Since Narita is primarily for international flights, there are only a limited number of direct flights to Sapporo (3 flights/day). So the common choice would be transferring to Haneda Airport for domestic flights. Depending on your time of arrival, staying overnight in Tokyo might be more convenient.

❍ Railway stations (for both JR and Keisei) are underground, beneath the terminal buildings. Narita has two terminal buildings (Terminal 1 & 2), and each have their own station (see "Terminal Guide Map" above).

❍ Bus departures leave at ground level, and arrivals stop at the upper deck (for "Flight Departures"), in front of each terminal building.

❍ So when coming to Narita (by rail or by bus), be careful to get off at the proper station/stop.

● Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport) Hub airport for domestic flights from Tokyo metropolitan district; and one of the busiest airports in the world. From Airport to City Center

● New Chitose Airport Wiki As the gateway to Hokkaido, the New Chitose Airport actually handles more passengers than either Kansai Airport or Centrair. Domestic flights fly here from all over Japan, and there are also international flights from Asia (including China, Hong Kong, Korea, and Taiwan). These flights may be convenient for participants from those countries/regions. The airport is about 40km(25 mi) southeast of the city center of Sapporo (45km on rail from the Airport station to Sapporo Station). The most convenient way to reach city center is by the "Rapid Airport" train from the New Chitose Airport station to Sapporo station (36 min. ride; 4 trains/hr.). Other options are shuttle buses (to downtown including Sapporo station), taxis, and local buses (not recommended).

● Riding "Rapid Airport" (and other railways)

❍ The "Rapid Airport" (Kaisoku Airport) is destined for either Sapporo, Otaru or Asahikawa, all with stops at Sapporo.

❍ The trains leave every 15 mins. starting from 8:34 and on the minutes 04, 19, 34, 49 of every hour (till 21:00; more irregular beyond to the final train on 22:50). Timetable Airport→Sapporo Sapporo→Airport

Buying Tickets (the following apply to other railways as well)

❍ Tickets for short distance are usually bought with vending machines near the ticket gate. (see photos)

❍ Look for your destination on the route map above the vending machines, and find out the fare. (In the case of Airport→Sapporo, remembering "1,040 yen" would suffice.)

❍ Insert money first. Most machines accept 10-500 yen coins and 1,000 yen bills, and some machines also accept 5,000 and 10,000 yen bills.

❍ Press the button showing the intended fare amount (in our case, 1040 yen). The ticket will come out with the change (in some cases, you might have to press the "change" button to get the change).

❍ Buying tickets with reserved seats (U-seats) are a bit more complicated, so you might better ask the station attendant (in the booth) for help. Although the reserved seats are more comfortable, there are also plenty of non-reserved seats (unless extremely crowded, in which case the reserved seats may also be sold out anyway), so choose your pick. Boarding Trains

❍ Insert your ticket in the ticket gate machine, with the dark side (= magnetic coated side) down. Don't forget to retrieve your ticket that pops out on the other end of the gate machine -- you'll need it when getting off and on on-board ticket inspection.

❍ Getting out from the station is the same procedure, except that this time the ticket does not come out.

❍ Overhead electric signs show the track number, destination, and departure time of the trains. The signs alternate between Japanese and English. Take the train of your destination. Be careful not to take other trains -- take only the "Rapid Airport". Note: Reserved seat cars are for those with reserved seat tickets only.

❍ "Rapid Airport" has pre-recorded English announcements announcing the next station, destination, etc. Get off at your destination (in our case, Sapporo Station).

❍ "Rapid Airport" (and other Japanese trains in general) is non-smoking. Mid- and long-distance trains (including "Rapid Airport") are equipped with toilets.

(Location numbers (1), (74) below correspond to the numbers in the detailed "Campus Map" above. ) Revised 08/08/13 due to change of map. The Main Gate (1) is less than 400m from Sapporo Station (North Exit, West Concourse) -- about a 5-min. walk. You can ask for campus maps at the guard's booth on the left of the Main Gate. The conference venue is Center for Research and Development in Higher Education (74); which is 1.2km north of the Main Gate. So in summary, the conference site is about 1.6km (1 mi.) from Sapporo Station -- a 20-30 min. walk (mostly a pleasant walk through the campus).

Campus Bus (08/05/01) There is also a free campus bus service that circulates the campus and connects the Main Gate and the conference venue (five busstops: see the hotel map for the bus route).

For those from the subway (Namboku-line), the easiest way to the conference venue (74) is to get off at the "Kita 18-jo" (Kita juhachi jo) Station, which is the second station northbound from Sapporo Station (subway). From there, it is a 400m, 5-min. walk westward to the conference venue. This will be convenient for those staying in the downtown area.

● Moerenuma Park The last day of the conference will be held at the additional venue of the Glass Pyramid "Hidamari" at Moerenuma Park. Detailed information will be provided later.

Travel Tips

● (See also the FAQ Page for related information.)

● Summer Vacation Season Hokkaido is a popular summer vacation resort; and although late August is off-peak of the busiest periods, it is strongly advised to make reservations (especially for domestic flights) well in

http://icmpc10.typepad.jp/blog/access/ (7/9) [2009/09/30 2:34:54] ICMPC10 (Sapporo, 2008): access

advance. The peak period is about August 11-20 (the traditional home- coming period of Obon); during which one should avoid moving around on domestic transportation.

● Street Names in Sapporo Streets in Sapporo are in square blocks and the blocks have numbered names (which are also used for street names). Streets running east-west are called Jo (dori)(dori< tori: street), and those running north-south as Choume (dori). The origin is at the corner of the Television Tower at Odori(Main avenue) and Souseigawa-dori, and the streets are numbered with the prefix of the direction they extend:

Kita north Minami south Nishi west Higashi east For example, the Main Gate of Hokkaido University is at the corner of "Kita 9-jo-dori" & "Nishi 5-choume-dori", while the subway station "Kita Juhachi Jo" (18-jo) is at the corner of "Kita 18-jo-dori" & "Nishi 4-choume-dori". Each numbered street is 100m apart, making it easy to know the rough distance. In the example above, the Main Gate and subway station are 9 blocks apart in the N/S direction and 1 block apart E/ W, so the block distance is about 1km (= 10 blocks).

● Language Accessibility

❍ English signs are available in major public facilities. Other Western languages are seldom supported.

❍ Airports and major stations also have signs written in Korean Hangul and Chinese Hanzi.

❍ Long distance trains, airport commutor trains have pre- recorded on-board English announcements.

❍ Do not expect English fluency from ordinary attendants and clerks (including railway station staff), although you can expect helpful intentions. Knowing a few Japanese words, speaking slowly and clearly, writing things down (be it in English) will be of great help.

❍ Restaurants often have dish samples in display windows, and/or menus with photographs, which would be of great help in knowing what you can expect.

● Getting Information

❍ Information of various sorts can be obtained at information centers (, booths, guides) at airports, stations, hotel desks, etc.

❍ The Information Center at Sapporo Station, West Concourse is well recommended; with a large collection of information sources (in various languages) and attending staff.

❍ The conference kit will also include useful information sources, so you can wait till receiving them at the registration desk.

● Smoking Policy

❍ Generally speaking, smoking is not allowed in most public areas (airports, stations, major stores, public buildings and institutes, etc.); except in designated smoking areas. Non- http://icmpc10.typepad.jp/blog/access/ (8/9) [2009/09/30 2:34:54] ICMPC10 (Sapporo, 2008): access

smoking facilities do tend to have such smoking areas some place or the other.

❍ Smoking is prohibited on public transportation vehicles (airplanes, trains, buses, etc.); with the exception of long- distance trains with smoking cars (or rooms). Smoking on taxis would depend on individual cars.

❍ Restaurants, bars and other eating facilities have differing policies. Some are totally non-smoking, some accept smoking, while others have separate smoking and non- smoking sections.

❍ Some (though not all) hotels have non-smoking rooms (and floors).

❍ Smoking in open public is legally restricted in the downtown area, and should be avoided in other places as well (as a matter of common sense). Smoke only where public ashtrays are available.

❍ Additional Note Starting July 2008, access of cigarette vending machines will be strictly restricted and would require pre-issued ID- cards.

● Accessibility for the Handicapped Accessibility for the handicapped has greatly improved in the recent few years. Airports, major stations and other public facilities, including the conference venue, are equipped with elevators, wheelchair slopes and toilets. Sidewalks have sloped, barrier-free crossings. Unfortunately, Kita Juhachi Jo Station, the subway station closest to the main venue, is one of the few subway stations without elevators or wheelchair toilets. Note: The elevator is currently under construction but is not expected to be ready by the conference.

Answers

General Information Q1 Are there other useful sites about visiting Japan? A1 Various useful links can be found throughout this Blogsite, so first try looking them up. For example, click here for information on the venue and region. A good source of information is the guide pages of other conferences. The following is ansee example.

● http://dc2008.jp/general_i.html ("General Information" page of "The 10th International Symposium on Dendritic Cells") Looking up Wikipedia would be a good place to start, with abundant articles and links to related pages. Trying search engines like Google and Yahoo! would

http://icmpc10.typepad.jp/blog/faq/ (2/6) [2009/09/30 2:34:58] ICMPC10 (Sapporo, 2008): FAQ

also be of help. Q2 What is the Japanese Currency? A2 The currency is Japanese yen (JPY). $1 (USD) is about 110-120 yen, and €1 (EUR) is about 150-170 yen, depending on the exchange rate. Try: Yahoo! Finance corrency converter page

for current exchange rates and conversion to your currency.

Coins are available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 yen, and bank notes in 1,000, 2,000 (rare), 5,000 and 10,000 yen. Japan is primarily a cash-based society (as opposed to card-based), so don't forget to carry sufficient cash with you (especially for the huge number of vending machines of all sorts). Q3 Can I use my credit card in Japan? A3 Major credit cards such as VISA, AMEX, MasterCard and Diner's Club can be used in hotels, major shops and restaurants. Smaller shops / restaurants may be cash- only, or accept cards for only large purchases. Train and bus tickets (usually bought by vending machines) require cash, although some long-distance tickets can be bought with cards. Cash withdrawal with credit cards or foreign bank cards is possible with ATM machines at post offices and other locations, but check their availability beforehand. Q4 What is the climate in Sapporo? A4 While most of Japan suffers a hot humid summer, late August in Sapporo will be cool and pleasant. The temperature will not greatly exceed 20°C; with occasional showers. See also the General Overview of Sapporo page. Q5 Can I bring my electric appliances? A5 Electric power in Sapporo (Eastern Japan) is 100V 50Hz. Plugs/Sockets are type A and B; which is the same as the United States. See "Mains power systems" article (Wikipedia) for details. AC adaptors of laptop computers are usually capable of handling various voltages. See the inscription on their labels. Other equipment might require stepping-up transformers (for 200+V). Q6 Is Internet access available? A6 Many (though not all) hotel rooms, especially the "business-hotel" types, have Internet access -- often free of charge. Internet accessibility at the conference site is to be announced, Paper/Abstract Submission Q1 Where can I find information for paper / abstract submissions? A1 The "Call for Papers" document (PDF) is available at the ICMPC10 official website.

http://icmpc10.typepad.jp/blog/faq/ (3/6) [2009/09/30 2:34:58] ICMPC10 (Sapporo, 2008): FAQ

Q2 When is the submission deadline? A2 Deadline for all submissions is Jan. 31, 2008. (changed from original announcement) Q3 How do I submit my application? A3 The primary method will be online submission from the Submissions Webpage. You can either directly enter structured abstracts in that page, or upload document files from that page. Q4 When will the submission procedure start? A4 The submission process is already under way. Please access the Submissions Webpage.

Conference Registration Q1 When will registration start? A1 [To be announced: see also the Registration / Accommodation page.] Q2 How much is the registration fee? A2 The registration fee is classfied according to the participants' status (student/regular), resident region, and time of registration. See the Registration Page for the registration fee table. Q3 What does the registration fee include? A3 It includes one copy of the Program, the Abstract Book, and the Proceedings (CD-ROM), as well as drinks and snacks during Coffee Breaks. Q4 Are there any grants for attending the conference? A4 There will be a Travel Award by SEMPRE, and a Young Researcher Award jointly by SEMPRE and ICMPC10. See the Call for Papers for details.

Accommodation Q1 How do I arrange my reservations? A1 The official travel agent of the conference is Knt!(Kinki Nippon Tourist Co.). Q2 How much do accommodations cost in Sapporo? A2 3,000- 20,000 JPY† per night, depending on the hotel type/class. † click the links to see the amount in your currency Q3 How much does a meal cost in Sapporo? A3 The cost of a meal varies from 300 JPY (e.g., pastry, sandwich, ramen noodles) to 5,000 JPY† (a very nice French, Italian, or Japanese dinner). Lunch costs 500 JPY or less on campus. With a moderate budget, daily meals would cost approximately 2,000 JPY to 3500 JPY†. † click the links to see the amount in your currency Q4 Can I find vegetarian meals?

http://icmpc10.typepad.jp/blog/faq/ (4/6) [2009/09/30 2:34:58] ICMPC10 (Sapporo, 2008): FAQ

A4 Vegetables and fruits are available in near-by convenience stores and food markets. You can easily find vegetarian dishes even in a restaurant as long as you are not a vegan; Japanese vegetable dishes often use fish-based broth/sauce. There are a few cafes and restaurants that serve strict vegetarian meals in Sapporo, and we will investigate their locations and meal options as the Conference approaches. Q5 Where can I buy refreshment drinks? A5 Vending machines are available almost everywhere. You can also buy refreshments at near-by convenience stores and markets, or at station stands. The conference will have on-site drinking corners available. Q6 Can I smoke? A6 Generally speaking, smoking in public places is prohibited or restricted. Smoke only at designated smoking areas. See Smoking Policy for details.

Conference Venue / Travel Q1 How do I arrive at Sapporo from abroad? A1 The main gateway to Sapporo, Hokkaido is the New Chitose Airport. Since the majority of international flights to Japan arrive at Narita International Airport, Kansai International Airport, or Central Japan International Airport (Centrair), taking a domestic transit flight from there to New Chitose will be your first choice. See the Access/Maps page for details. Q2 How do I get to the conference site? A2 It is a 36-min. ride on a "Rapid Airport" train from New Chitose Airport station to Sapporo station. The main conference site, Hokkaido University is within walking distance from Sapporo station. See the Access/Maps page for details. Q3 Do I need a visa to enter Japan? A3 Many countries / regions have visa exemption arrangements with Japan, so if you are from one of them, no visa is necessary for a short term visit. For countries without such arrangements (e.g. China, Russia), visas are required, so make sure to contact your foreign affairs agency in advance. See the below pages for details.

● Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Visa top page

● MOFA: "Exemption of Visas"

Q4 Where can I learn about the conference venue and location? A4 Try the following links.

● Hokkaido University (main venue)

● Moerenuma Park (sub venue)

● City of Sapporo

● Prefecture of Hokkaido

● Sapporo Tourist Association

http://icmpc10.typepad.jp/blog/faq/ (5/6) [2009/09/30 2:34:58] ICMPC10 (Sapporo, 2008): FAQ

Miscellaneous Q1 What is ICMPC? A1 See the ICMPC Website for general information. Q2 How can I read Web pages in Japanese? A2 There are two issues here -- one of character codes, and the other is translation. Character Codes Japanese Web pages may be in one of the following character codes: Unicode (UTF-8) SJIS (Shift-JIS, MS-JIS) EUC-JP 7-bit JIS (ISO-2022-JP) If your browser is set to an inappropriate code, then the page would appear boggled. Most browsers nowadays can handle UTF-8, and if your browser can handle multilingual input, then try setting the character code to one of the above and see what happens.

Translation For those who can't read Japanese, free translation services of Web pages are available. Some examples include: Google translate Yahoo! Search Language Tools Yahoo! Babel Fish AltaVista - Babel Fish Translation Actually, all these pages seem to be using the same engine (SYSTRAN), although outcome may differ. The translation quality cannot be guaranteed, but would be worth giving a try.

● News #12: Shuttle Dear Organizers! Service from New Chitose Airport As a longtime resident in Japan - teaching and doing research in music perception - I know the language difficulties that you face in organizing ● News #11: Invitation an international meeting! I expect that ICMPC10 will be organizationally to Social Programs exceptional, but I think some special steps must be taken to help the for Delegates & young Asian researchers present their work (while not allowing for an Accompanying increase in incoherent oral presentations). Specifically:

Persons (1) I would recommend that oral presentations are limited to researchers who have spent at least one year abroad. (This would be rather ● News #10: unfriendly to primarily non-English-native students/young researchers, Conference Program but is essential in consideration of the many hundred internationally now available experienced researchers from abroad in the audience.)

● News #9: Submission (2) In order for those same researchers who are not fluent in English to Deadline/ present their research, I would also recommend a “demo presentations” Registration Fee/Pre- session, where hardware and software can be concretely demonstrated. conference Workshop This would be distinct from the poster sessions and would involve a relatively small number (15-30?) of demos in an area with tables/ ● News #8: Notification speakers/monitors/ keyboards/etc. This would be a better way to of Acceptance/ present technological innovations, without demanding true fluency in Rejection English.

● News #7: Submission (3) As was done at a recent international conference in Nara, at the end Deadline Extended of the plenary session on the first day, each of the demo presenters would be given one (!) minute (and one (!) PowerPoint slide) to introduce their idea and essentially advertise for their demo presentation Recent Comments later in the week.

Comment# 2 ID# 2327101 Date: Sep 7, 2007 8:33:11 AM +09:00 (JST) From: Mayumi Adachi URL:

Dear Norman, Thank you for your suggestions. If we receive the abundance of great proposals from internationally established researchers, we may have to consider something like that. However, I think organizing a big event should provide some advantages for the host country. For example, Olympics, FIFA World Cup, etc. gives immunity for the host country to participate in the big games. ICMPC 10 is a home game for Japanese (and APSCOM members, to be more politically correct). Unlike such sporting events, however, our home team still needs to go through the proposal evaluation. It is my position as the Chair of the conference, I support students and young researchers regardless of their nationalities, and I will ask the Program Commitee Chair to evaluate their proposals on the same ground. There will be no pre-screening of proposals based on international experiences of potential participants. In preparing for the Online Submission, I will make sure that the potential participants should carefully choose the best format for their presentations based on not only the purpose but also on the confidence level of English communication skills. Your idea of "demo" presentation might be worth considering as an alternative to the standard poster format. I will discuss with other organizers. Once again, thank you for breaking the ice. I have been waiting for a comment for over six months. I hope many other will follow you to share ideas with us and with those who are interested in joining the Conference. Sincerely, Mayumi P.s. I have organized English Camp and English Coaching Session for young members of JSMPC since last fall. I do hope to surprise you next

● Narita International Airport (Tokyo Metropolitan district) Main gateway to Japan.

Closer than Narita to downtown areas of Tokyo (30-50 mins. from Tokyo station, Ueno, Shinjuku, or Shibuya). The only international flights at Haneda are chartered flights (from e.g. Seoul, Shanghai). ❍ JAL (and Skymark) flights arrive/depart at Terminal 1, while ANA flights arrive/depart at Terminal 2. So be careful about which Terminal Building you are headed for. The two buildings are about 400m apart and connected by an underground path (with moving sidewalks), as well as free shuttle buses.

❍ The monorail station is underground beneath the terminal buildings, each with their own station. The Keikyu line station is underground and spans the two terminal buildings, so exit at the front end (for Terminal 2) or the back end (for Terminal 1).

Campus is the main campus of Hokkaido University, located northwest of Sapporo Station.

● Summer Vacation Season

http://icmpc10.typepad.jp/blog/2007/09/access_maps.html (7/9) [2009/09/30 2:35:52] ICMPC10 (Sapporo, 2008): Access / Maps

Hokkaido is a popular summer vacation resort; and although late August is off-peak of the busiest periods, it is strongly advised to make reservations (especially for domestic flights) well in advance.

● Smoking Policy

http://icmpc10.typepad.jp/blog/2007/09/access_maps.html (8/9) [2009/09/30 2:35:52] ICMPC10 (Sapporo, 2008): Access / Maps

❍ Generally speaking, smoking is not allowed in most public areas (airports, stations, major stores, public buildings and institutes, etc.); except in designated smoking areas. Non- smoking facilities do tend to have such smoking areas some place or the other.

General Information Q1 Are there other useful sites about visiting Japan?

http://icmpc10.typepad.jp/blog/2007/09/frequently_aske.html (2/6) [2009/09/30 2:36:00] ICMPC10 (Sapporo, 2008): Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Trying search engines like Google and Yahoo! would also be of help.

Other equipment might require stepping-up transformers (for 200+V).

http://icmpc10.typepad.jp/blog/2007/09/frequently_aske.html (3/6) [2009/09/30 2:36:00] ICMPC10 (Sapporo, 2008): Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

† click the links to see the amount in your currency Q3 How much does a meal cost in Sapporo?

http://icmpc10.typepad.jp/blog/2007/09/frequently_aske.html (4/6) [2009/09/30 2:36:00] ICMPC10 (Sapporo, 2008): Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q4 Where can I learn about the conference venue and location? A4 Try the following links.

● Hokkaido University (main venue)

● Moerenuma Park (sub venue)

● City of Sapporo

● Prefecture of Hokkaido

● Sapporo Tourist Association
