Volume 46 • Issue 6 IMS Bulletin September 2017 JSM 2017 in Baltimore The 2017 Joint Statistical Meetings in Baltimore, Maryland, which included the CONTENTS IMS Annual Meeting, took place from July 29 to August 3. There were over 6,000 1 JSM round-up participants from 52 countries, and more than 600 sessions. Among the IMS program highlights were the three Wald Lectures given by Emmanuel Candès, and the Blackwell 2–3 Members’ News: ASA Fellows; ICM speakers; David Allison; Lecture by Martin Wainwright—Xiao-Li Meng writes about how inspirational these Mike Cohen; David Cox lectures (among others) were, on page 10. There were also five Medallion lectures, from Edoardo Airoldi, Emery Brown, Subhashis Ghoshal, Mark Girolami and Judith 4 COPSS Awards winners and nominations Rousseau. This recording was made in March 1977 by Evar Nering at his apartment in Scottsdale, Arizona. Tucker: I have recently received the tapes that Speed made and find that these tapes carried my history up to approximately 1938. So the plan is to continue the history. In the late '30s I was working in combinatorial topology with not a great deal of results to show. I guess I was really more interested in my teaching. I had an opportunity to teach an undergraduate course in topology, combinatorial topology that is, classification of 2-dimensional surfaces and that sort of thing. -

Obituary notices Ronald Drayton Brown Died 31 October 2008, elected to Fellowship 1965 Ronald Drayton (Ron) Brown was born in Melbourne on 14 October 1927. He grew up as an only child in modest suburban circumstances in Prahran and did not come from a scientific or academic background. His father had achieved some distinction in amateur athletics. His secondary education was at Wesley College, to which he had won a scholarship. He excelled in mathematics and physics and was an interested reader of astronomy books. He was dux of the school in his final year and was awarded an exhibition in physics in the Victorian matriculation examinations. In his first undergraduate year at the University of Melbourne, he majored in physics and chemistry. In second year he dropped Ron Brown physics, despite scoring better results than in chemistry. While completing a chemistry major he also informally attended the lectures in third year physics and mathematics, without completing the examinations, ending up with an effective triple major for his BSc in 1946. In the days before it was possible to do a PhD anywhere in Australia, Ron began his research career as an MSc student in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Melbourne with Dr Francis Lahey as supervisor. His thesis topic was alkaloid products from Australian plants, particularly Acronychia baueri. He had chosen this project because it would involve some organic chemistry and some spectroscopy. He was attracted by the relationships between the structure of organic compounds and their spectra, and the use of these ideas in deducing the structure of newly isolated compounds. -

Statistics provides a special kind of understanding that enables well-informed deci- sions. As citizens and consumers we are faced with an array of choices. Statistics can help us to choose well. Our statistical brains need to be nurtured: we can all learn and practise some simple rules of statistical thinking. To understand how statistics can play a bigger part in our lives today we can draw inspiration from the founders of the Royal Statistical Society. Although in today’s world the information landscape is confused, there is an opportunity for statistics that is there to be seized.This calls for us to celebrate the discipline of statistics, to show confidence in our profession, to use statistics in the public interest and to champion statistical education. The Royal Statistical Society has a vital role to play. Introduction Dictionaries trace the source of the word statistics from the Latin ‘status’, the state, to the Italian ‘statista’, one skilled in statecraft, and on to the German ‘Statistik’, the science dealing with data about the condition of a state or community. The Oxford English Dictionary brings ‘statistics’ into English in 1787. Florence Nightingale held that ‘the thoughts and purpose of the Deity are only to be discovered by the statistical study of natural phenomena:::the application of the results of such study [is] the religious duty of man’ (Pearson, 1924). -

Carbon fibre is a low weight product with high rigidity, tensile strength and chemical resistance that is used in aerospace, civil engineering, cars, health and the military. Her projects included control of oriental peach moths and blowflies, work on plant diseases and noxious weeds, and studies of the effects of supplements on sheep. “Betty Allan’s statistical work pushed CSIR’s agricultural science to new heights – training scientists, designing reliable experiments and extracting important information,” said Dr Murray Cameron, chief of CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences. “After she retired in 1940 following her marriage, CSIRO formally established a Biometrics Section, forerunner to the present-day CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences.” Dinner Speakers Terry Speed (left) and John Field (right) with Murray Cameron (centre), Chief of CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences At a dinner in Canberra on 27 September 2005, CSIRO paid tribute to the seventy fifth anniversary of the appointment of its first statistician, Frances Elizabeth “Betty” Allan. The dinner featured talks by John Field of BiometricsSA on the life of Betty Allan, and Terry Speed of WEHI and UC Berkeley on the expansive topic “Mathematics, Statistics, Biology: Past, Present and Future”. Born in 1905, Betty Allan studied pure and mixed mathematics at Melbourne University, completing both bachelors and masters degrees and winning scholarships and honours throughout. In 1928 she took up a CSIR studentship for “the study of statistical methods applied to agriculture”, studying at Newnham College, Cambridge and then working at Rothamsted Experimental Station with RA Fisher. Fisher described her as Betty Allen having “a rare gift for first-class mathematics”. -

Heyde Australian National University and Columbia University Introduction Statistics in the early colonial period in Australia (ie the first half of the nineteenth century) was almost entirely related to official data collection. But as universities were founded a broader range of scientific uses slowly opened up. Prior to Federation (1901), four universities had been estab- lished in the colonies. These were the universities of Sydney, established in 1850, Melbourne in 1853, Adelaide in 1874 and Tasmania in 1890. With Fed- eration the states replaced colonies and the four existing universities were soon joined by ones in the remaining state capitals, namely Queensland in 1909 and Western Australia in 1911. This article will principally focus on the developments which took place through these institutions. It was not till after the second world war that Australia had a burst of creation of more universities and there followed the Australian National University (1946), University of New South Wales (1949), University of New England (1954), Monash University (1958), Macquarie University (1964), University of New- castle (1965), Flinders University (1966), James Cook University (1970).... Teaching in Mathematics began at all the original universities soon after their inception. Statistics, however, came much later. As in the UK and USA it was the methodological developments of the 1920s and the immedi- ate success of their application, for example in agriculture, which spurred interest in the discipline. Statistics teaching had its beginnings in each of the Mathematics Departments, typically near the end of the 1920s or begin- ning of the 1930s, but also, and in some cases largely contemporaneously, in the Faculties of Economics and Agriculture. -
