  • The Life & Rhymes of Jay-Z, an Historical Biography
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 Omékongo Dibinga, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Barbara Finkelstein, Professor Emerita, University of Maryland College of Education. Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility. This dissertation seeks to shed light on the life and development of Jay-Z during a time of great challenge and change in America and beyond. • Abstract One Love: Collective Consciousness in Rap and Poetry
Abstract One Love: Collective Consciousness in Rap and Poetry of the Hip-Hop Generation by Austin Harold Hart April, 2012 Thesis Director: John Hoppenthaler Major Department: English (Literature and Poetry) This study aims to offer an understanding of hip-hop culture through which three concepts are elucidated: (1) the existence and dimensions of a collective consciousness within rap and poetry of the hip-hop generation (Allison Joseph, A. Van Jordan, Terrance Hayes, Major Jackson, Taylor Mali, and Kevin Coval); (2) a poetics of rap—to parallel the influence seen/suggested among the selected poets; and (3) an analysis of the manner(s) in which the poetry of these more serious, academic artists reflects an influence of hip-hop culture. My thesis suggests that these poets are indeed influenced by the culture in which they grew up, and in their verse, this influence can be seen through linguistic playfulness, sonic density, layered meaning and usage through form and content, and the connection to a larger cultural, collective consciousness fed by specific social bodies. Poetic analysis, as well as studies of vernacular and oral traditions, has allowed me to explore these concepts and theories from a wider spectrum, and with regard to the work of the poets, an original perspective. Providing a deeper understanding of artists, their identities, places, and dreams within their work, this study begins to offer some insight into notions of the ways in which individuals might participate in cultural conservation. “MY LOGO IS BRANDED ON YOUR SKIN”: THE WU-TANG CLAN, AUTHENTICITY, BLACK MASCULINITY, AND THE RAP MUSIC INDUSTRY By Ryan Alexander Huey A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of History – Master of Arts 2014 ABSTRACT “MY LOGO IS BRANDED ON YOUR SKIN”: THE WU-TANG CLAN, AUTHENTICITY, BLACK MASCULINITY, AND THE RAP MUSIC INDUSTRY By Ryan Alexander Huey The rap group, the Wu-Tang Clan came out of a turbulent period of time in both the rap music industry and American society in the early 1990s. Lawsuits over sampling in rap music forced producers to rethink the ways they made music while crack cocaine and the War on Drugs wreaked havoc in urban communities across the nation, as it did in the Clan’s home borough of Staten Island, New York. Before the formation of the group, Gary “GZA” Grice, had managed to land a recording contract as a solo artist, but his marketing was mismanaged and his career stagnated. He returned in 1992 as one of the nine member collective, who billed themselves as kung fu movie buffs melding low-fi, eerie productions with realistic raps about ghetto life. Drawing from the vibrant underground rap scene of New York City in the 1970s and 1980s, Brooklyn’s rich African American chess tradition, the teachings of the Five Percenters, and the cult following for Hong Kong action cinema, the Clan became a huge hit across the country. Each member fashioned a unique masculine identity for himself, bolstering their hardcore underground image while pushing the boundaries of acceptable expressions of manhood in rap music.

ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: THE REALEST NIGGA: CONSTRUCTIONS OF BLACK MASCULINITY WITHIN RAP MUSIC Jason Nichols, Master of Arts, 2006 Thesis directed by: Professor Nancy Struna American Studies This thesis attempts to complicate and raise questions about Black masculinity and hip hop. It contains information gathered for ethnographic interviews conducted with rap artists. In these interviews, one can see that issues of performance of gender and gender authenticity are central. This thesis addresses how interview subjects negotiate the internal differences between their rap persona and their everyday identity. As both a teacher, student and a rap artist, these are questions I am attempting to reconcile for myself; thus, I am not absent from the research. This thesis concludes that artists are reluctant to call their own rap persona a performance, for fear that it would be acknowledging that it was somehow an ‘act’ or not ‘real’. My informants describe their rap identity with words like “aggressive” and their everyday persona as “patient”. When asked about what characterizes a ‘real’ man, they nearly always use the same words they used in describing their everyday persona. The methodology for this thesis includes primary and secondary sources as well as interviews. • We Love America, and We Hate Trump: a Cultural Studies Analysis of Eminem in Trump's America by Samantha Wesch
We Love America, and We Hate Trump: A Cultural Studies Analysis of Eminem in Trump’s America By Samantha Wesch A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Gender and Social Justice Studies Department of Women’s and Gender Studies University of Alberta © Samantha Wesch, 2020 Abstract In early October 2017, Marshall Mathers, better know by his stage name Eminem, received enormous attention for his freestyle rap music video The Storm, which premiered at the BET Music Awards. The Storm, both lyrically and visually, is an attack on current US President Donald Trump, and functions as Eminem’s public call-out for Trump’s racism, xenophobia and general ‘un-American-ness.’ Themes of race, class, masculinity, nostalgia and nationalism are conveyed through an entirely young and black male chorus, vintage cars and 90s hip hop fashion. During the rap, Mathers explicitly marks himself a supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement and ally (even saviour) of Black American men, undermines the President’s authority through attacks on his masculinity, expresses his support for the American military, industry and working-class, and presents himself as both an artistic and political authority on these issues. Most significantly, he diametrically opposes himself and Trump, framing himself as a self-made, politically-aware, post-race member of the working class against Trump as a silver-spoon racist with no ‘real’ experiences of hardship required for the development of a true ‘American man.’ The Storm utilizes concepts of race, class, masculinity and Americanness to portray particular ideas to its audience about the current political climate in America.
