I also certify that this thesis has not been submitted in any educational institute or anywhere for the purpose of gaining a higher degree except Wilfrid Laurier University. i Abstract Multi Attribute Utility Theory (MAUT), Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluations (PROMETHEE) and Elimination methods of Multi-Criteria Decision analysis (MCDA) are tested to assess and compare the sustainability of different agricultural systems. Indicators and composite indicators are derived from data gathered using the agricultural sustainability categories of Productivity, Stability, Efficiency, Durability, Compatibility and Equity (PSEDCE). Agricultural systems around the world face challenges from current agricultural practices, over- exploitation of natural resources, population growth and climate change. As a result, understanding agricultural sustainability has become a global issue. Assessment is a first step in benchmarking and tracking agricultural sustainability and can support related policy and programmes. This thesis applied the PSEDCE categories to understand more about the complexities inherent to agricultural sustainability assessment. Agricultural sustainability assessment (ASA) requires a wide variety of ecological, economic and social information with various methods. In the first part of this thesis, a systematic analysis of the scientific soundness and user-friendliness of eight ASA approaches revealed that MCDA based ASA is the preferred holistic method. MCDA can take into account both qualitative and quantitative indicators of all dimensions of sustainability and analyze them to draw a comprehensive picture. As a multifaceted, complex issue, agricultural sustainability assessment is well-suited to MCDA, which is able to handle large data sets including stakeholders’ perspectives. Given that it is a relatively new analysis procedure in the study of agriculture, only a few researchers have applied this technique to measure sustainability. Considering these findings, three MCDA methods, MAUT, PROMETHEE and Elimination, were tested to measure the relative sustainability of five agricultural systems in coastal Bangladesh. To investigate the performance of MAUT, PROMETHEE, and Elimination, a total of 50 indicators from agricultural sustainability categories of PSEDCE were tested. From these 50 indicators, 15 composite indicators were developed through proportionate normalization and hybrid aggregation rules of arithmetic mean and geometric mean. The 15 composite indicators were used in MAUT and PROMETHEE analysis, and the 50 indicators were used in Elimination analysis. ii The analyses show that MAUT is able to aggregate diverse information and stakeholders’ perspectives to generate a robust score that enables a comparison of sustainability across the different agricultural systems. PROMETHEE is a non-compensatory approach that can also accommodate a variety of information and provide thresholds for ranking relative agricultural sustainability for each of the five agricultural systems. Elimination ranks the sustainability of agricultural systems through a set of straightforward decision rules expressed in the form of “if … then …” conditions. Elimination appears to be quick and less complex, whereas MAUT and PROMETHEE are regarded as fairly complicated and require software to find potential solutions. Overall, the study shows that MAUT, PROMETHEE and Elimination can handle multidimensional data and can be applied for relative assessment of sustainability of agricultural systems. However, selection of the appropriate criteria, stakeholders’ perspectives and the purpose of the assessment are very important and must be considered carefully for inclusion in MCDA methods for agricultural sustainability assessment. The results of the case studies also demonstrate that these approaches have the potential to become a useful framework for agricultural sustainability assessment and related policy development and decision-making. iii Acknowledgements I am eternally grateful to my supervisor, Dr. Alison Blay-Palmer, Associate Professor, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, Wilfrid Laurier University. Almost all the workplaces were shut about for 66 days from 26 March 2020. As a result, the number of workplace deaths is little bit low than previous year 2019, but not that much low as it is supposed to be. Every year Safety and Rights Society (SRS) is monitoring newspaper for collecting and preserving information on workplace accidents and the number of victims of those accidents and publish a report after conducting the yearly survey – this year report is the tenth in the series. SRS depends not only the newspapers as the source for information but it also accumulated some information from online media and through personal contact with workers representative organizations. This year 26 newspapers (15 national and 11 regional) were monitored and the present report includes information on workplace deaths (as well as injuries that took place in the same incident that resulted in the deaths) throughout 2020.

This study investigated the existing useful plant resources, its utilization and conservation importance of home gardens in Kalaroa Upazila of Satkhira District, Bangladesh. All useful plants were censused, totalling 270 species including four threatened from 50 randomly selected home gardens totalling 9.29 ha area.

Background: Samadhan is a Non-government, Non-political, Non-religious multidimensional development service oriented local level voluntary organization. It is working in south-west region of Bangladesh from October 14, 1987 for poverty alleviation and sustainable socio-economic development for the poor and ultra poor inhabitants of the Kopotakkha, Betraboti, Shonai, Ichamoti, Harihar, Sreenadi and Mukteswari River basin areas under Jessore and Satkhira District. The said areas are the most poverty-stricken & disaster prone. Every year the Flood, waterlogged, Drought, Arsenic contamination in water and some other disaster are occurred here several times. The peoples are loosing wealth, disrupting their livelihood pattern becoming livelihood risk and vulnerable situation. At least 80% families are directly or indirectly depend on traditional agriculture systems. Agro based modern technologies are very difficulties to apply in this areas. The Agriculture activities dose not enhances to change their livelihoods of the 60% families. Locally they don’t have sufficient job opportunities i.e. they are remain un-employed for more than 09 months of the year. More than 50% people have to go to out for searching alternative jobs; especially in the district and city town for off firming job i.e. they are changing their profession for survivability. Some of the poor families undertake fishing, collection and selling of fire woods and cow dong, vending of vegetables and spices etc as alternative source to earn money for their survivability. The women headed day labor families can’t arrange suitable job. The numbers of extremely poor families are more than 25%, they are never considered to involve with any development activities.

    LAND USE AND LAND COVER DYNAMICS IN THE GANGES DELTA REGION, BANGLADESH by Md Saifuzzaman A thesis submitted to the School of Environmental Studies In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Environmental Studies Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (December 2015) Copyright ©Md Saifuzzaman, 2015 Abstract The Ganges Delta is a dynamic landscape that has experienced substantial transformation over the last half century and is particularly susceptible to future change as a result of rising sea levels. The aim of this project was to analyze recent trends in land cover in southwest Bangladesh, and to better understand the natural and anthropogenic factors responsible for this transformation. Three study areas spanning a salinity gradient across the region were selected for analysis. Research was conducted by linking multi-temporal remote sensing data (Landsat MSS, TM, and OLI; 1973-2014) and validating these data with ground-based survey information to understand historical land use and vegetation changes. Results indicate that throughout the basin, ecosystems ranging from freshwater to saline (all of which are found in the low-lying topographical zones of Bangladesh) have experienced a wide range of anthropogenic influences and geophysical driving forces. Cultivable areas have been decreasing substantially in the freshwater floodplain due to expansion of waterlogged and settlement areas. It was frequently observed that a decrease of agricultural land and natural freshwater bodies was accompanied by an increase in shrimp farms in the southernmost brackish and saline zone; this process has been moving northward over the past several decades. These interferences have physically altered the ecosystems of the basin and the land therein.
