Forsyth had little trouble finding men. The pay was to be $75 per month for men who furnished their own horse and $50 per month for those who did not. 30 men signed up at Fort Harker on August 24. Sometimes referred to as the “Solomon Avengers,” the scouts were made up of farmers, teamsters, and labors; some had a wealth of experience, some were “green” and looking for adventure, some were seeking vengeance and others were just looking for employment.
