Far-right Reframings of Jewishness • A shift from antisemitism to philosemitism has originated from a fundamental re‑imagining of Jewishness, where Jews and Judaism are understood through far‑right framings in order to legitimise existing ideologies. For example, by seeing Jews as European, pro‑Israel and anti‑Muslim, the far‑right allows itself to align philosemitism to its own interests. • In this way, deliberately positive sentiments of Jews based on stereotypes are rooted in the same processes as antisemitism, whereby the two phenomena are two sides of the same coin. • Strategies of ‘Collective Action Framing’ are used to impose a Christian‑derived framing of Jewishness onto Jewish people • ‘Frame Extension’, in the case of the radical right’s understanding of Israel as a European frontier against the Arab world, is used to expand far‑right ideology beyond its primary interests in order to appeal to a wider audience.

  • Antisemitism in a New Era
Rabbi Laurie Zimmerman Congregation Shaarei Shamayim Yom Kippur Morning September 30, 2017 Antisemitism in a New Era What a headline…“Steve Bannon Loves Israel and the Jews – Really.” In this recent op-ed, published by the Forward, Morton Klein, President of the Zionist Organization of America, explains why his organization is featuring Bannon at their upcoming Superstar Gala Dinner this November. Klein complains that far left-wing groups and the media are delegitimizing the best friends of Israel and the Jewish people by calling them “extremists” and “anti-Semites.” So, he sets the record straight: Bannon has been misinterpreted. When Bannon said that “Breitbart is the platform of the alt-right” he meant that alt-right denotes the idea of “anti-establishment” and “anti-mainstream.” Bannon, he argues, “despises bigots, and has never allowed bigots, racists or neo-Nazis to publish in Breitbart.” Heck, Breitbart opened a news bureau in Jerusalem. And three of their top writers are yarmulke-wearing Orthodox Jews. (The Forward, September 7, 2017) What a shonda. For as long as I can remember, it was the right-wing of the Jewish community that found antisemitism lurking under every rock. It was only three years ago that the Anti-Defamation League under the leadership of conservative-leaning Abraham Foxman published the hopelessly flawed survey on global antisemitism, claiming that one quarter of the world is antisemitic. Even Jay Michaelson, an ordained Conservative rabbi and lifelong Jewish educator, gets labeled an anti-Semite after he muddles his way through the survey. (“I Am 1 Billionth ‘Anti-Semite’” The Forward, May 20, 2014) But now it seems that the left and the mainstream of the Jewish community are alarmed by the spike in antisemitism following last year’s election of Donald Trump, while the right is telling us to stop over-reacting – or as Foxman said last winter following the dozens of bomb threats to Jewish community centers and vandalism in Jewish cemeteries: “Cool it, cool it” and lay off the president.

Robert Wexler, President News Excerpts May 12, 2021 Reuters 35 Killed in Gaza, 5 in Israel, as Violence Escalates Hostilities between Israel and Hamas escalated with 35 Palestinians killed in Gaza and five in Israel. Israel carried out hundreds of air strikes in Gaza as the Islamist group fired multiple rocket barrages at Tel Aviv and Beersheba. Israel said it attacked Hamas targets, including intelligence centers and rocket launch sites. It was the heaviest offensive between Israel and Hamas since a 2014 war in Gaza and prompted international concern that the situation could spiral out of control. The violence followed weeks of tension in Jerusalem during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, with clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian protesters in and around Al-Aqsa Mosque, on the compound revered by Jews as Temple Mount and by Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary. These escalated in recent days ahead of a (now postponed) court hearing in a case that could end with Palestinian families evicted from East Jerusalem homes claimed by Jewish settlers.

  • Israel 2019 Human Rights Report
ISRAEL 2019 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Israel is a multiparty parliamentary democracy. Although it has no constitution, parliament, the unicameral 120-member Knesset, has enacted a series of “Basic Laws” that enumerate fundamental rights. Certain fundamental laws, orders, and regulations legally depend on the existence of a “state of emergency,” which has been in effect since 1948. Under the Basic Laws, the Knesset has the power to dissolve the government and mandate elections. Following the nationwide Knesset elections in April and September, which were generally considered free and fair, Israeli political parties failed to form a coalition government. Therefore, the Knesset voted on December 11 to dissolve itself and set March 2, 2020, as the date for a third general election within a year. Under the authority of the prime minister, the Israeli Security Agency (ISA) combats terrorism and espionage in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. The national police, including the border police and the immigration police, are under the authority of the Ministry of Public Security. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) is responsible for external security but also has some domestic security responsibilities and reports to the Ministry of Defense. ISA forces operating in the West Bank and East Jerusalem fall under the IDF for operations and operational debriefing. Civilian authorities maintained effective control over the security services. Significant human rights issues included: reports of unlawful or arbitrary killings, including targeted killings of Israeli civilians and soldiers; arbitrary detention; restrictions on non-Israelis residing in Jerusalem including arbitrary or unlawful interference with privacy, family, and home; and significant restrictions on freedom of movement.

  • How Netanyahu's Son Became the Poster Boy For
How Netanyahu’s Son Became the Poster Boy for White Supremacists By Jonathan Cook Region: Middle East & North Africa Global Research, September 19, 2017 Theme: Poverty & Social Inequality The eldest son of Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has found himself an unlikely poster boy for David Duke, a former Ku Klux Klan leader, and the neo-Nazi website Daily Stormer. Last week these cheerleaders for Jew hatred described 27-year-old Yair Netanyahu as “awesome” and “a total bro” for posting a grossly anti-semitic image on social media. It depicts an Illuminati-like figure and a reptilian creature controlling the world through money and dark arts. Alongside them are a cabal of conspirators, their faces altered to show Netanyahu’s main opponents. They include George Soros, a Holocaust survivor who has invested billions in pro-democracy movements, andEhud Barak, a former Israeli prime minister turned government critic. This is not Yair’s first troubling outburst. Last month he emulatedPresident US Donald Trump in decrying demonstrators who opposed a rally by white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia, that left a woman dead. These might be dismissed as the immature rantings of a wayward son, had Yair not been groomed by his father as Israel’s “crown prince”. Netanyahu Jnr was supposedly behind an online media strategy that steered Netanyahu to electoral victory in 2015. He can be seen at his father’s side at meetings with world leaders. The Israeli media were shocked not only by the post but Netanyahu’s determined refusal to criticise his son. An editorial in the Haaretz daily concluded that the prime minister’s silence signaled his “consent to the ongoing demonization of anyone who doesn’t get in line with the Israeli right”.
