The study begins by examining the formation of social dancing into a specific brand of commercial entertainment in association with the popularity of Vernon and Irene Castle as social dancing entertainers around 1914. The Castles branded social dancing as a modern form of leisure through their exhibitions of social dancing in public, through products that were marketed with their name, in a book of illustrations for “Modern Dancing” (1914), and through Whirl of Life (1915), a film they produced about the origination of their romance and popularity as dancing entertainers. -

“Skid Row”: Filipinos, Race and the Social Construction of Space in San Diego By Rudy P. Guevarra, Jr.*1 Like other racial and ethnic minority groups in early twentieth century San Diego, Filipinos found their use of space profoundly circumscribed. Racial segregation restricted where Filipinos could live, work and enjoy their leisure time. Like other Asian immigrant groups before them, Filipinos were prohibited from owning land or property in California due to existing alien land laws. In addition, the city’s racial structure also ensured that Filipinos were denied access to rental housing in various parts of San Diego, which limited their choices. As a result of these restrictions, Filipinos remained in several enclaves: the South Bay and Southeastern sections of San Diego, small pockets in Coronado and La Jolla (known as the “servants quarters”) and in downtown San Diego’s Chinatown, or as many called it, “skid row.” 1 This area, which was described as the “tenderloin” of San Diego, was as one 1946 report noted, “the location of most of the interracial Stingaree, 3rd Avenue and J Street, c. 1924. © SDHS #14116. multiple family dwellings in San Diego” where “rooming houses, cheap hotels and tenements” were located.2 In this article, I argue that this restricted area – encompassing the blocks of Fourth through Sixth Avenues, Island, Market, and J Streets –served as the spatial locus for the formation of a distinct Filipino community in San Diego. “White Trash” Meets the ”Lit t Ie Brown Monkeys“: The Taxi Dance Hall as a Site of Interracial and Gender Alliances between White Working Class Women and Filipino Immigrant Men in the 1920s and 30s’ Rhacel Salazar Parreiias During the 1920s and 30s, taxi dance halls flourished as sites of commercial amusement in Filipino labor migrant communities. From the rural areas of Fresno and Watsonville to the urban cit- ies of Chicago, Seattle, and Los Angeles, Filipino labor migrants- numbering approximately 40,000 in the mainland patronized taxi dance halls to enjoy the company of mostly white working class female hostesses? In taxi dance halls, ”hostesses (were) obliged to dance with any man who request(ed) it, and for as long a time as he (chose) to pay for their cornpan~.”~Costing the Filipino male patrons ”ten cents a dance,” the taxi-dance hall served as the primary institution which allowed Filipino men to interact socially with women.4 Taxi dance halls boomed in a time of racial segregation and stringent anti-miscegenation in the United States while eugenicists advocated for the segrega- tion and complete separation of ”lesser” races from mainstream society. Believed to be ”unassimilable” and ”brown monkeys,” Filipinos had been excluded from owning property and patron- izing “white-owned” businesses and establishments, and, in some cases, even ch~rches.~Anti-miscegenation laws were also enacted as the number of Filipinos in the United States increased to a more visible portion of the population.6 Not surprisingly, taxi- dance halls were objects of public scrutiny and scorn. Whereas existing research discusses the rhetorical reframing of exchange, I highlight structures that obfuscate whether an exchange is occurring and thereby mitigate exchange taboos. I identify three such exchange structures: bundling, brokerage, and gift exchange. Bundling uses cross- subsidization across multiple innocuous exchanges to synthesize a taboo exchange. Brokerage finds a third party to accept responsibility for exchange. Gift exchange delays reciprocity and reframes exchanges as expressions of friendship. All three strategies have alternative meanings and so provide plausible deniability to taboo commensuration. The article concludes by arguing that these sorts of exchange structures represent a synthesis of “nothing but” reductionism and “hostile worlds” moralism, rather than an alternative to them as Viviana Zelizer suggests. Keywords relational work, economic sociology, morality The core premise of economics is that human beings exchange to achieve gains from trade. However, nearly all cultures consider some potential positive-sum trades to be morally inap- propriate. For instance, in the contemporary United States, it is generally considered immoral to pay money for sex acts or human organs. Often such taboos are simply honored and we refrain from engaging in disreputable exchange. In other cases, people use explicit moral suasion to argue that the exchanges should be understood as reputable. -

Despite this, the study of this industry here in the UK has been neglected, with the body of research confined to the U.S and Canada. In spite of gaining some academic attention abroad, the literature, which has emerged from the research, suggests a narrow field of interest, concerned with exploitation, risk and dancer motivation. Further to this, there has also been a tendency to address dancer-customer interaction; the relationship between dancers has been ignored. Finally, the general approach of researchers has been to stress the negative implications of a lap-dancing career on the dancers; reflected in the deviant and implicit anti-sex work/exploitation frameworks which have dominated academic thinking in this field of study. Through the use of ethnographic methods the research on which this thesis is based redresses these issues. The data for this research was generated in a UK lap-dancing club using extensive participant observation, estimated at over 2000 hours, along with in-depth interviews to supplement the core findings. The main focus of study was on the relationships between dancers and the culture with which they mutually engage. -

There are boundless opportunities in America. Jobs are plentiful and you can become rich or you can make the money, return, and live in comfort,” said the gentleman in the white suit, white shoes, and white hat, who looked like a young Colonel Sanders. His listener was one of the few hundred bright students, pensionados, who were selected by President Theodore Roosevelt’s territorial government of the Philippines in 1903 to be educated in the United States. Their mission was to return to the Philippines as teachers and provide American leadership. After his ten-year tour of education, earning a Ph.D., the pensionado returned to Luna La Union. After the Philippines became a territory in 1903, the United States inculcated many Filipinos with American ideals. Anglo teachers would impart lessons in English so that the locals would become Americanized. Pensionados were supposed to assimilate and to become familiar with the patterns of American culture (Noble). The means to get to the U.S. for most of the youth (mostly lads) was to join the U.S. Army or Navy, which, they were assured, would also entitle them to citizenship in the United States. Some middle- and upper-class families wanted their children to be educated in the United States, so they paid for their transportation and college. Very few girls came to the United States at that time. The ratio in 1920 to 1924 of male to female was 14 to 1 in the United States. -
