Williams Collection Processed by: R. Lee Steiner in March 2008. Additions added, collection reorganized, and finding aid written according to DACS standards by John Armstrong, 2015. Arrangement: The collection is arranged into two series. Series I: Photographs, 1910-1995 Series II: General Aircraft Information, 1946-2011 Biographical Note: Drew Taylor served in the United States Air Force for a number of years before retiring and becoming a member of the Huffman Prairie Aviation Historical Society in Dayton, Ohio. His interest in military aircraft became the basis for his desire to collect what he could on a wide variety of aircraft employed by the military while he was serving in the Air Force. When he was recalled to active duty in 2001, he decided to donate his materials to Wright State University in hopes that his fellow aircraft enthusiasts might find the collection useful. Scope and Content: The Drew Taylor Aircraft Collection documents a variety of aircraft, primarily from the mid-20th century, with both photographs and technical information. Through this collection, researchers may gain insight into not only the aircraft were put into production, but also those that remained in the experimental stages of development. The collection is divided into two series. Series I, Photographs, is the largest series and contains photographs of aircraft and helicopters/ vertical take-off aircraft. The series is grouped according to aircraft photographs, helicopters and vertical take-off aircraft, and general aircraft photographs with largest grouping being aircraft. Within each grouping, the photographs are arranged in alphabetical order according to manufacturer. At the end of this series is a photograph album containing photographs taken by Mr. Taylor at various locations or events, including photographs taken at the Air Force “Bone Yard” at Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ. Series II, General Aircraft Information, contains general information about aircraft and helicopters. The first grouping contains information about aircraft and the second groups contains information on helicopters. Mostly the files contain drawings and a few articles or technical information brochures on a specific aircraft or helicopter. The last grouping contains publication and manuals. Of note is a flight manual for the C-47. Other publications include a 1974 Aerospace Information Handbook on Air Force vehicles, and a 1970 booklet giving the background information on Air Force Aces. • The Reims Air Races
Reims Air races and the Gordon Bennett Trophy Bleriot's cross-Channel flight excited Europe as nothing else had. The City of Reims and the French vintners of the Champagne region decided to sponsor a week of aviation exhibition and competition, putting up large purses in prize money, the most prestigious being the International Aviation Cup, known as the Gordon Bennett Trophy, after its sponsor, James Gordon Bennett, the flamboyant American publisher of the New York Herald and the Paris Herald. The meet attracted the cream of European society, from royalty and generals to ambassadors and the merely wealthy, to the Betheny Plain outside Reims from August 22 to 29, 1909. While there were to be many other such meets before and after World War 1, none would match Reims for grandeur and elegance or for sheer excitement. The major European manufacturers, all French, entered various events. There were 'planes by Bleriot, Voisin, Antoinette, and Farman, and even several French-built Wrights. The Wrights themselves had passed on an invitation to race at Reims, which was awkward since the Gordon Bennett Trophy was crowned with a large replica of a Wright Flyer. The Aero Club of America, which had sponsored the Scientific American trophy won by Curtiss a year earlier, turned to Curtiss. Curtiss' June Bug was not as well developed a plane as the Wright machines (and possibly the Wrights were hoping to drive this point home if Curtiss failed at Reims) and while it was more maneuverable than the European planes, it was not nearly as fast. 1909 Voisin 1 Curtiss worked feverishly to produce a more powerful engine and stripped down his airplane to give it greater speed.

  • Celebrating the Centennial of Naval Aviation in 1/72 Scale
Celebrating the Centennial of Naval Aviation in 1/72 Scale 2010 USN/USMC/USCG 1/72 Aircraft Kit Survey J. Michael McMurtrey IPMS-USA 1746 Carrollton, TX [email protected] As 2011 marks the centennial of U.S. naval aviation, aircraft modelers might be interested in this list of US naval aircraft — including those of the Marines and Coast Guard, as well as captured enemy aircraft tested by the US Navy — which are available as 1/72 scale kits. Why 1/72? There are far more kits of naval aircraft available in this scale than any other. Plus, it’s my favorite, in spite of advancing age and weakening eyes. This is an updated version of an article I prepared for the 75th Anniversary of US naval aviation and which was published in a 1986 issue of the old IPMS-USA Update. It’s amazing to compare the two and realize what developments have occurred, both in naval aeronautical technology and the scale modeling hobby, but especially the latter. My 1986 list included 168 specific aircraft types available in kit form from thirty- three manufacturers — some injected, some vacuum-formed — and only three conversion kits and no resin kits. Many of these names (Classic Plane, Contrails, Eagle’s Talon, Esci, Ertl, Formaplane, Frog, Griffin, Hawk, Matchbox, Monogram, Rareplane, Veeday, Victor 66) are no longer with us or have been absorbed by others. This update lists 345 aircraft types (including the original 168) from 192 different companies (including the original 33), many of which, especially the producers of resin kits, were not in existence in 1986, and some of which were unknown to me at the time.

In 2016, we took on various new lines like Takom, MiniArt, Yahu, and Abteilung 502 to name a few. We are happy to announce this month that Bronco (found on pages 26-27) is now part of our offerings as well as an expanded selection from Minicraft (pg 7). We plan to have at least one new line every month in 2017. Our biggest announcement yet is the launch of our first major kit that will be available in the next coming weeks, the HAUNEBU II German flying saucer! The release of the Haunebu kit will be an exciting event that will reveal a darker saga in the history of spacecraft with all the elements of WW2... occultism, inter- planetary technology, secrecy and mystique combined in one. No matter if you are an aircraft, armor or ship modeler, this piece will spark your imagination and curiosity! Check out SquadronModels.com to learn more about how you can be among the first to get this amazing kit.

Number 7 SMITHSONIAN ANNALS OF FLIGHT SMITHSONIAN AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM & SERIAL PUBLICATIONS OF THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION The emphasis upon publications as a means of diffusing knowledge was expressed by the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. In his formal plan for the Insti tution, Joseph Henry articulated a program that included the following statement: "It is proposed to publish a series of reports, giving an account of the new discoveries in science, and of the changes made from year to year in all branches of knowledge." This keynote of basic research has been adhered to over the years in the issuance of thousands of titles in serial publications under the Smithsonian imprint, com mencing with Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge in 1848 and continuing with the following active series: Smithsonian Annals of Flight Smithsonian Contributions to Anthropology Smithsonian Contributions to Astrophysics Smithsonian Contributions to Botany Smithsonian Contributions to the Earth Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to Paleobiology Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology Smithsonian Studies in History and Technology In these series, the Institution publishes original articles and monographs dealing with the research and collections of its several museums and offices and of professional colleagues at other institutions of learning. These papers report newly acquired facts, synoptic interpretations of data, or original theory in specialized fields. These pub lications are distributed by mailing lists to libraries, laboratories, and other interested institutions and specialists throughout the world. Individual copies may be obtained from the Smithsonian Institution Press as long as stocks are available. S.
