edition of the Energy Outlook for Asia and the Pacific, which provided an energy supply and demand outlook for the region up to 2030, was published by ADB in 2009. Since then however, there have been various developments affecting the energy sectors of both developed and developing economies that justify this update, including (i) the lasting economic recession in major developed energy-consuming countries and its impact on other parts of the world, (ii) geopolitical and social unrest in the Middle East and Africa, (iii) repercussions of the Fukushima nuclear incident on nuclear energy development programs, (iv) aging energy infrastructure in Asia and the Pacific, and (v) expansion in renewable energy development and energy efficiency improvements within the region. In contrast to other energy outlooks that deal solely with whole regions, this report also focuses on the local characteristics of the ADB members in Asia and the Pacific, with the intention of providing critical and strategic insights into the energy sector of individual ADB members. This report presents two cases of energy demand and supply for the ADB member economies in Asia and the Pacific: (i) a business-as-usual case, which reflects the impact of existing policies and current technology levels on future energy demand and energy choice, as well as assumes that current trends in the development of new and renewable energy sources will continue into the future; and (ii) an alternative case that considers the potential for energy savings on both the demand and the supply sides from the deployment of advanced and low-carbon technologies to increase energy security in the region. The study also presents the results of analyses made to estimate carbon dioxide emissions and investments required on the supply and demand sides for both the business-as-usual and the alternative cases. Also identified and discussed are major issues that are likely to affect the energy demand and supply in Asia and the Pacific, including electricity trade among members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), shale gas development in North America, electrification, fuel subsidies, subregional cooperation on oil and natural gas supply, biofuels in Asia, energy efficiency, low-carbon city development, modal shifts in transportation, renewable energy development, and carbon capture and storage. This report is not meant to predict the future trajectory of the energy sector in Asia and the Pacific. Rather, it is meant solely to provide scenarios of what could happen should the ADB economies take particular courses of action, as defined by the scenario assumptions. Not all issues relevant to the energy sector in Asia and the Pacific have been addressed in this study. This paper proposes a framework for cross-border electricity trade in the Bangladesh-Bhutan-India-Nepal (BBIN) region that recognizes the governance challenges associated with establishing an international electricity market. We explore the lessons for BBIN region from different types of Cross Border Electricity Trade (CBET) models. Specifically, existing markets in North-West Europe (NWE), Latin America, and the United States (US) provide insights into the development of our proposed cost-based CBET framework. We provide recommendations based on our proposed CBET framework to improve efficiency and increase the extent of electricity trade in the BBIN region.     Sapporo, Japan Destination Guide Overview of Sapporo The most remarkable thing about the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido and its capital city Sapporo, is the contrast in temperatures between winter and summer. Sapporo, site of the 1972 Winter Olympics, is a favourite ski destination with temperatures plummeting well below freezing in December and January - the lowest ever recorded was in January 1945, when the mercury dropped to -11ºF (-24ºC). Summer, however, sees daytime highs of above 86ºF (30ºC), although evenings and mornings are cooler. Because of the thick snows that turns the city into a winter wonderland, Sapporo is favoured more as a winter sports destination than a spring or summer resort. There are ski slopes within the city limits and residents often enjoy a quick run after work. Sapporo is one of Japan's newest cities, having been constructed almost from scratch as the capital of Hokkaido in 1871. Japan imported foreign technicians (including 46 Americans) to aid in the development of the city, formerly a small settlement of the native Ainu people, which has now grown to accommodate about two million inhabitants. Despite a large population, Sapporo is not as crowded or densely packed as other Japanese cities. A national survey ranked it as one of the country's most desirable places to live, which is not surprising because its natural setting allows for easy access to mineral spas, mountain hikes, campsites, and superb ski runs. Tourists enjoy the outdoor delights of the region and experiencing the ancient culture of the local Ainu people. Key Facts Language: Japanese is the official language.

Mono-Rail guided Carriage Transport in India from 1902 to 1927 The first Mono-Rail guided goods carriage system, a road borne railway system, had been the Kundala Valley Railway in India, which was built in 1902 and operated between Munnar and Top Station in the Kannan Devan Hills of Kerala. It operated with a cart- vehicle, built to transport tea and other goods. The initial cart road was cut in 1902 and then replaced by the monorail goods carriage system along the road leading from Munnar to Top Station for the purpose of transporting tea and other products from Munnar and Madupatty to Top Station. This monorail was based on the Ewing System (see below) and had small steel-wheels placed on the mono-rail track while a larger wheel rested on the road to balance the monorail. The mono-rail was pulled by bullocks. Top Station was a trans-shipment point for delivery of tea from Munnar to Bodinayakkanur. Tea chests arriving at Top Station were then transported by an aerial ropeway from Top Station 5 km (3 mi) down-hill to the south to Kottagudi, Tamil Nadu, which popularly became known as "Bottom Station".

Over the last decade, import of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has increased by 3.3 times as an alternate cooking fuel to kerosene and firewood. The growing subsidy burden to endorse modern fuel switching from traditional energy sources and high import of LPG are challenges for sustainability and energy security. This paper analyzes the future residential cooking energy demand and its environmental and economic impacts from 2015 to 2035 using a Long-range Energy Alternative Planning System (LEAP) tool. In 2035, the LPG demand for cooking is projected to be 26.5 million GJ, 16.3 million GJ, 45.2 million GJ and 58.2 million GJ for business as usual (BAU), low growth rate (LGR), medium growth rate (MGR) and high growth rate (HGR) scenarios, respectively. To substitute LPG with electricity in the cooking sector by 2035, an additional 1207 MW, 734 MW, 2055 MW and 2626 MW hydropower installation is required for BAU, LGR, MGR and HGR scenarios, respectively. In the MGR scenario, substituting LPG with electricity could save from $21.8 million (2016) to $70.8 million (2035) each year, which could be used to develop large-scale hydropower projects in the long term.

Survey objective To clarify those land value trends of intensively used districts in major cities on a quarterly basis, which tend to indicate property market trends leadingly. 2. Matters to be surveyed Licensed Real Property Appraisers (LRPAs) collect information on the real property markets of the surveyed districts, and estimate land value trends by using real property appraisal approaches to value. The results are to be aggregated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. 3. Surveyed districts Those districts in three major metropolitan areas (Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya areas) and other major cities, land price trends of which are particularly important in the real property market. A total of 100 districts, including 43 districts in Tokyo area, 25 districts in Osaka area, 9 districts in Nagoya area, and 23 districts in other major cities, are surveyed. Although it is believed that the TBE use and energy poverty can be eradicated through the supply of modern energy services, this case study reflects the minimal role of grid electricity supply in eradicating the use of TBEs in the study area. The result of the study shows how the poor socio-economic condition and low awareness level on the negative impacts of TBE use have been the main factors guiding the energy choices of the households.
