Using a novel dataset of roll-call votes in the current EP-term, we identify critical members whose votes are necessary to form winning coalitions. We found that committee members with formal positions, EP group coordinators as well as German, French, Italian and British members are powerful actors. Nevertheless, rapporteurs are not necessarily influential. We also concluded that members with moderate ideological position but from Member States with extreme agricultural importance are the most powerful ones. Brussels, 18 December 2015 Dear High Representative, After 16 years of exile in the Netherlands, Ms. Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, president of the Unified Democratic Forces FDU-Inkingi, a coalition of Rwandan opposition parties, returned to Rwanda to run for presidential elections scheduled for August 2010. On 14th October she was arrested after weeks of police harassment, intimidation and media lynching, charged with genocide ideology, genocide denial, and conspiracy against the regime. Charges commonly used to silence any opposition in a country where freedom of expression is severely curtailed. After a flawed trial, condemned among others by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the Foundation Jean Jaurès, she was sentenced in first 8 years in prison. On appeal, the sentence was increased to 15 years. Yet, the Supreme Court had invalidated some of the evidences used to convict her in the first place. Having lost all confidence in the justice of her country led by an authoritarian regime, she filed an application with the African Court of Human Rights and Peoples based in Arusha, Tanzania. Nominated for Sakharov Prize in 2012, the fate of this mother, nicknamed by her followers as the Rwandan Aung San Suu Kyi, should challenge us. Pursuant to the resolution of our Parliament 2013/2641 (RSP) of 25 may 2013, we ask the European Commission to officially request the immediate release of Madam Ingabire. In the meantime, we urge the Commission to take action to improve her prison conditions by ensuring, among others, a free and easy access to legal counsel and her recognition as a political prisoner.

In 2013, a small group of German green and left- wing activists, professional campaign NGOs and well-established protectionist organisations set up deceptive communication campaigns against TTIP, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership between the European Union and the United States. Germany’s anti-TTIP NGOs explicitly aimed to take German-centred protests to other European countries. Their reasoning is contradictory and logically inconsistent. Their messages are targeted to serve common sense protectionist demands of generally ill-informed citizens and politicians. Thereby, anti-TTIP communication is based on metaphoric messages and far-fetched myths to effectively evoke citizens’ emotions. Together, these groups dominated over 90 percent of online media reporting on TTIP in Germany. Anti-TTIP protest groups in Germany are not only inventive; they are also resourceful. Based on generous public funding and opaque private donations, green and left-wing political parties, political foundations, clerical and environmental groups, and well-established anti-globalisation organisations maintain influential campaign networks. Protest groups’ activities are coordinated by a number of former and current green and left-wing politicians and political parties that search for anti-establishment political profiles. As Wallon blockage mentality regarding CETA, the trade and investment agreement between the European Union and Canada, demonstrates, Germany’s anti-TTIP groups’ attempts to undermine EU trade policy bear the risk of coming to fruition in other Eurpean countries.

Brussels, 22nd of September 2017 Mr. Mariano Rajoy Brey, President of the Government of Spain As elected Members of the European Parliament, we would like to express our deep concern regarding the situation in Catalonia, which has reached a critical point. The repressive actions and threats carried out by the Spanish authorities, mainly the Spanish police, against civil servants, MPS, mayors, media, companies and citizens during these last few days are not only a violation of basic fundamental rights but a wrong approach to handle a political question. We are aware that 14 high-ranking government officials have been arrested by the Guardia Civil, and 5 Ministries of the Catalan Government have been raided, de facto Catalonia lives under an undeclared état de siege that goes against the EU Treaties and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. These actions are unacceptable and we demand you to backtrack immediately. The separation of powers is the cornerstone of any democratic society and the use of judiciary and legal action to deal with a matter of a political nature is a mistake and an abuse and misuse of power. Politicians, not judges or police forces, should primarily deal with political disagreements in any European democratic country. The debates in the Catalan Parliament to call a referendum on independence that has a wide support from the Catalan population cannot lead to a court case being brought by the Spanish government against its President and bureau. Thus, these breaches of freedom of expression and freedom of assembly are not acceptable in the European Union democratic standards, so it is our duty, as Members of the European Parliament, representing European citizens, to condemn these disproportionate reactions from the Spanish authorities to the political legitimate claim of Catalan society for a self-determination referendum.

The prize is awarded to “honour exceptional individuals who combat intolerance, fanaticism and oppression.”1 Previous winners include Nelson Mandela, Reporters without Borders and Anatoli Marchenko. If you believe that Azerbaijani human rights defenders – who are now in jail following years of work on behalf of the rights of others, and most recently on a list of political prisoners in Azerbaijan (on which they are now included) – then let the MEPs who vote on this know. Nominations for the Sakharov Prize can be made by: Political groups in the European Parliament. Or At least 40 MEPs. The deadline for nominations is Thursday 18 September at 12:00 in Strasbourg. We - recently elected MEPs and MEPs of the outgoing period - consider it our obligation to accompany the negotiations in permanent contact with the negotiators of the Commission. We insist on receiving regular updates during the final phase of the negotiations, in order to provide for an informed debate in the European Parliament and the specialised committees and working groups. We consider this essential for the good functioning of the relations between our institutions. This is particularly important due to the fact that the EU - Mercosur Agreement is politically very sensitive. This has been further complicated by public statements of Brazil’s President Bolsonaro - on climate change, on the future of Amazonia, on workers’ rights, on the rights of indigenous peoples, on freedom of thought and freedom of expression and association. His announcement on turning land reserved for indigenous peoples into land used for industrial farming has provoked the largest protest gathering of indigenous population in Brasilia in the history of the country. In the favelas of Rio and other large cities, extrajudicial killings by police forces occur on a regular basis. Institutions in defence of the rights of minorities are being dismantled. Democratically constituted societies need a vibrant civil society that fights for and defends participation, which Brazil's civil society has done well since 1988.

Manifesto for #FairInternships We support the call of the Global Intern Strike for equal access to fair, quality internships for ALL young people. ● Equality: Internships need to be paid so that they are accessible to all, regardless of socio-economic background. ● Fairness: Interns must have basic employment rights such as protection from harassment and fair working conditions. ● Quality: Internships should offer meaningful learning experiences that help young people successfully transition from education to employment. We believe that all EU institutions should ban unpaid internships. ● We call all EU institutions to take the necessary steps to provide quality and well remunerated internships to ALL its interns and to stop offering unpaid internships altogether and avoid having a parallel system of less regulated internships aside from their regular internship program. ● We call the European Ombudsman to continue investigating the situation of unpaid interns in EU institutions after its recommendation on the EEAS practice of offering unpaid internships offered in EU delegations. To this end, the European Parliament should change its rules governing internships offered by MEP’s and political groups, taking into account the following demands: ● Pay trainees in in MEP offices or political groups a decent remuneration at a similar level as the Schuman trainees! The remuneration should cover living expenses in Brussels or the city where the traineeship is undertaken. The remuneration needs to be clearly included in the trainee’s contract. If provided by another institution, this needs to be documented and included in the trainee’s contract. ● Fix the standard duration of traineeships to 6 months and limit the maximum duration to 12 months.
